Stephen Harrod Buhner is an Earth poet and the award-winning author of ten books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine. He comes from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, has been his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911.

Stephen's work has appeared or been profiled in publications throughout North America and Europe including Common Boundary, Apotheosis, Shaman's Drum, The New York Times, CNN, and Good Morning America. Stephen lectures yearly throughout the United States on herbal medicine, the sacredness of plants, the intelligence of Nature, and the states of mind necessary for successful habitation of Earth.

Stephen has served as president of the Colorado Association for Healing Practitioners and as a lobbyist on herbal and holistic medicines and education in the Colorado legislature. He lives in New Mexico.

It seems to be a requirement that herbalists have good senses of humor. This author is not one of the few exceptions and as such this herbal is a pleasant read. The author seems to clearly know his herbs.
He cites specific ingredients and the mechanisms by which they work. He also includes scientific studies backing the herbs. Lastly, he both links herbs to specific ailments (candida in my case) and provides lengthy explanations on how herbal antibiotic treatments in general and specific work. For example, I learned why most scientific studies show Echinacea ineffective (they used the wrong species) and that licorice is a synergist that brings out the best of other herbs.

I found this book to be better than his other book Herbal Antivirals: Natural Remedies for Emerging & Resistant Viral Infections merely because Herbal Antivirals covers viruses only. I imagine I will buy Herbal Antivirals if I ever come down with a nasty virus but probably not until then as its recommendations are specific to certain viruses (e.g. Lymes) and don't seem useful now.

read enough for now, and will continue to read and refer to.

it's taken me a while to take to Stephen Buhner as an author, but I'm pleased to have settled into his approach/style and be able to enjoy the content as intended.
this volume, and it's companion 'Herbal Antivirals', have been the books of his that have made the 'make or break' moment for me.

both books are a good mix of overview, system approaches, specific infection approaches, and herb/plant profiles.

this review and my review of his 'Herbal Antivirals' are mirrors of each other/the same, tho the books have distinct content and direction.

Having browsed through another book from Stephen Harod Buhner, I decided that I liked his style enough to take a plunge into herbalism with his Herbal Antibiotics.

The premise of Herbal Antibiotics is simple - fearing antibiotic resistant bacteria the author tries to come up with herbal alternatives of treating bacterial diseases.

The book explains how antibiotic resistance is neigh unavoidable and how the presence of antibiotics in hospitals; farms; and waters and the ever increasing concentration of people all contribute to make the antibiotic apocalypse more than likely.

The theory put forward by the author, and backed by research that he quotes, is that herbal treatments, unlike isolated molecules, don't create antibiotic resistance and sometimes offer more effective treatment.

The book goes on to describes "the systemics" - herbs that work against a high spectrum of bacteria and who's constituents easily cross into the bloodstream. Following the "systemics" the author describes herbs that have a more local treatment - either not effective against a broad range of bacteria or that don't easily cross into the bloodstream. Following those two chapters, is a chapter that seems to be the most original work of the author - a collection of herbs which interactions help the systemic and localized herbs - the synergists.

In addition, Herbal Antibiotics contains information about immune boosting herbs and a herbal-medicine and a chapter on herbal medicine making which covers tinctures, decoctions, essential oils, measuring etc.

What drove me to the author is his style. It is rare that someone can convey information in a way that requires no effort from the reader and Stephen Buhner is such a person. One almost reads his book like an adventure book. Unfortunately, some of the information assumes a level of knowledge that may be way over the head for most people. While it's not crucial to understating the whole, I was dearly missing pointers on how to get that additional knowledge.

To be honest, reading anything by Buhner is on the edge of my comfort zone. On one hand, he sources his statements and prefaces any inference as such. On the other, he seems to believe in homeopathy and conspiracy theories regarding medical companies and he calls himself an earth poet. What's even worse he likes Paul Krugman.

Nevertheless, the book itself is fine. It's even more than fine - it's an excellent source on herbs and their uses in combating bacterial infections!

Reading this got me thinking of The Walking Dead: the Naturopathic version would be antibiotic / antiviral resistance gone crazy, the Zombies are the artifact of some pharmaceutical intervention and Rick Grimes is a cop searching for a herbalist. Ok, Hollywood's not going to be picking up my pitch anytime soon but reading this book, it has an apocalyptic undertone.

So even though I'm a Naturopath I learnt a lot from this book and it piqued my interest in herbs not currently in our Australian dispensaries. And I'll be checking the references out in Pubmed.

It runs through the reasons for antibiotic resistance, how and why we can counter this with whole plant (rather than reductionist single constituents) herbal medicine, a pretty detailed materia medica on each main herb mentioned and how to make your own remedies if so inclined.

I enjoyed so much I raced into the next one.

SO happy with this book. Lots of historical information and current scientific data. It's very in depth and a little complex at times. I've read reviews with people complaining about the complexity of the information but I didn't think it was too crazy. There was some really useful information on some herbs that I currently use and how I've actually been using them improperly. Essentially wasting my money. If I never get anything else out of the book, it was worth the $20 for that. :)

A great reference book as well as a good read for anyone interested in herbal medicine. He gives compelling information on why it is essential for us to start using herbal antibiotics as opposed to pharmaceutical ones. Gives information on studies done and teaches how to make your own herbal extracts. Also gives places where you can find the herbs discussed. A must have book for all herbalists and those interested in taking more control over their own health.

3.5 stars. I learned more about the top antibiotic herbs, the effectiveness of antibacterial spices in food, immune system herbs, qualities of and uses for honey, and the different ways to prepare herbs for use. A quick read, and a good book to keep for reference.

This book changed my perspective about lab-making antibiotics. It will move the view of the reader in a way that he will start to realize how much shit doctors&science pretend to know..
Incredible information for someone who is looking to add more knowledge about medical stuff.

Please, stop taking antibiotics that are not absolutely necessary! If you are not already completely freaked out by antibiotic resistant superbugs, you will be after reading this! However, this book is filled with up to date information on the advances in comprehensive herbal medicine that can battle those deadly bacteria. Everyone should own a copy! Our health, the health of our children and the health of our planet depend upon it!

Awesome! Very technical. I am not a doctor so I had to look up most of the words in what I call the second half of the book. The first part explaining the reason for the book, the importance of herbs and how they can help was...hopeful. The writers are intelligent and thorough. I am glad to have read it and have it as a reference on my shelf.

Best with the companion book on herbal antivirals by the same author. I think everyone should own a printed copy of these books. Drug resistant pathogens kill more of us every day and modern medicine is failing to help.

Everyone has something we all struggle with but if health complications are what you struggle with then I will advise Never give up. I suffered from genital warts for many years. I tried everything from laser to freezing and all kinds of local injections, and every time it failed I felt more isolated, sad and hopeless. I had surgical removal and all my warts still weren't gone. They told me if I continue to have sex with high risk individuals I might get brand new growth like catching cold again, but the ones they remove will never grow back. I almost thought Herpes couldn't be cured till I did research on Holistic medicine and came across Dr Odia Herbs formula, The product is 100% effective, Within a period of 3 weeks, I had a tremendous change. It is really amazing how herbs can actually heal most chronic diseases if only the hospital would start referring people to use more of a nutrition formula when treating diseases and infections. visit    ( worldrehabilitateclinic.com)

'Herbal Antibiotics: Natural Alternatives For Treating Drug Resistant Bacteria', by Stephen Harrod Buhner

A good resource guide for alternate methods on dealing with infections.

Tip: timing; knowing when to use natural methods and when it's gotten out of control and it's time to go see a health-care provider, is crucial!

I love the concept of this book because it is so necessary to have ways to fight bacterial infections without antibiotics, yet I feel like it wasn't terribly user-friendly. The author redeemed himself a bit later in the book with the way content was laid out, at least.

.
.
Za możliwość przeczytania i zrecenzowania książki dziękuję @bialywiatr11

The first part of the book was written well. It really made me think about staying away from antibiotics and of course out of the hospital. The second part was on herbal remedies. I read this as part of continuing education credits and is something I am really interested in. It gave me good information on alternative to antibiotics and I will definitely keep this book and use it as a reference. Some of the information was presented as the opinion of the author which seems a little less credible but I think overall it is a great book to have on hand.
