"Dona Paula" by Joseph Canisius Dias is more than just a historical romance novel set in Goa's Portuguese colonial days--it is a fine example of quality writing about a young lady and an army officer. Paula, The lady-in-waiting to Lino's wife discovers the Captain's wife in an adulterous act with another man; Threatened, Herodiana is determined to get rid of her at any cost. With the careful weaving of true history with romance, "Dona Paula" is truly a pleasure to read.
It was a very interesting story and gave character to the lady all Goans have heard of, but not many think of - Paula. Having a town named after her - she definitely must have done something right, but we don't even give it a thought.
The book also brings to light the Inquisition - a part of our History we fail to remember. Consciously fail to remember. While everyone remembers the Portuguese with nostalgia, the brutal Inquisition is part of the legacy they left behind.
A nice read for Goans to know a teeny bit more about Goa, since we hardly take/make/have the time to get to know about Goa's past by actually studying about it. Also a subtle reminder about how History books tell only one side of the tale.
