Policewoman One - My Twenty Years on the L.A.P.D.

Rate this book
The gritty, streetwise, true personal story of a top female L.A. cop--a real-life version of Cagney and Lacey. Glossing over nothing, Hays talks frankly about her undercover work as a prostitute, about entrapping rapists, cornering killers, shooting and being shot at, but above all, about her passion to see justice done.

This was a great read that never dragged for a minute. Full of all kinds of interesting, often utterly zany anecdotes. Even the ugliest stories in here are handled lightly, moving quickly to the next situation that comes along. It's all in keeping with the memoirist's personality; this is a woman who never wanted her routine to get stale and who always hit her stride in a crisis. She doesn't seem to have had a single dull moment in her life. Read this one! (Unless you have a problem with F bombs.)

This was an enjoyable read. My problem is that I like, actually prefer, action police memoirs. But I did like her style and her short recounts of dealings with people, not always criminals but co-workers. I would love to see a more in-depth account. She did not strictly rely on her weapons but used her mind to assess and contain any situation without violence. Females are different as cops than their male counterparts. Talking and attempting to de-escalate is great if it is a viable choice. But times have changed and there is a bigger amount of crimes being done than 40-50 years ago.

Very interesting and informative, one-of-a-kind book! Made me feel better about being a woman... there really are things that women can do much better than men! Some crude language, but what do you expect when it's the LAPD?? Learned a lot, and totally enjoyed it!
