Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
A window into the insanity fair that toured Europe preceding the Second World War. Written with tastes of humor in between opinionated insights of the political atmosphere in Europe in the months leading to the War.
Thoroughly enjoyable, insightful and harrowing read. I’d recommend it to anyone with an interest in WW2, politics or journalism.
The book starts well, full of insight and prescient comments about the rise of Nazism as seen by a reporter who was on the spot, but then eh turns out to be a rabid anti-semite who completely elides the oppression which was happening under his nose. I only read this because H. E. Bates recommended it in his memoirs, which might say a thing or two about him.
