About the author

Jamie Buckingham was the founder of the Tabernacle Church in Melbourne, Florida. He was the author of Run, Baby, Run (with Nickey Cruz), Shout it From the Housetops (with Pat Robertson), Ben Israel (with Arthur Katz) and 34 other books. Buckingham was editor for Charisma Magazine until his death in 1992.

This is the last book I've read for 2019. It's light and is a great invitation to follow Christ. I believe it's not very convincing, however.

Estaba leyendo a Amélie Nothomb en una plaza mientras un grupo de cristianos jóvenes bailaba con camisetas de su grupo. Al terminar una de las chicas se acercó y me ofreció este libro. Yo no suelo rechazar nada y, ya que estaba, lo he leído.

Es una lectura rápida y bastante fácil. Literariamente es bastante espartano, por no decir pobre, y tiene la típica estructura de narrativa comercial norteamericana, tan usada en libros de autoayuda, con testimonios y pasos claros a seguir. Eso sí, exige un salto de fe y una interpretación muy peculiar para tragar cosas como que todos somos pecadores, que hay que arrepentirse y que hay que dejar que el espíritu santo dirija nuestra vida. A mí todo eso nunca me ha convencido y este libro no ha conseguido cambiarlo.

Eis um resumo do principal que retirei da leitura: Deus não é apenas para os famosos, os ricos ou para aquelas pessoas respeitáveis que se vestem bem para ir à igreja no domingo. Deus é para todo mundo. Ele ama os que já estão sem esperança. Ele ama os alcoólatras, os viciados, os que já perderam a força para viver. Ele ama o desempregado, a mulher que se enredou na teia do adultério e da prostituição, o adolescente solitário, o homem de negócios fracassado. Ele ama você, e se você permitir, Ele não só lhe mostrará um novo caminho, mas lhe dará a força para viver. Nosso problema não é a falta de objetivos, mas sim termos objetivos errados. A única condição que Deus nos apresenta é que O façamos ser o maior prazer de nossa vida. Todos nós temos uma escolha: viver conforme Deus quer ou como nós queremos. Assim como há certas leis físicas que governam este universo físico, há certas leis espirituais, certas verdades, que governam nosso relacionamento com Deus.
A primeira lei é o amor de Deus para conosco. Esse amor envolve um plano para cada um de nós.
A segunda lei é que o pecado (tudo o que é contrário ao amor) nos separa de Deus. Essa separação interrompe o plano que Deus tem para a nossa vida, que se baseia em sucesso, prosperidade, saúde, felicidade, enfim, plenitude suprema.
A terceira lei dada pelo livro é que Jesus Cristo é a única provisão para o pecado do homem. Deus se encarregou de construir uma ponte sobre o abismo que nos separa d’Ele. Jesus Cristo é o simbolismo perfeito de que o amor de Deus está acima de todo e qualquer erro que possamos cometer, desde que purifiquemos nossa mente e coração através do arrependimento e da busca de uma nova conduta ou reparação do erro quando possível.
A quarta lei é receber individualmente a Cristo como nosso salvador através da fé, ou seja, significa deixar o amor ser a prioridade e a intenção maior em todos os nossos atos.
Diz o livro que nosso relacionamento com Deus não é obtido por obras, mas sim como um dom de Deus. Nenhum de nós jamais poderia conquistar ou merecer o perdão e o amor de Deus. Ele, porém, o coloca gratuitamente à disposição de qualquer pessoa que deixe de confiar em suas boas obras humanas e em seus esforços limitados e dependa exclusivamente de Jesus Cristo para a salvação eterna de sua vida. Não precisamos esperar uma recepção divina. Deus é que está esperando que nós O recebamos. Deus às vezes diz “não” a nossos pedidos. No entanto, Ele jamais diz “não” sem ter uma resposta melhor esperando por nós na próxima curva do caminho. O autor dá sugestão para que tenhamos um caderno de oração. Escreve-se o pedido na frente e no verso da página anota-se quando e como Deus respondeu ao pedido. Segundo relato pessoal ele diz que, olhando em retrospecto, descobriu que noventa e sete por cento das suas orações nos últimos cinco anos tinham sido respondidas, e as demais estavam sendo respondidas.

Practical and simple guide to finding and accepting the Christian faith. This will not be for everybody, 3 stars because it could have easily included more ‘meat’ and depth for the sceptic. As a believer I know the freedom from anxiety, the power and confidence that come when that God-sized hole in each of us is replaced with a Higher Power. So as a recommendation for others to pick up this book, I leave the old Anglican saying, “All may, some should, none must.”

Este libro tiene algo especial. Logra captar tu atención y te alienta a hacer cosas especiales, te imprime eso para lo cual fue escrito: fuerza para vivir. Es un libro corto de 147 páginas pero me tomé el tiempo para leerlo con calma y re-leerlo, porque al terminarlo la primera vez me quedó una ligera sensación de que estuviera perdiendo algo, de que algún detalle se me hubiera escapado, y así fue, te da la posibilidad de descubrir nuevos elementos en cada lectura. Se lee muy fácilmente. Es lectura ligera que te deja valiosas lecciones y enseñanzas de vida.

I saw a TV ad for this book back in the early, early 80's when I was on my search for a church. I called and they sent me the book 100% free with no obligations at all. They did not seek nor did they accept donations. They did not put me on a mailing list. This book was purely for me. It was chockful of testimonies of people who had embraced Christianity. At the time I was very inspired by some of the stories. I wonder if I would be so if I were to read it today?

One of the books I've read during the time that I'm beginning to open my heart to God. It's a treasure, to think that this book had been lying around the house since I was a kid! It's mom's. I used to think of this book as "negligible", like part of the everyday mess. I finally read it when I was in 3rd year college. Now I couldn't thank it enough for staying in our shelves just gathering dust through the years. It touched me eventually.

This book has good practical help for implementing spiritual disciplines, but Buckingham's theology is found wanting. He uses Campus Crusade for Christ's shallow and unbiblical "Four Spiritual Laws" to present the gospel, and tries to mold the Bible to his illustrations, often compromising the biblical teaching. There are some insightful nuggets though.

A quick and easy book to read. Wonderful and educational and inspiring to Christians and soon-to-be Christians. Perhaps a little dated now, especially since it was published the same year I was born! But still lively. I think a serious student would be able to tap into this Power for living.
