A duck marvels at how wonderful it is to be a duck, with feathers, webbed feet, and wings that can fly, from the time he is hatched until he becomes a dad.
A cute, rhyming story that follows one male duck from when he hatches and learns he's a duck to when he's a father watching his own ducklings learn they're ducks. In the beginning, when the duck is learning all about being a duck, he celebrates every small thing--which I liked very much. I could see it being a wonderful jumping off point for a teacher to get children to celebrate all the small things that make them who they are. No aspect of who he is is too small for duck to celebrate. He continues to celebrate as he gets older--and even meets a girl duck! Woven into the narrative and illustrations of their life together are some educational bits, like how female ducks look different than male ducks, how they need to create a nest in anticipation of the babies, etc. Books that teach without being obvious are always a plus for me. In the end the duck's enthusiasm overflows as he gets to be a dad and celebrate each of his ten ducklings lives just like he celebrated his own. I loved ending on that very positive note.
Who would of thought how wonderful it could be to be a duck! This cute story feels like a bit of an oppoising side to The Ugly Duckling, as this main character is overjoyed to be a duck. A fun story to read, I thought this book was well written and with great illustrations. Even the way each sentence is written on the pages suits the story well. Also a good book for children to use for practicing rhyming words, this one is a keeper!
I enjoyed the confidence of the young duck in the book. I think this book is a good confidence builder for the young reader who may be trying to fit in or may have some questions about himself or herself. Or may be thinking that there is no one else like him or her. It is also a good book for sharing that everyone can make new and lasting friends of another gender. It also includes rhyming words and phrases.
This is a fun, peppy autobiography of a mallard duck, following his youth through having a family of his own. It's an entertaining tale, with many opportunities to "Quack" along with the story. The illustrations are interesting and sweet. Our girls enjoyed this story and it was fun to read aloud.
While most children's books seem to cast ducks as underdogs - this one celebrates duckness. I loved it. Favorite quote: "It gives me a thrill when I open my bill and I quack!"
Upbeat and a little cheesy, I did not expect to see a duckling grow up to be a dad. But it's a possible growing up book for kids interested in how ducks grow up or just growing up in general.
I feel like this could be used in a lesson of some sort. I haven't figured out an angle yet, but I'm working on it. Nicely illustrated and I like the text.
This is a really cute story about a duck being so happy to be a duck! He finds a girl duck for his wife and soon the have baby ducks. This is an easy read and the repetitiveness makes it easy for kids to follow.
