An incredible insight into the world of climbing. The book covers, in detail, the relationships of the people involved and the physical effort of the direct route Eiger climb of 1966. It is high drama and explores the psychology of the mountain climber and what compells someone to pursue such a risky venture, including the impact on those around them. Philosophically considering the meaning of life itself and the notion of ambition and teamwork.
Meh, took a long time with a LOT of backstory to get to the actual climb. It felt like a wall of text and a million people who may or may not be involved in the rest of the story. From the climb on it was great.
There is a lot of biographical detail and it is sometimes hard to remember this for individual climbers. The best part is the outstanding description of the final sections of the climb.
