“documents Jurisic’s attempt to trace the story of her aunt Gordana, a glamorous figure who left rural Yugoslavia in the 1950s and whose subsequent experiences involving false identities and espionage remain mysterious. Jurisic presents her careful, fruitful research in a series of illustrated notebooks that recall WG Sebald’s approach to memoir, history and reflection."

That was a special experience. This is so much more than a book, although the writing and story themselves would easily stand alone. However, the object itself had an immediate effect: the weight, the feel, the paper choice, the art work, the attention to detail that is close to overwhelming. I imagine the author (really 'artist' here) is probably a perfectionist, and this entire project has been an enormous, exhausting labour of love. And, man, can you feel it! Holding it, turning each page, studying each photo brought a depth, richness and almost reverence to my reading experience that I imagine will remain wholly unique.
