It's...ok
A cosy mystery doesn't have to be clever or hold suprises, it's more about the feel. Cosy, charm in the characters and the every day. This, lacks that.
Peter beyond his 'charge nurse voice' never shows himself competent, he's a Mary Sue bumbling around and fainting in fear.
I couldn't understand why he'd investigate, why his mother would ask it of him. But there is no mystery. The murderer is completely obvious from the start. As is the associate. The little extra reasoning just eye-rolling. If the Cosy charm was there that wouldn't matter but it wasn't so I was frustrated with Peter's lack of basic intelligence. It was hard reading past halfway, because he wasn't seeing in front of his nose.
There's plenty gossipy locals but Peter shuts that down, so never on board with a potential quirky local vibe.
The romance was lack lustre. Described from Peter's pov Lorne has little appeal, tall, brightly dressed, it's more about his baking. Zero chemistry beyond a little 'other' magical something he has going.
There's a number of editing issues; misused/misspelt/missing words.
All the ingredients I like. Murder, scenic backdrop, romance present but not main focus. So very disappointed it didn't work for me. Second book by this author I've tried with largely the same issues. Had so much promise, favourite genres and Welsh setting should make this Welsh girl happy. But I guess not an author for me.

The author is one of my auto-buys since I like his longstanding Daniel Owen mysteries. Having a regular sized MC was also a delightful surprise. I'm a little unhappy with the eventual outcome with

I want more MM cozy mysteries, but this was meh, it took way too long to read 118 pages. There just need more details and buildup, reminds me why I don't really gravitate towards novellas. This had not enough substance and a weird supernatural plotline (WTF was that). I am probably not going to read the other two, if I do its because they are novellas and I need more books towards my reading challenge.

This was a good book just not the best it was an entertaining read that I enjoyed despite that. The characters were interesting I especially liked Peter and Lorne they had good chemistry and Peter is an interesting character that has a terrible phobia of horses that is also a nurse. I liked how the mystery is slowly solved it made a lot of sense. The plot was interesting it starts with Peter finding the body of a very disliked person leads up to him meeting Lorne and him fainting because of horse phobia other things happen and we then have a good ending may read more of the series sometime.

I picked this novella up because Ripley Hayes is one of the three authors behind Alex Henry - the team that writes the DI Leon Peterson series, which I really enjoy. I'm familiar with the other two authors' solo work, so Hayes was the only one I hadn't tried yet. I thought starting with a novella would be a good introduction before committing to a full-length novel.
Unfortunately, this one didn't quite work for me.
The "magic" element surrounding Leon felt a bit off and didn't fully click for me. I also struggled to see the chemistry between Peter and Leon; it just didn’t come through as strongly as I'd hoped.
The mystery itself felt somewhat underdeveloped as well. I’m not sure if that's due to the shorter novella format, but overall, the story didn't feel as fleshed out as it could have been.
A bit of a miss for me, sadly. Not going to continue with the rest of the series.

20% in - so far I hate it. Loser character who flails from one disaster to the next and so. Many. Americanisms.
Since when do British people say "crushing on someone" or "snarky"?!!! Ugh. Vile.
100% - yeah, this book had some good elements but was too simplistic and shallow to qualify as good overall. Under-developed baddies and Peter wasn't a particularly engaging character.
The stupid subplot with Enzo the horse put me off the main character and by the end, I was skim-reading and couldn't have cared less about anything bar who the killer was.
Also, what is with this author and gay men having pierced nipples??

I was definitely in the mood for a good cozy mystery and I was not disappointed. I really liked the Welsh coast setting as well as the characters, and the mystery was interesting.
I look forward to seeing the romance between Peter and Lorne blossoming and I'm really curious to see what else they will get into!

a bit awkward and stilted—you can tell hayes isn’t as certain of this character’s voice as she is with daniel’s—but still an excellent romp. had to remind myself about 30% in that this was billed as “cozy” which flipped the love interest and bad guy likelies around but that’s nothing to do with the writing.
the resolution doubled down on the awkward, unfortunately. I get the need to leave some aspects ambiguous due to the nature of the beast, but I’m with Peter’s mum on this one. this isn’t a good guy who happened to make a bad choice. this is a coward who isn’t used to being held accountable and doesn’t care who gets hurt OR KILLED so long as his day isn’t ruined. and like… ew. no. gross.

Start of a new series from Ripley Hayes. Lots of characters in this little cozy village. Everyone knows everyone’s business. I don’t understand how that doesn’t drive Peter crazy. The mystery was fun, and the romance is just a hint at this time with psychic Lorne. It will be interesting how things developed.

while this is a very short cozy mystery I did find it satisfying. The few characters are well drawn and the town begins to take on a life of it's own. If this was a one-off I might be a little harsher but as proof of concept it works. I look forward to seeing how things are fleshed out in the next volume.

Peter Tudor has returned to the small village of Abergwyn. He’s was an A&E nurse but made a change to a rural district nurse. As an A&E patients of all types came to him and he was kept busy. The rural district nursing has him driving around the county and visiting his patients and it’s a slower pace of life. He’s made the change to be closer to his Mum, Kay, who has MS. Returning to, what he feels is a boring life, has him facing his long time crush, Detective Adrian “Ade” Forest.
Lorne Stewart had gained a reputation when he first arrived in Abergwyn. The villagers didn’t like him much, and some still don’t. The animosity stemmed from the property that he inherited. But he’s liked by some because of the his baking and the sharing of the bake goods. Rumor has it he may be psychic, he just seems to know things. He has what people refer to as a Gypsy horse, by the name of Enzo and Charlie the dog.
Trying to keep in shape, hoping to impress his long time crush, Ade. Peter spots someone lying on the beach and as he get’s closer he can tell something is seriously wrong. With his experience in the medical field he tries to save the person, but it’s too late. He recognizes the dead man and calls for help. While he waits, a dog, a man and horse show up. The man reveals an odd statement to Peter about the dead man and introduces himself as Lorne Stewart.
From then on, there’s all types of odd and dangerous situations that occur and Peter will find himself in the midst of it all!
Ripley Hayes delivers a good start to this new mystery series. It’s very well written and a page-turner, for me. It’s filled with danger and suspense and just a touch of the eerie. I liked the characters of Peter and Lorne, right away you can feel that they will have a gradual connection.
The secondary characters were all fun. Peter’s, Mum Kay, isn’t totally helpless. She’s quite a surprise. I like her connection with her special admirer, Dave. Can’t leave out Enzo the horse and Charlie the dog.
I really enjoyed “No Accident at Abergwyn”, it has a very high potential in to turn into an intriguing mystery series. This is different from the “Daniel Owen Welsh Mysteries” series that Ripley Hayes wrote previously. I’m excited to see what develops with Peter Tudor and Lorne Stewart!

Charming and entertaining

What a delightful find! New to me author! Small village Welsh location, with all that entails. And it’s a cosy mystery.
That means the following elements. Busybody main characters, small community’s over abundance of gossip and intrigue, a murder or more , a romance however slow to build, and animals. A dog, cat, or in this story a charming dog and a horse!
Both of those belong to a bit of a magical man, Lorne Stewart, who along with Enzo the horse and Charlie the dog, have invaded the quiet village of Abergwyn, and settled into his field, and started baking his acceptance into the villagers hearts.
Recently returned home to Abergwyn is Peter Tudor. Once a A&E nurse but now a rural district nurse in order to return home to live with his disabled mother, diagnosed with MS. A mother who decidedly needs less help from Peter than he realizes.
The mother/son relationship is real, warm, and loving. Peter almost blindly not accepting the truth of the degree his mother is able to do on her own. The strong support system in place from neighbors and friends he’s been unaware of away from home.
Peter’s situation too is believable. He’s suffering from leaving a position and type of ER job he thrived in to go to one where his skills are wasted and he’s feeling cut off from others and maybe even depressed.
Hayes’ realistically, and with gentle humor and care, builds up her foundation and the personalities of the people who will make up the series and the stories we will invest our time in.
I was entertained, really got into the village life and people, and saw the start of the romance that will build.
I thought it ended abruptly. The villain was caught but there was still questions left over for the next book to dive into. Plus personally, Peter has much to ponder at the end.
I’m thrilled to find this author and new cosies to read. Definitely a recommendation! Plus great covers!

This was the beginning of a new series of a man who moves home because his mom has MS and loses his beloved job as a head nurse in an A and E in a large city. Eating and drinking to drown his sorrows this dutiful son is trying to stop gaining weight but its hard when his patients as a "Home Nurse" keeps feeding him cake...cake made by a mysterious man on a horse named Lorne. Ade is a childhood school mate who Peter lusted after from afar and he is just as snotty as he was in school...thus his battle with weight loss. Another old schoolmate he finds on the beach starts his journey into being a detective to find who was responsible. Lorne slowly pulls him in as he is on the beach after he discovers the body. Gradually friendship, suspicion, danger, anger and a gradual understanding that all is not as it seems in his little home town. This is a series that you won't want to miss as this first one keeps you guessing until the end and I am sure the next one will keep us on the edge of our seats too.

Peter was raised by his mum in Abergwyn, a small Wales village that doesn't have much tourism or visitors. He grew up wanting to leave it as quickly as he could, which he did, escaping to become a charge nurse. He moves back very reluctantly after her MS worsens, and he wants to be closer to Mum. First thing he notices is how small the town is. Second thing he notices is how handsome local policeman Ade, his crush from their schoolboy years still is. Third thing he notices is how kooky a new neighbor, Lorne, appears to be. Then he goes out for a morning run and stumbles upon the body of a detestable villager and is immediately roped into investigating his death by his Mum and her boyfriend, the next-door neighbor Dave.
This was short, not terribly deep, but still an interesting read. Told from Peter's POV as he sorts out the puzzle of mysteries. Even though most of the characters are fairly flat, the author makes Peter sympathetic even through his neuroses and suspicions. I enjoyed this.

Always follow the money
The Land Lorne inherited is worth a lot of money and there are relatives that think the land should be theirs. Lorne inherited the land because he was with the man in a hospice along side his mother and they became friends. Lorne is a very special man with a loving disposition and a deep empathy for others. Peter the resident nurse discovers the body of Rory and aims to find out if it was indeed murdered. Someone wants him out of the way and tries to kill his mum and him in there sleep or at least scare him off. He is more determined then ever now that his mother was almost killed. Him and Lorne become become friendly over the murder and there is definitely attraction. A gorgeous jerk of a cop getting in the way and doing everything in his power trying keep Peter away from Lorne and the murder.

Here’s hoping this is just a literary accident
This just didn’t work for me. I think it all boils down to the fact that I didn’t like the voice of the main character. I didn’t take to him, I didn’t take to the relationship between him and his mother and I didn’t take to the townsfolk either. But most of all I didn’t take to Ripley Hayes’ writing in this book. It felt juvenile, surface and empty. There was no rich insight as we saw in the Daniel Owen series and no emotional or dramatic hook to draw you in. If this was her experimenting with a cosy mystery series, it doesn’t work.
Will I read the second in the series… if I knew it got better I would as I’m keen to see this brilliant author writing at the same level she did in the “Daniel Owen mysteries”. But this new style and series is not working for me.

A very cute first entry in this series. The characters are great with huge potential and the setting is glorious with also lots of potential to drive story threads through is future novels. Peter is a nurse who has return to the village he grew up in to look after his mother who has MS. This story revolves around him meeting up with people he knew before he left, including an old flame. He meets a new really interesting man, Lorne who is quite eccentric and who he quite likes. Add in a dead body that seems to have been murdered and you have a classic mystery to solve. Great fun, looking forward to the next volume.

This cozy series doesn't hold a candle to the author's Daniel Owen (Undermined) series, but should that be a detraction? I don't think so. I thoroughly enjoyed this brief cozy mystery, and found Peter to be a very relatable MC.

Flash back...nice memories of a simpler time
I am old. This gave me a flash back to a bye gone era of time and those simple Murder She Wrote mysteries that you can still find repeating on some broadcast somewhere. There are some errors that editing missed, but they do not spoil the charm of the story nor the characters. Peter The Nurse is just as charming as Jessica The Writer. A great read to come down to earth after, and prepare for, the next Winters or Oney book.

It was an okay read, interesting enough to continue. I liked the idea of two very different characters coming together. Unfortunately the romance is quite lackluster, I didn't get any vibes at all. The whole set up is not bad, I can see more interesting things happening.
The crime was done okay, what I didn't understand was that there were no consequences for Abe. So...it was okay enough to try the second book.

I was thrilled to see that Ripley Hayes has started a new MM cost mystery series. This one was a totally different vibe but I really enjoyed it. Lorne and his menagerie may be just what Peter needs to snap out of his funk. Loved the secondary characters and the village atmosphere.

It’s fine. The mystery isn’t really much of a mystery, and the main character never really investigates it. The love interest is very bland and there is no chemistry to speak of. It’s also very short. There is nothing objectionable about the story, it’s just that nothing really happens from a character development point of view so it’s hard to know what the point was.
