Soul of the Wolf
The small mountain town of Riker's Bend, Montana is embroiled in a wolf-hunting controversy in which environmentalists struggle to save the endangered species while local ranchers grow angrier at the loss of livestock to the nocturnal predators. Into this powder keg comes a mysterious, young stranger who is wounded by a hunter and unable to speak English. A local rancher and Iraq war vet, Roy Dodson, feels sorry for him and takes him in. Little does he know there is more to this kid than meets the he is a werewolf with a dark, haunted past a century long. When two ominous Russian men come into town claiming to have lost their ""friend"", Dodson realizes that protecting the kid from their monstrous plan would require him to risk and possibly sacrifice everything, including his life.

Remember the time honored quote “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, well I started to do just that when I was offered a chance to review “Soul of the Wolf” by Shannon K. Murphy. How wrong I was, Soul of the Wolf is not your average werewolf supernatural story. It is a story that weaves supernatural with the dark side of society and the criminal underworld. This book is not for the faint of heart or the weak minded. In the words of the author “Do not expect Twilight”, and let me tell you it isn’t. Even though the book takes us for a ride through the dark twisted side of humanity, it also touches on what it takes to survive, to never give up and to overcome.
The book is set in a small mountain community of Riker’s Bend Montana, where the town finds themselves in the midst of a controversy that involves wolves, those who hunt wolves for money and the ones who seek to protect them from danger. In the midst of this chaos, Misha a stranger to the town is wounded, and finds his future entwined with Roy Dodson. Roy’s first instinct is to help and protect Misha without knowing in doing so would change his life forever and forcing him to take matters into his own hands to protect those he feels are under his protection even if it means risking everything even his own life.
The Soul of the Wolf, is one of the first books that I have read recently that puts the supernatural aspect of the story in the background, the author’s focus was more on the humanity within each of the characters. In the beginning we are introduced to numerous characters without really knowing how they were going to affect the story, which I found a bit confusing at first. My first impression quickly changed as the story revealed itself and the characters started evolve.
Though the characters seemed two dimensional the author’s ability to covey emotions such as fear, lust, desperation and horror of the actions and situations that the characters found themselves in really gave the characters the extra depth that I was looking for. Though I did find myself really wanting to know what drove the main characters such as Roy and Rachel. What experiences did they have in their lives that fuelled their reactions in any given moment? The character that I was emotionally engaged with was Misha. The author did a fantastic job at drawing me in to his inner world of torment and fear so much so that it was a tangible feeling as I read the book.
Within the pages of this book you will find a villain that is sheer evil and whose acts more times than came as a shock as I did not expect it. Sharron K. Murphey takes villains to a new level with Yuri, as well as tackling real life experiences that exist today that most people wish to ignore. The author did a fantastic job at creating a world that is so horrifying and yet believable and there were a few times that I made sure my doors were locked before going to bed.
The book is easy to read and the author’s writing style is easy to follow. What stood out most was the author’s ability to convey emotions as I mentioned before. This is what makes a good story, one that I can feel emotionally attached and invested in the characters. There was so much more I could have said but I don’t like to give away the story. I give big kudos to the author for her gritty and uncompromising writing style. I do want to mention that this is an adult themed book and is not for young adults. I for one am looking forward to reading more from this author. With that said I give this book 5 Stars.
