ABOUT ME

Maybe it's because my feisty grandma chased tarantulas around with a broom when we lived on an oil lease property when I was a baby that made me love danger and adventure. And maybe it was my father's spending nights as a trombonist with the bands of his day and his days spent drawing sketches that sparked my artistic side. Do you suppose that because my mother stood only four feet ten inches tall that I feel like a giant at five feet? And I'm sure my FBI (Full Blooded Italian) step-father, his seven brothers and sisters and their families are responsible for my LOVE of Italian food. That's who I am. Who are you?

My First Book, Peppy The Frog That I Wrote In The 2nd Grade

I'll always be a child at heart. Whenever I close my eyes, wonderful, funny, awful, embarrassing memories of middle school/junior high come flooding back to fill the pages of my contemporary novels. My childhood friendships and rivalries with old enemies all find their way into my books. I've even spied on my own kids for story ideas.

Unlike most kids who can't wait to grow up, I've gotten younger--at least my stories have. I've stepped into the world of 7 to 10 year olds.

I and my husband, Jim, live in Texas on Lake Lewisville north of Dallas. We are owned by our greyhound, Miller. Our favorite things to do are traveling the world and boating.

Not as enjoyable as the previous two Taffy books.

Fabulous Five adversary Taffy has gotten a bit part on a soap opera, and Jana and her friends are seething with envy. Interested in seeing her arch nemesis on screen, Jana gets sucked into the soap world and starts to believe that everyone around her is having dramatic soap opera-ish problems. She even convinces herself she has a lost twin sister! Overall it's pretty silly, but Haynes does do a good job at bringing it all back to the heart of Jana's insecurities and family issues.

Reading this series as an adult along with my fourth grade daughter is quite a different experience than reading them as a kid myself. Jana Morgan is such a horrible, bratty jealous girl and so are her friends. We are constantly told how snotty Taffy is, but in reality, Taffy is being bullied in such a horrible way that it's shocking. It's amazing how perspectives change.

This book is deeply weird! It's about a girl and her friends who seek revenge against and bully a popular girl, to the point where The humorous part of the story is that the MC sees stuff happen on soap operas and her vivid imagination leads her to believe those things are happening in real life. This part kind of reminds me of It All Began With Jane Eyre by Sheila Greenwald. But a lot of this is not really so funny, like Then there are some genuinely poignant parts, such as So the whole book is sort of a mish mosh. But I did enjoy reading it, and just like the main character, the author has a vivid, fertile imagination!

I have *issues* with this series. Taffy is definitely annoying but Jana and her friends are bullies. If you even have to question if your behavior has it might be time to take a good, hard look at yourself.

Taffy Sinclair Queen of the Soaps
Beth tells the others that Taffy got picked to be on the soap opera Internes and Lovers and Jana gets so upset over it she smushes her lunch and dips her elbows (she’s wearing a white sweat shirt) into her chocolate milk. Taffy will be absent that day and for three days next week. Randy comes by their table and asks Janna if he can speak to her. He tells her Curtis wants to talk to her about something. Curtis wants Jana to be a reporter for the Seninal all she has to do is write a great story. Curtis says if he doesn’t do better with stories he’ll be replaced. He says if she writes the story he’ll even give her the byline and the credit. So, she tells him she has a scoop. Taffy Sinclair is going to be on television.

Jana hopes he doesn’t tell where he got his information. Taffy meets Jana the next day at school with the school paper, but instead of being mad she’s happy. The article rads “Taffy Sinclar Queen of the Soaps” The Fabulous Five are furious tho. Taffy starts to read the story outload. Taffy says she didn’t know she was such a big fanand offers her (her) autograph. Jana’s friends understand when she explaisn what happened. Besides Taffy will only be in three episodes. Curtis comes up to Jana and thinks he did Jana a favor. She doesn’t correct him. But the more Jana thinks about reporting for the paper the more she warms up to it.

She also wonders what filming will be like for Taffy. Jana watches Interns and Lovers and gets wrapped up in the story of Cynthia and Chad. Briefly Taffy is dying of a sickness. Chad is trying to convince his girlfriend Cynthia she’s killing herself from dieting dangerously. It ends with Cad saying he won’t live without her and it’s announced he’s on the roof threatening tp jump. After the show, Jana thinks how Randy wouldn’t even have to go to this extreme. Then Beth calls.

They talk about how sickening Taffy’s performance was. (She really doesn’t do anything but cry-rather they show a tear on her face-). Jana says they (the Fabulous Five) can all watch Interns an Lovers the next day together. Everyone at school is talking about Taffy. Even Randy wants to know how she did. Jana tells him she didn’t watch. Only guillable people believe what they see on soaps. He says he didn’t watch because he was at football practice Jana slips up tho and says she didn’t have any lines. Beth covers for her tho and says she called and told her about it.

On the next episode, Taffy is supposed to get worse. Instead she gets better. All the Fabulous Five wonder what happened. Did someone goof with the scripts? Did her mother pay someone off? As for Chad, he sees a mugging about to happen and motions for the police but they think he’s about to jump. He *does* jump Then he runs over to the mugger and tackles him. Katie is disguised by it all but Jana thinks about how amazing Chad is (and compares him to how sensitive Randy is). Jana thinks about how she’s learning about people. If she can’t trust Taffy to die on screen how can she trust her in real life? Then she starts watching other soaps and analyzing the character’s. One of the characters has amnesia and Jana thinks about how she can’t remember much about her father and compares it to this wondering if this is what it’s like.

Taffy is surrounded by a crowd again the next day. She comes over to the Fab Five and tells them she got so many comments about her character dying they rewrote the script. She says tho that she won’t be dropping school to move to Hollywood. She’ll only be on the show three days a week.

Noticeably at lunch, Jana notices Melanie has eggs and an apple. She’s thinner and she hasn’t been bringing brownies to school. Melanie tells her she’s on a diet. Jana worries that Melanie might have anorexia like Cynthia. So she decides to look more into it. On the soap, Chad tells Cynthia she’s dying. Cynthia confesses that her father left her and she’s been trying to get in contact with him seeing that she she doesn’t have long to live. He wrote her back and tell her she has a twin sister. Jana looks at a picture of herself that looks like double images of her and wonders if she also has a twin. There’s a girl in the picture in a kiddie pool that Jana vaguely remembers.

Beth calls and starts talking about the show. She asks Jana what if she found out she had a win. Jana doesn’t say what she’s thinking to Beth. After thecall Christie calls and says they all have to come over. Taffy’s been flirting with Mr. Scott (the teacher Christie has a crush on). She says they have to get even. Christie wants Jana to write an expose about Taffy, She can put Curtis’s name on it,, Taffy won’t even know about it until she gets back. Jana kinda likes the idea. Jana has enough info in her old notebook to write a book. Then they all start reading things they wrote down about Taffy in their notebooks.

Jana tries to hint around to her mother about having a twin but she just gets this faraway expression in her eyes and says Pink has a twin. In this book, she’s called it off with him because she thinks he stepped out. Jana gets an idea to ask her father about her twin just like Cynthia. If saying she’s on her death bed worked for her, Jana will try the same thing.

The next day at school, everyone is standing around looking at Melanie who looks great. Jana decides Melanie must be anorexic and buys three candy bars attempting to *save* her. But she’s distracted by Randy who tells her that that many candy bars will give her cavities. This seals it for Jana that Randy likes her. At lunch, Melanie says she thinks Scott Daley likes her, All her friends complament her on how great she likes. Beth even tells her she ought to try out for a soap opera. Jana isn’t even able to slip the candy bars in her gag.

Christie invites her over (to watch the soap) but Jana says she has some other stuff to do. This time on the show Taffy has lines and delivers them in a fake Southern accent. Jana starts to work on her expose and she’s pleased with the results, Now everyone will know the truth about Taffy. After this she watches another soap. That night, Jana’s mom makes a special dinner and says Pink convinced her that she was making a big deal out of nothing, but wasn’t that what happened to Samantha and Micheal on the soap she watched tat afternoon?

On the soap, the win is told that she has a sister that’s dying and she wants to go be with her. Jana wonders if this is how her own twin will feel. Jana decides to take Beth to the bowling alley and spy on Pink after a dream she had where he’s staring at a girl at the snack ba that turns out to be a girl from one of the soaps she’s watching. They follow Pink but he ducks into the men’s room.

When Jana g gets to school, she finds out the expose has her name on the by line not Curtis’s TTaffy finds out and is furious. Jana gets called to the office and gets chewed out by Mr. Scott who says that if the editor of the paper would not have been sick it never would have been printed. Then he kicks her off the paper. Randy doesn’t speak to Randy when she speaks. He just walks off.

Taffy is absent from school a couple of days. She’s not even on the soap. It’s about Stephani (the twin) getting ready to see Cynthia. Beth thinks Taffy might have offed herself. Later, Beth tells Jana to meet with her in the girls rest room. When all the others are there she shows them a note in Taffy’s handwriting that says she just can’t go on. Beth gives Jana the note. They promise if they hear anything they’ll call each other later. Jana convinces Randy to go talk to Taffy and shows him the note. He says it’s not as a favor to her because he use to think she was nice but now..

When Jana gets home, her mother tells her her father called upset and asks why she would tell him she was dying. She tries to tell her about the soap and she tries to give examples about how they really come true in real life (Melanie having anorexia and Pink fooling around). Jana’s mom says she’s letting her imagination run away with her and then she shows her the ring Pink gave her. She says tho she wanted to ask her about it and she’s not sure right now that she wants to change their lifestyles.

She also shows her (her) birth certificate and it’s marked single. Then she tells her the reason Jana’s dad doesn’t come around is that he has a drinking problem and that he’s ashamed. Randy calls after this and says Taffy wasn’t going to come back to school, but because she heard what Jana did she’ll be back. The note was from another soap she was trying out for. She’s going to quit Interns and Lovers and probably won’t go out for another one because her grades have become bad and her mom won’t let her. Randy says he’s sorry he got mad at her. What she did was mean but she did try to s find Taffy. Then he asks her to come see him play football and out for pizza afterward.

My Thoughts:
It’s interesting to believe that Jana got so caught up with soap opera’s that she begin to actually hallucinate them in real life. I was never a big fan of soap operas personally so, I’m not quite sure if this can actually happen. The only one I really liked was so bizzare and off the wall that there was no danger of me thinking the events of it could really happen to the people I knew. But I did think it was ssad that it took Janna writing to her dad she was dying to get a response out of him. I know what it’s like to have a dad that has that kind of problem, but my dad doesn’t use that as an excuse not to be apart of my life. So, I’m not sure if I do or do not accept this excuse. On one hand I don’t think it is, but on the other if his problem is so out of control and to the point where he’s stumbling around her and talking in the way that alcoholics talk (because sometimes the alcohol will make them say things to you that you have to really be a strong person to separate when the alcohol is talking through them and not take offense) then its probably best he does. But then for his daughters sake you’d think he’d get some help. Still, I know that sadly this just most of the time isn’t how it is. It was interesting to see that this is the book where Melanie turns into a knockout. I’m still kind of wondering tho why these books all have “Taffy Sinclair and the..” like they are going to be from her P.O.V. She’s in them but shouldn’t they be called “The Fabulous Five and the..

Found a few of these books at a used bookstore last weekend for a dollar each, so I grabbed them. I know I read them when I was pretty young originally, and I didn't remember just how .. awful? The main character was. Jana is a bully, flat out, and her friends reward her for it and often back her up. The story is about how much these five girls hate a beautiful classmate- I wish the store had had a copy of the first book in the series, as other than her being pretty and having the audacity to develop breasts early, I don't remember Taffy ever doing anything cruel to these girls- their notebooks that Jana uses to write "an expose" about Taffy were filled with nasty rumors and innuendos that seem to be nothing more than a collective list of reasons they manufactured in their heads to be angry about attention she receives. That said, the author does show how deeply parental rejection and absence can affect a preteen girl in a semi-realistic way, with Jana concocting ridiculous soap opera inspired fantasies about why her father left her family, and the hope she feels when she creates this fantasy, that her mother later refutes, explaining that her dad was basically just a drunk. I do find the latchkey generation's childhood experience pretty realistic in this story, though. Curious as to if all 4 of the books I got will have any redemptive arcs for the characters in this book series whom we are supposed to root for? Guess I'll find out soon, as they're very short, quick children's reads. 2 stars.

Taffy Sinclair books were bad entertainment for me when I was a kid, but I don't remember reading the book about Taffy Sinclair breaking into show business by becoming an actress on a soap opera TV show and I believe Taffy Sinclair was always portrayed in that kind of dignified matter as if the author Betsy Haynes had something to say about the book Carrie by Stepen King. The plain Jane group of girls that hated Taffy Sinclair were catty little girls that were jealous of Taffy because she was beautiful. Why would I "hate" Kelly LeBrock 'because" she's "beautiful" might be a reference to Taffy Sinclair. You're Gen X kid like me if you remember those Pantene commercials with Kelly LeBrock. Maybe you were a baby boomer comedienne in the eighties that made fun of those Pantene commercials with Kelly LeBrock telling all of us "don't hate me because I'm beautiful". Well, I don't think I would be the plain Jane catty girl picking Taffy Sinclair. Maybe I'd hope a gorgeous girl like Taffy Sinclair would like me as a best friend. I would love Angelina Jolie as a friend!

As a kid every Saturday we went to Kmart, and every Saturday my mom would let me buy one thing, and it was ALWAYS a fabulous five book. (The cover looks like a spiral notebook cover... I thought that was very clever)
I also managed to track down all the Taffy Sinclair books at a thrift store.

Taffy Sinclair is such a misunderstood character. She was definitely not the nicest person, but I think a lot of that stemmed from insecurity.

I wonder if this series is still at my parents I would definitely read them again.
I remember in the Taffy books Melanie was chubby and it make references to her eating brownies and then one day she was like NO i don't want the brownie... and then she got skinny.
This is a very vague memory... so don't quote me on this one, what you CAN quote me on is that Taffy had a crooked bicuspid, and Jana ate cream cheese and jam sandwiches,... which I tried because of her and they were DIS-GUS-TING, and I never trusted her again.

I could best describe this as "so bad it's good." Jana's delusions are absolutely hilarious, and I'm not even sure if they're meant to be. :P
