Orphaned when her peaceful seaside village is attacked by savages, Nyna seeks refuge among suspicious strangers and struggles to build a new life, with the help of Joog, in a new and very different world, in a story set against the backdrop of the ancient Caribbean islands. Original.
My first six novels, written under the name Lynn Armistead McKee, were historical fiction set in Florida about 2,000 years ago. Now writing as Lynn Sholes, I have recently changed genres and I am co-writing a 3-book thriller series(Cotten Stone Mysteries) with Joe Moore. The first, THE GRAIL CONSPIRACY, was released in September 2005 as part of Llewellyn Publications launch of their new fiction imprint, Midnight Ink. THE LAST SECRET is scheduled for fall of 2006, followed by the third book, INDIGO RUBY to be released in the fall of 2007.
Next to historical westerns I have a weak spot for Prehistorical reads as well. There is just something about the primitive, and simple way of life that just appeals to the reader in me. Magic plays a very important part in this genre, and the natives and indigenous people are very superstitious. In Daughter of the Fifth Moon we are introduced to Nyna, she is part of the Taíno tribe who were among the indigenous people of the Caribbean. When her home is attacked her parents shove her out to sea in an empty enemy dugout, hoping the current and wind will bring her to rest on another Taino island. However she ends up in a complete different world than hers. She awakens on a beach and close to the home of the Ais tribe, who were a tribe of Native Americans who inhabited the Atlantic Coast of Florida.
She looks a bit different than them, and is perceived as dangerous and cursed. Joog, who finds her on the beach wants his people to help her. Eventually she is included into the tribe, but isn't welcomed by everyone. When things go wrong, people are quick to put the blame on her presence. Nyna is a very strong person, and my heart broke for her. She lost her parents and is in a unknown part of the world, and she doesn't know how to act. There were awful characters in this book, that did such horrific things. But there were also very warm and sweet characters that embraced Nyna as their own. I really enjoyed this book, however I wish there was a bit more romance.
This book will move you beyond words. You will see and feel the world as it was so many years ago when the Native Americans lived in Florida. This story will teach you how things were. You will learn more than you can ever imagine as you read a book that is SO well written it is like an art form.
This is the 6th book in a series. The ENTIRE series is WELL worth your time and money. You will find yourself wanting to go back to read book 1 as soon as you have completed book 6. Why? Because you enjoyed the series! It's incredible!
This book continues the story of some of the characters in Spirit of the Turtle Woman, and it was just as intriguing to me. I would like to read more in the series. Since the first two were the only ones I had in the 90's, I hope the library has some of the others.
