He faces the death penalty unless a desperate Callie can find a way to prove his innocence.

AND DESIRE

Former Navy SEAL Chase Mattingly lost his nerve after a near-fatal diving accident. Investigating for Callie is his chance to prove he still has guts. And a heart. Nice story. I definitely like Chase as a tortured hero. His fears and actions seem believable. It was nice to see how he fights his demons. This is probably the best part of the story. I also like Callie’s brother. Again, he is believable. The book has some original ideas and Chase makes a very good hero.

I enjoyed this romantic suspense set in the Florida Keys. Psychologist Callie Carlson's younger brother, Jeff, is ecstatic about finding an abandoned boat adrift at sea, but his excitement soon turns to horror when he is accused of murdering the boat's crew. Callie is doing all she can to try to prove her brother's innocence, but it will take the help of her new neighbor and former Navy Seal, Chase Mattingly, to come up with any real evidence. Chase has a few demons of his own to conquer in the process though, due to a recent near-fatal diving accident, which occurred in the very spot Jeff found the abandoned boat. Is this just a coincidence, or are these two incidents somehow connected?

It seems to me I'd never read anything by this author before. An interesting array of rather wounded and psychologically crippled individuals, it's impressive that the hero and heroine are able to be distracted from themselves enough to fall for each other. The story treads water for quite a while, with the main protagonists thrashing about a bit ineffectually, but finally they warm up to each other enough to get into a sort of stride, and the story becomes easier to read and more interesting. There were some rather astute descriptions of fear and varying degrees of terror, but I'm not sure I'll be racing to pick up another book by this author.
