One day... one moment... one letter.
One lie.
That's all it took to change the course of their lives.

Gavin McBride
She blindsided me. Broke me. Shredded me.
And now she's back, thinking I did the very same thing to her.
Someone is lying. It's not me. But the thing is - it's not her either.
When I reach out to her, I get more than I bargained for. Much more.

Baylor Mitchell
I was eighteen when he left me.
I found a way to survive. Without him. Without us. Without the future he promised.
Now, a chance meeting threatens everything I know to be true.
But loving him again isn't worth the risk I'd have to take or the secret I'd be forced to reveal.
Or is it?

Purple Orchids is an angsty, second-chance romance. Friends to lovers to enemies to friends to lovers (yeah, it's messy.)

This book is part of a series that can easily be read in any order.

Despite the fact that she is a romance writer, Samantha Christy's favorite television show of all time is The Walking Dead.

And contrary to the fact that her heroines drink things like wine and Cosmos, she prefers Bud Light.

She also loves fan mail and answers all of it.

She went to college and all that, getting a degree in something she never uses. She's also got a gaggle of kids (4) and a pretty decent husband.

This book takes place in present day and eight years earlier, when the characters were in college. I liked parts of the present day stuff, but I hated the college stuff.

Let's see how many tired NA cliches the "past" chapters held:
Manwhore H? Check.
Blushing virgin h? Check.
Unicorn h? Check. (She didn't wear makeup! She wasn't clingy! She ate burgers and fries! Instead of designer dresses she wore Dr. Suess t-shirts and converse! She was Just. So. Real.)
All other women besides the h were disposable sluts or scheming bitches? Check.
A huge misunderstanding that could have been resolved with a 30 second conversation? Check.

I've read this so many times already, there isn't anything new here, and I was bored. Thankfully, eight years later changes from Gavin's POV to Baylor's and the book got better. Baylor's skittishness was relatable, she hasn't seen/heard from this guy in eight years, she really doesn't know him anymore. But the fact that Baylor (a published author with 13 books) and Gavin (a film producer) were both staunchly avoiding social media for eight years is way too implausible. COME ON! Little things like this add up to major eye rolls.

Baylor's BFF Callie was annoying in her judgmental-ness, why does she keep taking Gavin's side when she doesn't even know him? It's been TWO MONTHS after nothing for eight years and she accuses Baylor of "stringing him along"? That's a crappy friend. Baylor didn't just have herself to consider and I thought it was wise to think things through.

The end of the book shifts back to Gavin's POV. I liked Baylor's thoughts on where home was for her and how money (and ocean views) can't buy that. The epilogue was sweet and exactly how I thought it would end.

I very rarely give five stars unless a work completely sucks me in, keeps me engaged and blows me away, and for the first 50% of this book, I knew I was giving it 5 stars. Where it lost that fifth star was in the last 40%.

Baylor Mitchell is the antithesis of every person, every female, in Gavin McBride's world. He comes from old Texas money and she comes from a salt-of-the-earth family of hardworking American Dream earners. When they (and their worlds) collide on a college campus, it sets off a beautifully-written and enchanting love story. The romance blossomed in a natural progression, with plenty of sweet/cute moments, laugh out loud moments, and plenty of moments of raw passion.

As admitted in the Book Description, the couple is torn apart by a lie and the second half of the tale is about the couple reclaiming their long lost love.

The first part of the book is written entirely from Gavin's POV, and the author's handling of it was clever and believable, with humor reminiscent of the book Tangled. The constant "dick twitching" was just a tad excessive, but again - it's from the male POV so is likely spot on. :)

I absolutely loved watching Baylor and Gavin fall in love. I loved watching that love transform him, and I kept holding my breath, waiting for "the lie" that tore them apart. The problem with "the lie" when it came was that the author had developed such a strong, sure bond and relationship between the hero and heroine that it seemed unbelievable that they would instantly turn from thinking the world of each other to thinking the worst. And with a villain so obvious as well. But new adults don't always make the wisest of choices.

The reconciliation in the second half is pretty swift and, therefore, the book could have been wrapped up around the 60-70% mark, in my opinion. I'm not saying that the last 40% of the book wasn't entertaining. It was just a little irrelevant and seemed more like just a bunch of stuff happening.

When you fall in love with a story and you get that feeling of "I wish it would never end," it's always a treat when the author takes you a bit beyond that moment of the HEA. For me, the last 40% of the book took us beyond the moment we knew the H/h would be together forever. It just took us a little too far beyond it until I really did want it to end. Not in a bad way. I still always loved the characters, but it got to a point of "okay - I'm ready for closure now."

Now that I've given my criticism, I must follow it up by saying that this is the best book I've read this year, and quite possibly the best in the last 7 months. Samantha Christy is a writer who I fully expect to transcend the indie sphere. Her talent deserves it, and I will be picking up her other books, for sure. In her Acknowledgments, she thanked her betas for helping her put out a book that could rival a traditionally-published novel, and she is absolutely right. It could.

Without hesitation, I recommend this book 100%.

1.5* and recapping of the entire plot ahead 😂😂............ so spoilers........

This was my first read by this author. It starts off with the H as wingman for his buddy and he comes across a flyer with a woman's picture, she's none other than his college girlfriend who broke his heart. He starts to tell his friend the story and so we live through Gavin and Baylor's initial romance in the first half of the book.

Initially I wasn't sure I'd like Gavin, he is a manwhore of epic proportions and made some douchebag comments that almost made me stop reading but I persisted. Then he meets Baylor, and from there we get a sweet Gavin. She at first has a boyfriend but they start off slowly as friends. Gavin is 100% dedicated to Baylor but he has a friend,Karen who's mentioned so much I smelled the drama pretty early on. In fact the entire situation with Karen being his friend and around so much and Baylor having her ex as her friend and around so much irritated me to no end. How could he have continued such a close friendship with a woman who he knows wants more than friendship from him. Then when Baylor was unable to make it to a function he took Karen which led to a huge fight between him and Baylor and he was even going to Brazil over break with her. Chris, too was just unnecessary angst. They were such good friends that she never considered how her boyfriend would view the situation??? I call bs. Baylor was a virgin, so she and Chris did not have sex neither did Gavin and Karen but these ppl were just props to create drama and oh boy did they. Karen goes to Gavin talking about Baylor's FB posts,he goes to her to ask about them and sees her with Chris. He believes Karen and leaves on his trip without talking to Baylor about her supposed cheating. When he returns Baylor's nowhere to be found. Brokenhearted he turns into a manwhore again for a few years until he agrees to marry Karen. For years they live as married friends with benefits 🤦

8 years later he meets a little boy at the hotel pool who looks a lot like him. Stunned to realize he has a son he confronts Baylor but realized something wasn't adding up. Of course after investigation it turns out bitchy Karen not only created the FB posts herself but also knew about the baby and sent Baylor a letter supposedly from Gavin telling her to have an abortion. He sets out to right the wrongs of the past. Pretty soon they meet, have sex and he confesses he still loves her. Baylor now a successful romance author surprisingly is the one to hold back. She'd been in a few relationships over the years but never loved another. So they get to know each other, he gets to know the kid then you'd think hea right? Nope Baylor has a stalker who now prolongs an already drama filled plot with her appearance. Said stalker leads to the death of Baylor's Nanny and then committs suicide. But wait......bitchy Karen makes a last ditch effort to get Gavin back by claiming to be pregnant even going so far as to find a Gavin look alike to impregnate her!!! Sometimes, just sometimes, too much imagination might not be a good thing!

We finally get a hfn ending hinting at another pregnancy.

This was a lifetime movie on crack........ Drama from beginning to end! I will not be continuing on with this series especially as book 2 is about the sister who has apparently already slept with half of the city and has started off here by sleeping with Gavin's partner who was basically an STD in a suit. #nopenotdoingit

Overall Opinion: This was a lot like the The Needing Moore Series Trilogy: Searching for Moore, Moore to Lose, & Moore than Forever. I really enjoyed that series and I knew from reading reviews that it was going to be similar, so I don't have a complaint about the similarities. Was it an original storyline? Not really. Was there some differences? Yes, some major ones too.

Storyline: This is Baylor and Gavin's story. They meet at UNC when they literally bump into each other Baylor's freshman year (Gavin is a sophomore). Baylor has a boyfriend at this time, so they decide to establish just a friendship even though there is a stronger connection between them. After they have established a great friendship and Baylor breaks up with the boyfriend (and long time friend from Conneticut), they change their relationship status to romantic. They fall in love. With some scheming from Gavin's childhood friend (that wants more than a friendship and is supported by his Dad in her pursuit for a romantic relationship because she comes from money), the couple is torn apart. They are reunited 8 years down the line when they happen to be in the same hotel. At this point, Baylor is a famous romance author and Gavin own a successful film production company. With many obstacles in their way and some good friends on their sides, they do eventually find their HEA.

POV: The story is broken into 3 parts. Alternating with Gavin, Baylor then Gavin's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good pace. I would have liked to experience their HEA a little more. It seemed like at the end it was a rush to tie all the loose ends.

H rating: 4 stars. Gavin. Handsome, ex-manwhore (until he meets Baylor of course), sweet soccer player with a Texan accent.

h rating: 4 stars. Baylor. Natural beauty, innocent, smart and strong woman.

Angst level: Low. Drama, but no tissues needed.

Heat level: Moderate. Some definite steamy times between the two, but not too much to take away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: They did have an epilogue that was 6 months down the road, but I do feel like it was kinda rushed at the end. The couple had so many issues that were against them

I don’t know why I picked up Purple Orchids. Maybe it was on my Amazon or Goodreads feed? It was a Kindle Unlimited read and so why not.

The thing is, I liked the premise of the book, but I totally forgot the premise when I actually sat down to read it. I would say the premise is slightly misleading and if I went into the book thinking that was what I was getting, I would have been a little disappointed. The premise reads a little angsty and highly dramatic.

Purple Orchids was a sweet read in my opinion with light angst. I don’t like angsty books so it 100% worked in my favor and I really enjoyed the story. I just think you shouldn’t go into the book with the premise in mind.

If you are like me and you hate reading the ending as the first chapter, I would skip the prologue / first chapter, I don’t remember what it was labeled. I HATE it when authors write foreshadowing in the first few pages. I also think you should go into this book blindly.

The book is pretty long and when my kindle said it would take me about 7 hours to read I thought maybe the author put two books into this edition, but nope it’s all Purple Orchids. I think the length worked in favor of the story because I got PLENTY of character development and it’s one of the things I crave in a read.

There are three parts of the book and each part focuses on the characters at different timeframes. The beginning was my favorite because it was lightest and cutest. Gavin and Baylor meet in college and from there they forge this cute relationship. Gavin is instantly smitten by Baylor and I LOVE it when a Hero chases after the Heroine, it was kind of borderline stalkerish but I lapped that up like a puppy dog.

I love the banter and tension between Gavin and Baylor. The first part of the book really consumed me and I couldn’t put it down. Yes there were cheesy moments, because what 20 year old guy would be so 100% dead set on a girl he barely knows, but the romance reader like myself likes to read stuff like that.

As the characters progress so does the story and it gets a little more serious and a lot of stuff starts happening. I wasn’t sure if this was a good or bad thing. I felt like there were a lot of obstacles thrown at the characters. Sometimes it was over the top silly, but it kind of added something to the story. Maybe a few of those obstacles could have gotten thrown out, but overall, I wasn’t bored with the book.

I liked Purple Orchids and I liked that I tried and gained a new author I can follow. There were elements of the book that needed to be tweaked, but overall, I enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting and I was very satisfied when I finished. ALSO, I liked the balance of steam the author wrote.

This is one of those cases where I feel like I read a different book than everybody else. Not every book is for everyone though, and that's okay! I would still give more of Samantha Christy's work a try in the future. This story just happens to include the perfect storm of things I don't enjoy in a romance.

Oh boy did I like this ALOT... way steamy for YA. I'm 44 and it was very enjoyable.

I loved Gavin! Hell I loved Baylor... hero/heroine so it was a huge plus! I was very turned on, pissed at times, smiled many times, sad at times for many reasons, and most of all~~ wanted to beat the hell out of Karen, the entire story! Baylor's sister, Skylar, which is just in a few parts... I'm sure her book will be great! She was the bouncy younger sassy little sister but the youngest, Piper was mentioned a few times and no doubt she will surface. After all this is the Mitchell Sisters series.

Goes from past to present.
Predictable. Secret baby drama. Blah.
Misunderstanding overload. 7 or 8 years separation because of a lie. All could have been cleared up with a phone call.
Both MCs have sex with other people during separation.
Hero gets married to OW. Heroine has sex with several OM.

I really just need to stop with the Kindle Unlimited romance reads since it seems like 95% of them are terrible. Sad to say I include this one in that 95%. For the life of me, I don't understand how so many of these sorts of books have a 4-star overall rating.

Gavin is a total douche - he's a manwhore of the first degree who then develops some sort of fascination with Baylor when he literally bumps into her while they are in college. He treats other women like disposable holes but instantly feels "protective" over Baylor. To me, this would be a giant red flag to stay the hell away from him. He then proceeds to basically become a creepy stalker. He follows Baylor around so that he can "run into her" outside her classes. He bribes a friend of his to give him her class schedule and he changes his classes to be the same as hers - etc etc. Stalking is *not* romantic and I really wish authors would stop portraying it as so.

As for Baylor, she checks the cliche boxes: virgin, "cool girl" who doesn't wear makeup yet is just so beautiful, likes burgers and fries (none of that salad crap), and even volunteers at a children's hospital.

Then there are lines like this one from Gavin as he watches her drink a milkshake:
Watching her suck chocolate through that straw . . . shit, I’ve never wanted to be a straw so bad in my life.

Insert eyeroll.

I also wish romance authors would stop pitting women against each other and would stop with the "all other women are ho-bitches except the h". Karen, Gavin's lifelong friend, is nothing more than a caricature. She's rich, pretty, wears makeup (gasp!), and wants more from Gavin than friendship and he knows it. She is a stereotypical "mean girl" with no other aspect of personality and towards the end, she totally jumps the shark by

As for the plot, ha. This quote from Gavin sums it up nicely:
“We were played, Baylor. And you’ll never know how sorry I am that I didn’t fight harder for you,” he says. “All it would have taken was a simple phone call or text for us to figure out what happened, and all of this could have been avoided. I’m so sorry, darlin’.

So after each of them decides this is the only person for them (after 3 months, no less) and Gavin tells her he's going to marry her someday, all it takes to break them up is

As for Baylor, she goes to the campus health clinic,

Despite their undying insta-love for each other, neither of them bothers to actually be a grown-up here and talk to the other person. I'm also not buying that Gavin, some big shot film producer, and Baylor, a bestselling novelist with 13 books out, have zero social media presence and have never googled each other or anything. Eight years go by and that's when Gavin sees Baylor at a hotel and finds out

As if this all wasn't silly enough, the author throws in one more "plot point" that is even more ridiculous than the rest. Baylor

When Baylor and Gavin finally get back together, we have this charming little passage full of red-flag possessiveness and slut shaming from a guy who has had more partners than he can count and has had zero contact with Baylor in 8 years:
I’ve been on the pill since [spoiler].” He stiffens. “The pill, huh? So, you do this a lot then?” I try to hold in my giggle. He’s jealous because I’m on the pill. Men. “Well, I wouldn’t say a lot, but it’s happened,” I tell him. A look of pain and regret flash across his face. “Just how many times are we talking about, on a scale from one to say . . . slutty?” This time I can’t hold in my laughter and he gets an eye roll to boot. He’s not laughing. His stare is deadly serious. “How many men have there been, Baylor?” It’s almost adorable how he’s been back in my life for two hours and is already possessive of me.

This is *not* adorable. I would have straight up told him to eff off.

You know when something is going too well, and you know something (or someone) is lurking in the shadows ready to throw kerosene on flame? Then you know the angst and intensity of Samantha Christy’s Purple Orchids, book 1 in the Mitchell Sisters series. I loved the pacing in this book. It practically mirrors the tone and energy of the action, starting smooth and accelerating to a dramatic and heartbreaking climax. Christy creates the perfect storm of heat and heart, developing characters you will love to love, and love to hate. Seamless transitions between the past and present build a solid story steeped in memories the reader lives along with main characters Gavin and Baylor. Christy will rip your heart out, leave you speechless, and then have you hugging your Kindle before the end. Because while the kerosene may be poured by one character, when another one ignites that flame, the result is the outcome every romance reader will cheer for.

You have to love dual POV as it so worth it.

I didn’t expect to love these characters and thanks to this author who is so new to me that I couldn’t not put it down. It’s so worth the five star so thank you for Gavin and Baylor and the tears, the angst and the wtf moments to the years of their unknown to their reality.

Wonderful storyline and fabulous characters. The writing style is so unencumbered by double talk, needless infusions of meaningless sex -- it's so straightforward and easy to sit back and enjoy the ride. Each story in this marvelous series starring a different Mitchell sister with each book is easily read as a standalone, but I wouldn't miss a single installment. A new to me author that I will definitely be keeping an eye on.

OMG I don't know how I missed this book until today. I couldn't put it down once I started to read. It was almost perfect. I would give it 5 stars but I'm a little bit disappointed by their stupid behavior when they were apart and the end is a little bit to cheesy for my opinion.

So freaking beautiful!

This book was awesome! I usually like my romances dark, I rarely do sweet and fluffy. This book was so God damned sweet but it was also almost perfect.

I was really rooting for Baylor and Gavin. They were wonderful together and I just wanted them to be happy.

The twist near the end was a gut punch and for a minute there I was absolutely furious. Samantha Christy, you played me, well done.

The writing was mediocre at best and the melodramatic first person narration ruined the second chance plot line. There were a few good pages despite the authors determination to write a second rate novel.

Beware of Spoilers!

Star Ratings:
Heroine (Baylor): 18/26yrs old – 3/5
Hero (Gavin): 20/28yrs old – 4/5
Plot: 3/5
Grovel: good
Cheating: none
HEA: yes with kid but epilogue should have been more concrete instead of just hinting about a potential pregnancy
Triggers: some OW drama

Average score: 3.5/5

Best Line: “I grew up with a mom who came from a family that tried to dictate her future. She broke free from them and I guess she just raised me to revolt against oppressiveness.”

Worst Line: “I guess it’s an unconscious habit for me now. Watching girls. Picking out my next one-night-stand.”

Personal Review:
This was a good second chance romance, told in two parts, between a movie producer and a writer. I don’t think I will read any more from this author as there were parts which I hated and I have absolutely no interest in reading about the other two sisters.

Random Ramblings
•Another manwhore…great

•I liked how flustered he was around the h when he first met her
•The h’s mum sounded great
•DID NOT appreciate knowing that the H had slept with other virgins
•I can’t believe he was so clueless about Karen
•I was looking forward to some retribution and the H did shed some tears!
•I have to admit, I do judge parents who have a live-in nanny…unless you’re running a successful international company why would you need a nanny?! Especially a live-in one?
•Max made me shed a tear. I always feel for the kids who are in the middle of difficult adult relationships
•This story didn’t need another stalker
•Callie deserved a raise for the way she was with the h
•I loved the h in the first half but grew VERY disappointed in her during part 2

Overall Feeling:

So much drama…

This book is about comparing black book between Gavin and Baylor. I mean both declaring their love to each other. Half of the book is about how Gavin love and infatuation toward Baylor. But on the bed, their insecurity is too much. They both questioning their previous partner. Well Baylor was a virgin. But she has a good friend Chris. Meanwhile Gavin is a man whore.

Miss Christy also done a bad job by making it a big deal that Baylor past sexual experience but it is OK for Gavin to be man whore. Yes I read many books where the hero is a man whore but this book becomes too much by making it right/OK for Hero but not OK for heroine.

Even after Gavin wins Baylor again, Gavin is still insisting knowing how many previous partner Baylor have while they separating. But its OK for Gavin to whore around. And why this plot about sharing information about past sexual partner, becomes part of the story?

I want to like this book. But I just can't

Gavin McBride
Ella me cegó. Me rompió. Me desgarró.

Me recordó a Soraya….

DISCLAIMER TO MY FELLOW GOODREADER
This review is my personal opinion and may contain: spoilers, quotes, rants and swearing.

28 year old Gavin McBride is a rising star in the film industry. He co-owns a production studio and primarily works with his friend/partner and their assistant. Gavin is married to his childhood friend. Their union is not based on love, but mutual convenience of one another. His heart was torn to shreds 8 years ago while he attending UNC. Gavin never expected while on a business trip he would see her face again. Albeit on a flier. It floods his brain with memories. Then the unthinkable happens. 26 year old Baylor Mitchell enters the same elevator in his hotel. There are always two sides to every store. Gavin wants to know why she looks crushed when she was the crusher.

“Be what nobody else can ever be...yourself.”

From the blurb, we know that the hero and heroine are torn apart. The first half of this book is completely in the hero’s POV and primarily in the past. The second half is in the heroine’s POV and in the present as we see them reconnecting. I found I did not like this. I am spoiled with alternating POVs every chapter. I really would have preferred to know what the heroine thought in the past and the hero in the present.

Cliffhanger – no (book #1 of series)

Loved this book!

Baylor and Gavin could have had it all. They fell in love fast but lies tore them apart. Is it something they could overcome?!

So predictable. I don't know why I read it as long as I did. Got to 80% of the book before I knew I had to switch to something new. PASS

5/5 ⭐️ 1.5/10 💧 3/5 🔥

Day 1 book 1 — Started this book anticipating many tears. Not as emotional as I was hoping but I still really enjoyed this book! Second chance romance. Definitely recommend!
