An immersive and tragic walk through a dark period of history. This is the first of the 3 novels written by this author i have read and i wasn’t sure what to expect. Well written and with a hint of Alison Weir in the way historical facts and study is mixed and wound into a truly captivating read. Living in Suffolk certainly added to the story but i’m taking nothing away from the author, this is the best book i’ve read all year!

The notes at the end of the novel are also very interesting to pull the historical context together.

This is the third book I have read by this author and I have found them all fascinating. As a woman the subject of witchcraft trials in the 1600’s makes you shiver as you realise how easily you would have been accused if you had lived at that time. Mumbling or talking to animals would be enough to condemn you. Something I do daily without thinking. The research is good and the books flow well. I look forward to her next book.

Another well written book by L.M. West. I honestly love her books and writing style. The way this book shows the three girls story together and then each through their own eyes. Women we shouldn't forget and the trials they lived through. I can't wait for L.M.'s next book!

An extremely immersive book that is well-written and easy to read. It is clear that the author did an impressive amount of research into the lives of the three main characters, Aubrey, Elizabeth and Priscilla. I felt totally transported to the historical period. This is the second book I have read by L. M West and I am excited to read her next one, the Unnamed!

This was an interesting read. What struck me most of all was the utter humanity of the three friends: from childbed to deathbed; health to sickness; innocence to guilt. Every conceivable emotion was experienced, throughout an enduring friendship which most of us would recognise large parts of today. At many points I found one voice in my head stating how normal they all were - how all of these life events happen today with the same regularity of night following day following night. Then another voice in my head would counter "what IS normal, anyway?" It's a difficult concept, never mind one with any definitive kind of answer.

What is certain is that this story will engross you, please you, anger you and more besides. And so it should; LM West has done a good, credible job with fragments of evidence from a very disturbing part of our history, now long past. Or is it? The earthiness and honesty of her prose will make you check yourself and compare yourself many times over. Again - so it should. We should never forget what happened to so many souls, just as we should take heed against it happening again, in whatever form and for whichever reason. My thanks to the author, for making me think and think hard, whilst providing me with a no-nonsense, believable account which touched my heart and soul deeply.

Dare you follow this journey, learning and relearning; questioning your own place and part? I'd strongly recommend it.

3.5 stars.

This was a clearly well-researched story about witch hunts in the 1600s and I was impressed to read in the authors note that it was based on three real women from Dunwich, of whom the only surviving record is their confessions.

It was a very compelling and disturbing portrayal of the witch hunts, and also things more recognisable to modern readers - namely post-partum depression and psychosis. It was also a story about the power of men and how dangerous it was to be a woman in these times. It isn't surprising that after literal torture so many people confessed to witchcraft just to end it.

I picked this up at the Dunwich museum last year. Dunwich is a really interesting town where barely any of it exists as it did in medieval times due to coastal erosion. I would have liked the setting to play a stronger role in the writing. I also found the writing switched between incredibly immersive and somewhat stilted dialogue. I do think the dialogue was the weakest part, it often didn't read like actual people talking.

However I did enjoy it and it offered an insight into a time that is still salient to feminism today.

Having read the first few books of this series I've enjoyed everyone and each book completed in one sitting. It was nice to read how some of the wrongly accused escaped death even for a few years during this terrible time in our history.. I'd like to think these superstitions are now left far far behind in our history but sadly that's not always the case. But again thoroughly enjoyed these books set in a murderous time in history

I have so enjoyed reading the three books although I found them very harrowing at times. Living in Suffolk I found the history and research interesting and could relate to the places. I feel relived that I was not living in those times - it really must have been terrifying. Thank you LM West and all your historical researchers.

Like the two previous books, ‘We Three’ is written so well you can get a real sense of the time.
Witchcraft is a subject that holds a fascination with me ever since studying it for my history A level, and L M West’s books really bring it to life. Such great stories.
Can’t wait for the next book!
