Bonsai is the ancient Japanese art of dwarfing and shaping trees in small containers to produce miniature versions of mature trees. A single bonsai may only be a foot tall, but looks identical to a full-grown tree in nature. Careful trimming, pruning, wiring, and other techniques are necessary to produce this appearance. Bonsai outlines the constant and proper care that will allow the bonsai to blend with it container in a natural and aesthetically pleasing manner.
I’m an avid fan of Peter Chan’s YouTube channel Herons Bonsai, so I made it a goal to read as many of his books that I could find.
This is a great instruction manual as long as you’re aware of the changes that have happened over the last 30 years, especially in bonsai soil science. Peter will himself tell you to never use peat anymore in your soil mixtures, and reminisce about how peat used to be more in vogue with bonsai.
This book has a great species index and the tool guidance is still spot-on. Bonsai wire was relatively new when this book was released so the instructions aren’t that great, but you’re better off watching a video for that anyway (especially one of Peter’s).
The kindle edition is kind of a mess. It doesn't seem like anyone did layout for the e-version. Not an unreadable mess - just an ordinary mess.
This book is a lot to digest and is probably best read/skimmed and then set aside as a reference. Lots of information in here that won't have to memorize if you keep the book handy.
I watch Peter Chan's YouTube channel and so had the good fortune of hearing his voice in my head for the entire book - which is written in his voice. Very warm and friendly.
Peter Chan is a renowned Bonsai artist. But his perspective and tone regarding these things is very relaxed. He can (and will) tell you everything about bonsai, from its history to its geography. But in the end, all he really seems to want is for you (me) to have fun and not overspend.
this book taught me how to turn branches of trees into new separate little trees! I successfully have new mini trees from huge branches.

A good, brief introduction to the craft and art of Bonsai. Read for personal research. Lots of photos are included with informative captions. I found this work of immense interest and a good supplement for my other Bonsai books. Its contents were helpful and inspiring - number rating relates to the book's contribution to my needs. Overall, this work is also a good resource for the researcher and enthusiast.
A fine book giving a great overview on the care and cultivation of these beautiful plants. It gave enough detailed instructions to convince me that I do not have sufficient interest to grow and take care of a bonsai.
Tons of information! Includes great sections on suitable trees and bonsai styles - the styles chapter has info and pictures that aren’t found in a lot of other bonsai books. The tree photos in this book are not my favorite, but the overall content is solid.
Good overview of bonsai. Not as much practical advice as I had hoped for, but it's probably because Bonsai is an 'art'. It did have good details for the many different types of Bonsai trees though.
