Mists of Fernhaven #1

When Twilight Comes

Rate this book
He'd waited for this day - this woman - for forever it seemed. Harry Ballantine had been a prisoner of Fernhaven forest and now he found the key to his salvation in Jenna Dante. But would she surrender to him before she left the hidden hamlet?

With an angry ex on her tail and rain pouring, the last thing Jenna Dante needed was car trouble and a cranky child. Her only option was to seek refuge in the desolate hotel on the hill in Fernhaven. But the restored walls seemed to hold more than memories. For Jenna they vibrated with life and an all-male seduction she could only see and feel in her mind. But when danger came to call, she would need flesh-and-blood protection - and maybe something more lethal...like transcending love.

Unlike most of the books by B.J. Daniels, this one doesn't have cowboys or take place on a ranch. A departure for her and a great book too. I really loved it.

Jenna married the wrong guy. She finally divorced him and because he is a gangster, and will likely kill her, she takes her daughter and flees. A flood sidetracks her to an new hotel, Fernhaven, built on the site of one that burned in 1936. The place is haunted and one of the ghosts, Harry, is drawn to Jenna. She feels his presence, but is really spooked. Harry feels that Jenna was brought to Fernhaven after 70 years to redeem him. He is right.

I have to say that this book has a lot of interesting characters and could have been twice its' length without much effort at all.

Read for PopSugar prompt #8 A book under 250 pages. (It was also fill prompt 27 A book set at a luxury resort or prompt 28 A book that features an unlikely friendship. If you like exploring haunted hotels you could use it for prompt 33 A book featuring an activity on your bucket list)

It was a fun read. I did enjoy it even though it was highly predictable. I would have enjoyed it more if they had gone into more details about the other ghosts.

Another Good Book

Love the way this woman writes. You don't have to dodge foul words throughout it. States they made love but no down and dirty descriptions. Have read many of her books and still interested in reading more from her.

Jenna is on the run from her crazy ex. She and her daughter wind up at Fernhaven. This place has ghosts. She can sense them. Her daughter can see them. It seems everyone is trying to find her. She unknowningly took something important from her ex.

Geez, where to start with this? B.J. Daniels had a great and intriguing premise with this book. Women stays in haunted hotel because she's on the run from her abusive ex and falls in love with a ghost that haunts the hotel. But it fell so flat, it's not even funny. For starters, the heroine falls in love with the ghost after knowing him probably three days and vice versa. Now I do believe it is possible to fall in love with somebody and know he or she is the one after a very short amount of time. But c'mon, we're talking about a ghost here, not even a real guy. And as for the romance. It's more like, what romance? She introduces multiple and in my opinion unneeded characters, and switches to the various points of view of these characters. In my opinion, she could have gotten rid of 2 maybe 3 of those characters, and used the pages that where in their point of view to instead further the romance between the two leads. And as for the ending.... It sucked. I probably could've forgiven this book its failing points, if the ending was good. But it wasn't. It ends

First off the story was thrilling to the point that I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting. The cover art is also sooo haunting and fantastic, just how I imagined the hotel looking like. BUT, I completely agree with the other review! There were so many un-needed characters! *spoiler* I could, like the other reader, believe she fell in love with the ghost but I couldn't understand why the heck the story didn't revolve around that. The few encounters they did have the ghost kept trying to tell her who he was but never anything about his past. The end was so frustrating. This book could have been sooooo good (reminded me somewhat of Kissed by an Angel) but the ghost helped save her life in the end only to find his way out of limbo? But what happened to all the other ghosts that were living in the hotel? Then some other character comes out of no where and she just rides off into the sunset with him?! At the end of the book I just kept thinking wth? Was it worth reading? yes. Will I read it again? no.

Okay.

That was... weird. I don't even know if I liked it or if I didn't. The characters were so... generic. The only moment I was even partially surprised was when the nature of certain characters were revealed. Once their roles were explained, they acted just as expected. Some plot points were oh-so convenient, even if highly unlikely, but it was readable.

Also, a small edition slip: Charlene is first mentioned as Stan's sister then as his wife. Maybe somebody should have noticed that, yes?

I actually finished this book quite a while ago. It is very different from Daniels' usual cowboy mysteries (which I enjoy far too much for my own good, lol. Still, it is a very good read, and I really need to read the second book in this series.

A good read over two timelines. I found this book easy to read and a great page turner. Was disappointed at the ending but it did leave you wondering.
