Lourie's glasnost-era novel is rather difficult to categorise outside of the generic 'political satire.' Docked one star only for the rather tedious sexism (the only two female characters who receive more than a sentence or two of dialogue, only appear briefly and are there for the main protagonist to have sex with), and its mix of Jewish jokes and white middle-class poesy might make it difficult to market, but the novel is quite funny.
