The Star Lord waited, poised for her maiden voyage. The gigantic silvery spindle, still cradled in its scaffoldings, towered upwards against the artificial sky of Satellite Y. The Star Lord was the perfection of modern space craft, the creation of the earth's most skilled designers and builders, the largest ship ever launched. Protected by every safety device the ingenuity of man had been able to contrive, she was a palace to glide among the stars. She was also doomed, after the fashion of the legendary Titanic -- and for similar reasons.
"Women and children first," he repeated, again and again. "Women and children first!"
Where have you heard that cry before? That's right, this fairly entertaining Golden Age sci-fi story could be simply summarized as the Titanic in space.
Instead of an iceberg though, the eponymous pleasure ship comes a cropper due to Thakura's Ripples, 'an analogous band of mysterious forces existing in hyperspace' which overheat the vessel while the unsuspecting crew dance and romance as the orchestra plays.
Ellanby has a little fun first by piling up the unfavourable portents which precede the maiden voyage of The Star Lord, then through dishing out some just deserts to a selfish and influential passenger who takes the alternative view that it's everyman for himself.
I enjoyed this story. The plot was engaging, but the characters truly made the story shine. You could feel real affection for some characters and true disdain for others. I would recommend this story for anyone that enjoys a good story. It is not just for those that enjoy science fiction.
