Cai isn’t quite ready to grow up, which is why he quits school and winds up dragged in the wake of his sister, a Habitat Partner, as she looks into an avalanche that has stopped the Death Caravans that feed the isolated Sabertooths. Or he is until he falls from an airship and winds up stranded among them. Now he and his new friend Redstripe must stop a sabertooth who doesn’t want to follow the Oath of Peace, and somehow save the Sabertooths in the process. Good read. A bildungsroman.

I liked the exploration of a different environment and also a different types of creatures. The saber tooth tigers were pretty cool and I do like how they explain why we do not see them or woolly mammoths in the other books. However, I kind of do not like that the main character really does not do much and but I do like his relationship between him and the cats.

I've always loved how these stories give young ones the responsibility and freedom they need to become good people.

Such a fun ride! Just like it was the first few times I read this back in elementary school. 🙂 some of the people make me angry. You’ll know what I mean if you read it.

Dinotopia: Sabertooth Mountain is the 5th book in a series of books based off the original picture book, Dinotopia. It is about a boy who ,after deciding to drop out of school, must go on a journey to see his parents. When he finally boards the Sky Galley to see his parents, he is thrown off the ship during a storm high in the Forbidden Mountains of Dinotopia(he lands on snow, so he doesn't die). When he feels himself being dug up he thinks it is help, but then realizes that the only thing his savior could possibly be is a sabertooth tiger! When he is finally dug up, he finds out that the sabertooths are intelligent and that a large avalanche has covered the trail in which their food is brought to them (long ago, the sabertooths made an oath of peace, saying that they wouldn't hunt. Their food is brought to them by death caravans, which transport dying and dead animals to them). They are starving, and some of the sabertoooths are considering taking up hunting again. The boy must team up with the leader of the pride, Redstripe, and find a solution. They go on a quest to reach a city to tell them of the sabertooths' dilema, but are closely trailed by a pack of rouge sabertooths, driven insane by hunger. When Redstripe and the boy cross trails with the rouge pack, their is an epic battle. just when it seems like all is lost, the Sky Galley floats by and drops a huge load of fish. It does not take long for the big kitties to find out that they love this new meal, and peace is restored to the Forbidden Mountains.

The part that I liked most about this book is that the sabertooths are intelligent, not just mindless killers. They know the dinotopian foot writing, and they have a large chambre where the different prides meet. The whole cavern is lit by luminescent stones. Anther thing that I liked was how much the sabertooths liked fish. I found that funny. One thing I didn't like about this book is that the boy was almost never pleased with what he had. But he did learn along his journey that he should be happy with what he has. I Guess anyone who had to live with sabertoothed tigers would learn that lesson, though.

This is Luke's review (Momma did not read this one):

I loved this book because its about a 13 year old boy who becomes part of a Sabertooth family, and it was exciting from start to finish.
My favorite part of the book was when his sister saved him from a pack of wolves.
I can't wait to read more Dinotopia books!!!

Sean really enjoyed this and it was an easy read. Cai, a boy of 13, meets up with some hungry sabretooth tigers and helps them to restore the bond between the species. There's a villainous sabretooth in here, a mad bear and other adventures to keep the young reader's attention.

This was my favorite out of the first 6 children's Dinotopia books. Great book, suspense, good plot, attention to detail. It is a short and pleasant read. Anyone of any age can enjoy this book even if you do not know anything about the Dinotopia series.
