Lorato: A Conservation Story for Kids

Rate this book
Lorato depicts a story of a young calf in an African Savanna herd. She faces the hardships of growing up in the wild Kalahari desert. Three valuable elephant lessons are taught within the book. Lorato is thus able to navigate the harsh realities of nature, people, and animals. The lessons draw upon real local ecological elephant knowledge from African villages, in rural Botswana. This unromanticized story follows the adventures of Lorato and her will to find her way back to her elephant herd. This environmental education resource and fictional story allows children to escape the idealized version of wildlife, and dive into the more substantive reality of wild animals. Preserving animals-specifically elephants-is fostered in this story as readers become attached to the notion that animals and humans are not two separate entities. With this thought in mind, young minds can grow up in a world where the juxtaposition of humans and wildlife are at the forefront of coexistence. This story explores the importance of local ecological knowledge transmission and the importance of continuing these practices for elephant population longevity. 50% of book sale proceeds fund elephant conservation initiatives in rural Botswana.
