I do enjoy a new Lee Child novel, but I also have a soft spot for Diane Capri’s Hunt for Reacher books. Capri tells a stellar story, usually paralleling themes of one of Child’s novels as it relates to the nomad’s journeys. With the FBI seeking to interview Reacher, Special Agent Kim Otto has been chasing him and always ends up one step too far behind. With a handful of military vets dead, their end appears suspicious. One has a connection to Reacher, making this an even more intriguing set of crimes. Could Reacher be involved, trying to silence people from a past mission.? Capri delves deeper and offers a great story to keep the reader on their toes.
After the discovery of four military veterans, there appears to be someone working to silence them. Jack Reacher, ever-elusive, has a connection to at least one of them, making these deaths seem all the more suspicious. One of the victim’s wives pushes the military to investigate and find her husband’s killer. Many are unsure if they want this hot potato, but one member of the Army, Jake Reacher, is eager to help find answers and potentially clear his uncle’s name.
When Special Agent Kim Otto hears that the elder Reacher could be involved in these deaths she gets permission from her FBI superiors to work the case in hopes of finding the man she is tasked with locating. Working with young Jake Reacher, Special Agent Otto begins asking the questions that no one has yet been able to answer. Trouble is, there appears to be no answers that anyone can provide. This includes Special Agent Otto’s past partner, Carlos Gaspar. This gritty former fed adds another level to the investigation, allowing Gaspar to forge into areas that others prefer not to handle.
As the investigation moves forward, there appears to be a group who want nothing more than to neutralise these military officers who could have access to a secret. A conspiracy is building and no one seems able to point to any single person in charge of the hits. Still, Otto and the young Reacher will not stop at anything until the truth is revealed. All while Jack Reacher remains in the shadows and one step ahead of any attempted interaction.
I quite enjoy this series and all that in entails. Working with Reacher facts to complement the narrative, Capri adds impactful ideas while peppering them with exciting twist to keep the reader engaged. The story begins with a great deal of drama and builds as the chapters speed along. The reader cannot help but want to know more as they devour the easy-to-digest story that never loses its way.
Character development is ongoing and proves essential once more in this novel. While Reacher remains outside the central story, his presence is felt throughout the piece and the hunt to locate him proves essential to getting answers. Kim Otto remains at the centre of the story with a little backstory and some forward development keeping the reader in the middle of the mix. While Carlos Gaspar has moved into a secondary role, his presence remains entertaining and pushes the story along. Little of his own story emerges, but what little. there is allows the reader to catch up with his retried lifestyle. One-off characters are also quite reflective, as is the emergence of Jake Reacher, leaving the story open for more appearances as the series progresses.
The plot twists proved effective and kept the story as edgy as possible,. Capri weaves together action and story arc development through these twists, also keeping the Reacher angle as part of the larger story. They’re is little that happens which does not involve Jack Reacher, though it is not repetitive from the Lee Child novels. Capri has a strong connection to the nomadic protagonist, but is able to shape her own views of him through her strong writing and poignant commentary. I am eager to see where things are headed and how Capri will keep working alongside Lee Child to create stellar novels.
Kudos,. Madam Capri, for another strong Reacher-esque novel with Kim Otto in the driver’s seat.
Jake Reacher is helping Otto Kim solve some murders in Bet on Jack by Diane Capri. Yes I spelled it correct. It's Jake not Jack, he is the son of Jacks brother and has recently started his time in the army. In this book agent Kim is taken from her hunt for Reacher and is tasked with solving the murder of at least four ex service women. Don't worry Gaspar is involved as well. Capri has created a wonderful world of characters close to Lee Childs world of Reacher.
Oh my gosh, it’s no wonder Agent Kim lives on antacids! I honestly don’t know how she keeps up the search for Reacher. It certainly puts her in dangerous situations, without much in the way of backup from the big boss. But she’s determined to finish the job!
This is a wonderful read that you won’t want to put down until you, like Kim, finish the job. I received an ARC copy for my honest review.
My first book checked out of the Orlando Public Library. I’m all caught up on the Hunt for Reacher. Otto still doesn’t have a partner except Gaspar’s remote assistance. Jake Reacher gets a short assignment to help a veteran’s spouse in Hope and Despair.
This next novel in the series is incredible. Each one I read I think is the best; then I read the next one. All I can say is that you will love this book if you enjoy mystery, intrigue, evil intentions, crazy action, and three to four stories going at the same time; all with incredible twists and turns that run you in different directions - all seeming to circle around Jack Reacher at the center. If you are a Reacher fan, you will recognize places, activities, and some characters from the Jack Reacher novel which this author references at the very beginning. If you are a Kim Otto fan, you will recognize characters who have worked with Otto in other FBI assignments. All of the referenced stories are thoroughly enjoyable and extremely entertaining. This time, when her FBI boss, Cooper, contacts Otto for her next assignment, he directs her to join a task force investigating the seemingly random murders of homeless, female veterans in different states and different branches of the military. Since Kim has been tasked with Cooper’s (as she believes personal) search for Jack Reacher over the last 8 months, she has a suspicion that somehow, somewhere, Cooper knows that Reacher is connected to the murders and/or the victims. As usual, he provides no clues other than the current case files put together so far by the task force. She just has to figure it out. While the task force is operating, at the same time, a severely disabled vet starting to come out of a years’ long coma suddenly dies. Since it is thought to be a cardiac arrest, the military closes the case with no investigation. His wife, Samantha Vaughn, a police officer, who knew Reacher in the past, believes that her husband was murdered and will not rest until the murderer is found. She links up with Reacher’s nephew, Jake Reacher, for help. Hitting a dead-end, Jake reaches out to Otto to see if she can assist him and Vaughn figure out what is going on. We also have a company of ex-military who seem to be responsible for black OPS tasks, and may be connected to bad acts in and after war, and also currently around the world. In fact, one of them may be an assassin personally employed by one or more top government officials. With the help of Otto’s former partner, Gaspar, she, Jake, and Vaughn begin to merge all the events and clues. Are they all connected? How is this possible? Who is responsible? As usual, Otto suspects that she is again involved in a Cooper conspiracy way over her pay grade. I highly recommend this book and really look forward to what comes next. I do have to say....if you are a fan of this series, you are going to be horrified, but not really surprised, what you find out near the end. We may want to start worrying about Otto’s safety. I was fortunate to receive an ARC and am thrilled to leave my honest review of this wonderful story.
This book is another good read in the Hunt for Jack Reacher Series. Over the last few years I have read all of the Jack Reacher stories and all of the Hunt for Jack Reacher stories as well. This will be the 55th. It is a good read. But it feels like more of stretch than some of the others. The next in this series have already been announced.
First, I read the 29 Jack Reacher Novels and short stories by Lee Child, and now Lee and Andrew Child. And then I read all the books in this series. This is the seventeenth novel in the Hunt for Reacher Series, and the twentieth story featuring Otto. Otto still does not have a replacement partner on this assignment. She has been added to a taskforce looking at murdered female Vets. But as usual Cooper has her working the case for other reasons. She ends up teaming up with Jake Reacher and recently widowed Samantha Vaughan.
Otto has Gaspar in the wings helping out as much as he can. He does not trust Finlay or Cooper but is helping Otto. He even makes a trip to check something out on the ground. It ends up being a turning point in the story. The source book for this volume was Lee Child’s Nothing to Lose. The description of this volume is:
“Four military veterans are dead. One was under Jack Reacher’s protection. Were they murdered?
One Gold Star wife implores the Army to help find her husband’s killer. A request Jake Reacher’s CO can’t refuse.
The unraveling begins and every answer Jake and FBI Special Agent Kim Otto find spawns more shocking questions.
With few allies and too many enemies, they slam into a terrifying conspiracy. Ruthless men with everything to gain. And one woman with nothing to lose.”
The cast of characters in this story is:
Kim Otto Carlos Gaspar Charles Cooper Jake Reacher Samantha Vaughan Maureen Tolliver Jeffrey Willard and Jack Reacher
The quote from Nothing to Lose that start this story off is:
““My conscience is already clear,” Reacher said. “If people leave me alone, I leave them alone. If they don’t, what comes at them is their problem.”
Vaughan said, “You see something you don’t like, you feel you have to tear it down?”
“Damn right I do. You got a problem with that?”
“No.””
It was great to see Jake Reacher play a key role in this story. I really love how Capri is developing his character. Vaughan was written in a weird way, at time strong, confident, and sure, at others she appeared very wishy washy. I do not feel that Capri captured this Character the was Child did in the original story. Otto is her normal self in this one, but seems a little less stressed and frazzled. Overall a good story with an interesting plot, great characters. But it leaves you wondering what Reacher is up to back in Despair Colorado.
Currently the Child brothers are releasing about 1 Reacher novel a year, and Capri is publishing 2 in this series. This one released a week after the later offering from the main series. This story is a little slower than some others and has a significantly lower body count, at least as a result of Reacher or Otto. It is another good story in an excellent series. These books always leave you desperate for the next instalment in the series. Capri has again done a great job in leading us on the hunt for Jack Reacher. And with each offering we get to know both Otto and Reacher better. I hope we continue to encounter Jake Reacher more often, he was a highlight in this offering.
BET ON JACK is the best “Hunt for Reacher” novel yet! At the heart of this story is revenge. Someone is killing people for whom no logical reason presents itself. The only connecting thread: they are all female and all former active military. Except for one, the one with a known Reacher connection. No surprise to find FBI Special Agent Kim Otto surrounded by danger, gunfire, and explosions as she continues her search for Reacher. The surprise comes in how much author Diane Capri allows us to “peek behind the curtain,” so to speak. Shadowy figures are dragged into the light, conspiracies are discovered, new mysteries are introduced, and, somehow, Reacher is the key to it all. I keep saying these are the best thrillers being written. And I keep thinking the one I’m currently reading is the best ever. I don’t know how Capri does it, but somehow, each superb outing tops the previous one. Read them all!
Being a Colorado resident, I was disappointed at the lack of creativity at embellishing fictional places. The 'house' that Vaughn was in, faaar too restricted to allow the access the story creates, for both characters who visited. The roads described in telling the drive one had to take to get there don't exist either. The two cities depicted? Nothing like that would happen anywhere in the United States, even as divided as the nation has become.
Makes for somewhat good story-telling (and is easy to script to play into the plot) however makes even a novel a bit too much of an escape from reality.
Cooper is an asshole, tho. Make no bones about that. Gaspar is right to call Otto an idiot for still believing in him, however, because of her career aspirations- unreal as they are- she has to.
Diane Capri’s “Bet On Jack” is an interesting read though a little rough at times. Ex-military females are being murdered & dumped in remote locations to obscure connections between the victims. Special Agent Kim Otto is assigned to a task force assembled to locate the murderer code named Hornet. Jake Reacher, in officer training school, is ordered to assist a Gold Star wife, a sheriff in Hope, CO, to uncover the murderer of her husband who was recovering from an IED explosion on a mission on a “safe road”. His entire team is killed. In a previous Reacher tale, Jack had helped destroy a polluting recycling plant in the neighboring town Despair CO. An off the books paramilitary group is now set up outside of Despair. Jack Reacher is not pleased about this. The tale lacks continuity at times and has a political side story that’s unresolved. 3.5 stars.
Between them Lee Child and Diane Capri, Queen of the Mystery-Thriller, keep Jack Reacher alive and as elusive as ever between them, as in Bet On Jack, which homages Child's Nothing To Lose.
FBI Special Agent Kim Otto is assigned to investigate the assumed murder of three veteran female heroin addicts who were members of different Army units ... what's the connection? Later, Otto joins with Reacher's nephew Jake, when he and Samantha Vaughan hunt down the serial killer, of more vets (including her husband), as police deem the latter a natural death. Why is Otto's shadowy boss Cooper running interference - and how is Jack Reacher involved?
To find out, get your copy of Diane Capri's unputdownable Bet On Jack for a thriller that will keep you up all night!
FBI Special Agent Kim Otto has been assigned to a Task Force by her boss, Charles Cooper. It felt to Otto out of the ordinary since on the surface it seemed not related to her primary assignment – find Jack Reacher. But as the story unfolds, we learn it has everything to do with Reacher. Capri uses the assignment to add a new sub-plot to the on going search. It is, at times, a bizarre story line, It means the reader must pay close attention to all the details. It caught me off guard and I had to back track and read the story more slowly and cautiously. But it’s worth the effort as Diane Capri delivers another great, captivating story. By the way the source book NOTHING TO LOOSE by Lee Child was a good decision for me.
Every time a new chapter is added to Kim Otto's life, her perspective on her job changes! Bet on Jack is definitely a redirection with all the supporting cast affected and effective in what is changing. I love where she is apparently leaning toward and where that might take her and all of us next. She is definitely building her support group and listening to her instincts quicker. It adds an anticipation for what is to come as she deals with an insight into Cooper that she needs to ponder. Diane is expanding this adventure exponentially. Can't wait for the next one...thanks for this one!!
Kim Otto has another adventure at the whim of her shadowy boss, and connects with Jake Reacher and a cop from Jack Reacher’s past. These are all very likable characters and I enjoy reading reading about them. But I still don’t love how the author magically conjures Jack Reacher’s involvement and provides no rationale for why Cooper is expending such a ridiculous amount of resources to find him. I’ll continue to read this series, but it needs to be resolved at some point so the author can focus on other books/ characters that don’t take liberties with beloved characters created by better authors.
This next installment in the hunt for Reacher prominently features his nephew Jake Reacher, who is the next best thing to Jack himself. You can tell he embodies the same moral code as well as physicality, which is a plus as far as it moves the story along. Lots of action, intrigue as usual, Otto has her hands full trying to figure out Coopers angle all the while looking for Jack while fighting to stay alive long enough to solve the mystery of the murdered military veterans. Caffeinate and carry on!
As always another great chapter in the Otto, Gasped series. Getting Jake Reacher involved is unquestionably perfect for Otto . She can touch base with Jake if any issues with Reacher come up . I agree with Gaspar Cooper is slime. He has no respect for Otto. Otto helped Vaughn uncover what happened to her husband with the Boxer group which Cooper is behind. Can't for next chapter. 10 stars plus!!!! Thanks, Carl Clause
The heavens above have once again blessed Diane. She has blended in Jack Reacher's nephew Jake into this novel so wonderful with Kim Otto that they seem to be just the match that was needed to excel this great novel. She even has Casper back helping all the way. Lee Child must be very proud on how Diane has portrayed Jake and Jack. Keep up the great work and just biting on the bit for your new novel coming out next year "Jack On A Wire".
Very tense, lots of action all the time. Luckily, since I've read all the previous books, I was able to keep the cast of characters in order. The old names, some new ones... and some finally wiped off the map. I'm glad Gaspar is kept in the action - the author's most sympathetic person, always brings a sense of steadiness to this tumultuous story.
This is another example of Diane Capri's excellent writing. This book just kinda grabs you right into the story and doesn't let you go tell the story is done. However....I do not like "series" and this book again leaves so much undone for the next installment. I'm not sure if I will dontinue to read these episodes but I enjoyed it very much until the last paragraph. Just my opinion.
The novel contains something for everyone. Jake Reacher is back and plays a prominent role in the story. It is filled with a lot of twists and turns including a hidden vault. Even our old friend, Gaspar, actually sees some physical action. It is highly enjoyable read.
Eh. Not one of the best, but I enjoyed Jake Reacher. Work was crazy, but I also really couldn't get into it. There were way too many plots going on here and it seemed rushed. Is it bad that I'm rooting for Kim Otto to eventually get in trouble that she can't be bailed out of.
I'm really enjoying the Diane Capri series searching for Jack Reacher. This book just keeps it all moving along. Another great read. Thanks to both Lee for Jack and Diane for Kim Otto.
Another interesting story from Diane in the reacher search. Bringing in more contacts from reacher books. Getting nearer, possibly, of why the hunt for teacher is being undertaken.
The usual high quality is not here. The climax did not happened. All very simple and predictable. Unlike the other 19 that I've enjoyed. It seemed rushed and forced.
What another awesome story. This time, Kim is searching for Reacher. Will she realize that she’s in more danger than she’s ever been in. Suspenseful all the way to the end.
Riveting story! This is the first book by Diane Capri I have read and I couldn’t put it. I love the way she introduces the characters, and was so enthralled, I could not wait to read it each day.
A disabled vet is murdered in a grubby, remote, nearly abandoned care facility outside of Colorado Springs. One of the last things he hears from his murderer is, “We’ve been worried about you.” Who is the "we"? And why take the life of a severely handicapped soldier? The vet’s cause of death is officially heart failure. His wife, who once knew Jack Reacher, doesn’t believe that for a moment. She has questions and, unable to locate Reacher, she does the next best thing: finds Reacher’s nephew, Jake.
Meanwhile, Kim Otto is sent to help investigate a series of mysterious deaths among retired, homeless, female veterans. Kim’s boss, the enigmatic Cooper, is short on explanations as to what this case may have to do with Kim’s all-consuming assignment for the last eight months, to locate Jack Reacher. Kim’s frustration and distrust of Cooper are beginning to show. Why does he insist on keeping her on? Why does Cooper seem to hamstring Otto even as he demands action and answers? Why does Cooper even want Reacher? Kim gets more suspicious of Cooper and sees more virtue in Reacher with the turn of each page. She’s doing what any good investigator would do: getting into the head of her quarry. But she’s getting into the head of Cooper as well.
What does Otto’s current assignment have to do with Samantha Vaughn’s husband? Unable to locate Jack, what can a young and inexperienced Jake do to help right a wrong? Does he have the same motivations, resourcefulness, and heart as his uncle? Diane masterfully crafts an edge-of-your-seat scenario in which disaster lurks around every corner. Every connection is incredibly fragile. Will it all fall apart, leaving Otto even more frustrated, Samantha’s questions unanswered, and Jake reeling so early in his career in the military?
The familiar cast is here: Gaspar, Kim’s friend and guardian angel from afar. Jake Reacher is a huge and welcome presence. Samantha Vaughn shows up from the Reacher series. Diane’s characters are maturing with relationships that remain engrossing and plots that are refreshingly complicated yet ones that progress believably and seamlessly.
It’s fascinating to see Diane try her hand at Reacher-style action with nephew Jake, who is something of a younger, less-experienced Jack Reacher. She pulls it off admirably well! The action is engaging, and the suspense continues to build through each chapter and throughout the series. Here’s the good news. After 21 books, this series remains as exciting and fresh as it was when it was new. Now, we are invested in the characters’ lives and the plotlines, both immediate and overarching. Capri keeps things moving forward, maintains the suspense, and leaves the reader hungry for the next installment.
I received a prepublication copy of “Bet on Jack” in return for my honest review. I am a big fan of Lee and Andrew Child. I’m becoming an even bigger fan of Diane Capri.
I’ve read all the books in this series and this one is the best so far. You don’t have to have read the series to enjoy this book; it can also be read as a stand-alone. Kim Otto works for the FBI and has been tasked to locate Jack Reacher but has not been able to do so yet. She has no official partner as her former partner Carlos Gaspar has retired. She is still in contact with him, and he is a valuable asset to her. In this book, Otto has been tasked with a case of murdered homeless veterans, all of them in different states. She has a suspicion that this must be connected to Reacher in some way but needs to find the connection. She is sent to check with the wife of a recently deceased veteran who feels that her husband was murdered. In the meantime, Jake Reacher (current Army and Jack’s nephew) has also been tasked to check on the same woman. The three of them join to put the missing pieces together. There are lots of twists and turns. Think black ops, criminal military members and lots of action. You will not regret reading this book and you probably won’t be able to put it down!
