Detective Mike Malone anxiously awaits his retirement from the NYPD. When a Congresswoman's mother falls victim to a serial killer's rampage, Malone is surprised at his own resurgence when his adversarial captain, who often refers to Mike as everything but a detective, places him at the helm of the investigation. The calculating killer leaves only a solitary clue behind, and Mike's memories of the psychopath he brought to justice decades before begin to haunt him. Ray Hollister, a one-time wonder, questions the authenticity of his current novel, shamefully aware his prior bestseller bordered on plagiarism. When his girlfriend, Gabriele, leaves him, he survives the emotional tailspin only because he is certain he can win her back. When Ray suspects she has not only been tampering with his work but also committing the horrendous crimes precisely as depicted on paper, he decides to disclose the information to Detective Malone. Energized, now that he at least has a suspect, Malone weans himself off alcohol and painfully welcomes his new female partner, FBI Agent, Lori Galloway. Daunted by his previous partner's near-fatal injuries and surprised at his ability to again experience a romantic connection, his apprehension builds surrounding his partner's safety. Together they scour the city for the elusive Gabriele, but the predator is always one-step and one-kill ahead of them. Will Detective Malone find the killer in time to save Ray, Ray's psychiatrist or his agent? Will his long-awaited romance survive the chaos?

Exceptionally well written..."
Midwest Book Review

Acquiring an early appreciation of prose written by Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, and the audacious Stephen King, Woodling chose to follow in their intimidating footsteps, evidenced by The Immortal Twin (CamCat Books 2020) and The Immortal Detective, released by CamCat Books, March 2023. Despite a distracting clowder of black cats and a playlist that often strikes an ominous chord, she is hard at work on the third book in the series.
