which one was free, i wonder..
spinoza thought and the more he thought, the more he lost of himself: his family, his community, his security, the door to the world he had once belonged to. rosenberg thought too, yet the more he thought, the less he relinquished; instead, everything he believed grew a little more firmly rooted.
so thinking wasn't the same thing. one allowed his questions to change him, while the other forced his questions to change shape so that he could preserve his answers. spinoza walked without knowing where the truth would lead him. rosenberg, meanwhile, had chosen his destination from the very first step, turning every thought he encountered into another path that would take him there.
perhaps encountering a thought didn't mean reading it or carrying it in one’s mind for years. the true encounter began where a person accepted that their own beliefs might not survive it.
the contradiction rosenberg faced was goethe’s admiration for spinoza. an admiration he couldn't fit into the worldview he believed to be flawless and unchanging. perhaps there were two paths before him: he could either look again at the answers that had kept him secure for years, or reshape the thought before him into something that would change nothing.
he chose the second path. he seemed to come close to understanding spinoza, yet each time he found another explanation that led him back to the conclusion he had already reached. the question remained in his mind but never turned back towards him; the number of his thoughts increased, while the boundaries of his thinking remained the same.
for spinoza, however, once a question had been asked, the world didn't return to its former place. he looked at the same texts but no longer saw the same words; he heard the prayers he had listened to since childhood but could no longer stand within them as he once had.
could a person learn not to see a contradiction once they had seen it? could they forget what they knew, call their mind back to its former shape simply to go on belonging?
he couldn't. perhaps not because he was always courageous, but because once he had been honest with himself, he could no longer carry his old certainties as though he still believed in them. thought didn't immediately give him a new world. first, it made him unable to go on living within the world he knew. was this how certain ideas changed a person, i wonder; not by telling them what to think, but by showing them what they could no longer believe as they once had?
so what could thought do on its own?
it could come as far as the door and perhaps wait there for years. a person could know its name, read its books, memorise its sentences, even devote an entire lifetime to solving it and still never invite it inside. because opening the door also meant accepting that everything which had stood securely in its place for years might change.
spinoza opened that door a little wider with every question. rosenberg looked through the gap, made what he saw resemble his own world and then closed the door again.
then i thought of the books. spinoza’s books, taken down from their shelves, transported, classified. did holding a thought in one’s hands bring one any closer to it? a person could touch the paper, turn the pages, record its name in a catalogue of their possessions.
but thought would not remain where it was held.
there was an invisible distance, then, between knowing and becoming. a person could grow through learning, yet remain exactly where they were as long as they gave up nothing of themselves. knowledge didn't always expand the boundaries of the mind; sometimes it helped the mind defend those boundaries more skilfully.
but did a person truly choose their own thoughts?
according to spinoza, we often believed ourselves free, mistaking our desires for our own will because we didn't know the causes that moved us. how easy it was to believe there were no strings at all when we couldn't see where they began.
perhaps the greatest obstacle to truth wasn't ignorance but the need for certainty. for a person who admitted what they didn't know could still ask questions, while someone who believed they knew everything had nowhere left to go. instead of illuminating the mind, the answer became a boundary that closed it off from the outside.
perhaps thinking, too, needed an ethics of its own. an ethics concerned not only with reaching the correct conclusion, but with what one did with the truth that appeared before them. a person could use knowledge to test themselves, or to protect themselves from every possible test.
the same mind could be both a window and a wall; reason could lead a person out of their delusions, but it could also help them defend those delusions more skilfully. perhaps freedom didn't mean being governed by no causes at all, but being able to look at the causes that governed us and remain open enough to relinquish our certainty before them.
in placing spinoza and rosenberg side by side, yalom wasn't merely comparing two different minds. he was quietly turning the question towards the reader as well: was i truly listening to a thought that appeared before me, or was i placing it among everything i already knew and rendering it harmless?
because the certainties that closed a person off didn't live only within grand ideologies. any of us could reshape our questions in order to protect what we believed.

çünkü insanın kendisini kapatan kesinlikler yalnızca büyük ideolojilerin içinde yaşamıyordu. her birimiz, inandıklarımızı korumak uğruna soruların biçimini değiştirebilirdik.
