Splat can't wait to try out his brand-new roller skates! But when it starts to rain, will Splat's fun day be ruined Beginning readers will love the wordplay in this Splat story.
Rob Scotton is the bestselling author and illustrator of "Russell the Sheep," and "Russell and the Lost Treasure." His latest book, "Splat the Cat" is the story of a young cat facing all the wonders and worries of his first day at cat school. Rob's work can also be found on greeting cards, ceramics, textiles, prints, stationery, and glassware. An honors graduate of Leicester Polytechnic, Rob now lives in Rutland, England, with his wife, Liz, who is also an artist.
A. It has Splat! B. Splat has the coolest color of roller skates, imaginable! (According to the girls)! C. It is raining and raining and raining!
What the girls and I dislike about the story!
A. Splat keeps making a mess throughout the entire house! B. He keeps complaining about the rain! C. His sister makes frosted fish sticks! FROSTED?? Really???
Not a bad early reader. In fact, I'll bet kids would enjoy it. I, however, as an extremely boring adult-type, could not get over the grossness factor when they were talking about frosted fish sticks. I'm sorry, but fish sticks and frosting? Gag! The rest of the story was cute enough, but the ending seemed rather abrupt.
Splat the Cat is having a rough day because of the rain.
This story makes as much use of the -ai- in words as possible to teach that vowel combination to new readers. The story is a little silly, but very relatable to anyone who has ever had their plans or desires thwarted by rain.
I think Splat the Cat books are a blast! The illustrations are hilarious and I'll bet cats would LOVE frosted fish sticks (and kids would love reading about said frosted fish sticks - gross out factors with kids are a hit).
Splat the Cat was excited to go outside to enjoy his new rollerskates. Soon it went from sunny to rainy so Splat went inside where he quickly made a mess and caused problems for the whole family. Funny story with a funny happy ending.
What fun is it to have new purple skates if the rain moves in and leaves you stuck inside. Super fun, except I will not be eating frosted fish sticks any time soon. Yuck!
Splat the Cat roller skates indoors after it begins to rain.
This early reader teaches words ending in “-ain.” The 12 words in the -ain sound family found in this book are listed on the inside front cover.
Although it is designated as a Level 1 beginning reader, this book is longer and wordier with more complex sentence structures than most Level 1 beginning readers.
Hsu, L. A., Scotton, R., & Eberz, R. (2012). Splat the Cat: The rain is a pain. New York, NY: Harper.
Splat the cat can't wait to try out his new roller skates. However, while outside, it starts to rain and he is forced to go inside. once he goes inside, Splat has all kinds of adventures including frosting fish sticks!
This book is designed for beginning readers who have mastered the short vowel sounds and are now moving to the long vowel sounds (approximately 5-6 years old). This story introduces words with the "-ain" sound such as rain, train, etc. Due to the limited vocabulary, it is a great confidence builder for emerging readers. The illustrations are fun, bold, and accentuate the text. Splat is a very enjoyable character and reminds me of busy, always mobile 5-6 year olds. Young children will find this book funny.
This is a "Beginning 1 Reader" (simple sentences for eager new readers) for ages 4 - 8.
Excerpt from the book: "Splat couldn't wait to spend a whole day in his brand-new skates. It was a sunny day. There was one plain little cloud in the sky, but it looked far away. Splat jumped, spun and flipped, and the cloud got bigger. It got closer. It got darker."
Splat just wants to try out his new skates but the weather goes from clear skies to a rainy day. Splat hates the rain so he decides to use his skates inside the house, much to the dislike of everyone else in his family. Splat is constantly running into trouble. This book does have a happy ending though and I liked the rhyming words.
Splattiness rules!!!!! Splat the Cat wants t try some roller blading, and has the moves--and the padding---to prove his point. But it's raining cats and...well, more cats! What's a cat to do on a rainy day? The answers will have you meowling with pure delight and (dare we say it) laughing in the rain, walking hand in hand with the ones you love!
The illustrations are a delight in this easy reader.
Veg*n parents note: There is an extended scene involving "frosted fish sticks" being prepared by Splat's family; on the other hand they are, of course, cats.
A little long for my struggling to read first grader, but it tied in well to this week's words, which include the -ain words like rain and pain. I like that there are a handful of more difficult words sprinkled in.
This addition to this series is just as good as the others! I know that kids who are fans of this series, are really going to enjoy this book. Another Splat the Cat hit!
