Marie of Romania (Marie Alexandra Victoria), previously Princess Marie of Edinburgh, was a British Princess by birth and Romanian Queen by marriage.

She was the eldest daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. Her father was the second-eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Her mother was the only surviving daughter of Alexander II of Russia and Maria Alexandrovna of Hesse. She was baptised in the Private Chapel of Windsor Castle on 15 December 1875 and her godparents were the Empress and Tsarevitch of Russia, the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the Princess of Wales and the Duke of Connaught. As her father was in the Royal Navy, she spent much of her early childhood abroad, particularly in Malta.

A tender fairy tale so exquisitely illustrated you feel caressed, as warmed by the soft colors as by the cascade of gentle words. And yet, it is more than a children’s story. It is about sacrificial love, agape. Both cathartic and healing, reading The Miracle of Tears is an all-involving experience, more akin to a timely visit with a special friend or to suddenly reach/realize the unattainable. It seems open to interpretation on different levels, and yet empathetic to each as required.

The author, Marie, the Queen of Romania has written of the Sunchild so named because at her birth the sun kissed and enveloped her and then secretly took up residence in her heart. Beloved by everyone and more beautiful than a child had ever been, everyone came to the Sunchild with their problems. Sulasmith Wulfing’s sketches perfectly portray the subtlety of this imminently quiet soul amidst the bustle of busy life.

The Sunchild’s lot was to live with plain poor parents who failed to see their daughter for the marvel she was. But all the while the rest of the world saw the sun shining out of her eyes and brought her their sorrows and woes, which the purity of her thoughts could beautify, melt, ease, and one by one she collected all their tears in little jars. Each page is a delight of words and artistic beauty. Upon finishing, it is necessary to begin again.

Perhaps a gift for someone you know who is grieving? I found it very soothing and comforting.
