Ice Wreck

Rate this book
A hundred years ago, Ernest Shackleton and his crew set out for the South Pole. They never made it. Within sight of land, the ship ran into dangerous waters filled with chunks of ice. Then the sea froze around them! There was no hope of rescue. Could Shackleton find a way to save himself and his men?
“Well-written and packed with illustrations and photographs, this amazing tale of the will to survive under unthinkable circumstances will amaze kids and keep them glued to every page.”—Dallas Morning News
“Shackleton’s heart-pounding expedition and rescue comes vividly to life in this beginning chapter book.”—Booklist

This is a great early-reader non-fiction book about the failed Shackleton expedition of 1914-1916. Ernest Shackleton and his crew became stranded when their boat got stuck in the icy Antarctic Ocean, on their way to Antarctica where they had hoped to be the first explorers to cross frozen continent. An exciting read that kids will love, with simple vocabulary to help build reading confidence and fluency.

I would recommend it to any young reader. It is a good beginning book and has good pictures. It is about an explorer named Ernest Shackleton and his crew making a trip to Antarctic. Their ship gets stuck, so they have to go on a floating piece of ice. It made me wonder what was going to happen next and if they were going to make it off of the ice.

My daughter would give it 1 star. It started out exciting but then it got repetitive (more problems with ice, etc.) and then it got very sad because they shot their dogs and. "The dogs are the whole reason I like arctic stories!" she said.

So - beware if you read this - the story is evidently not edited for animal violence!

This was a great book! We love how they used the dogs. We love how Shackleton never gave up on his adventure. We enjoyed how it took place in Antarctica. We liked how they saied a ship. We read this book with our teacher at the International School of Morocco.
