Lucy in the Sky
Settling down for a 24-hour flight to Australia, Lucy finds a text message on her phone - not from her boyfriend James, as she fondly hopes, but from a woman claiming to have slept with him four times in the past month. Trapped on the plane, she questions everything about her relationship with James. She finally calls him and he reassures her: it was only his mates playing a silly joke.

Oh, this was... not good. Maybe after my Sophie Kinsella-athon I expected too much out of some more chick-lit. And evidently this particular chick-lit did not come even close. The premise of this made me happy because, as an Aussie, I love Aussie boys and Aussie places and because I love silly romances and clever chick-lit, I thought I was onto something.
Sadly, I was not.
Firstly, 'smart' chick-lit. Lucy, our dear protag, was anything but. She swung back and forth between James (fiance) and Nathan (Aussie boy toy) with little hesitation. Her attitude to hearing about James and his questioned fidelity was appalling, and she broke up with said fiance (with some seriously wishy-washy evidence) and was happily in love with the boy toy in less than a day. She has a cassette player from boy toy with some nice classic rock on it, and she'd afraid that if James sees her with it he'll immediately jump to the conclusion she'd in love with boy toy. Why? I have no idea.
Second, Australian stereotypes were running rampant and it made me hate Paige Toon and her stupid chick-lit.
It was set in Sydney, fair enough, Sydney has the highest population. But everyone was either a surfer, gardener or unemployed. Yeah, that isn't right. I just thought it would be nice if an Aussie book was set outside of the outback or Sydney for once. Canberra is the capital, how about a little respect, yo?
And third, the writing was shit. I couldn't even begin to like the characters because they were described as boringly as if they were a tea-towel or something.
And it was the old back and forth 'he said, she said' with nothing remotely funny to keep me sane. As a funny little thing, Paige Toon had Lucy and Nathan telling each other stupid jokes all. The. Time. And they weren't funny or cute. Just really stupid and annoying. I'm bitter aren't I?
I was not happy. Why can't there be more awesome chick-lit?

I now make tea by adding the milk onto the teabag, before the water. Just like Lucy's Nathan, who reminds me a little of my own little surfer boyfriend, now husband.
So this was a little reminiscent for me, light and fluffy, but actually it grew on me. It was sweet, these things do happen, a young 'ish' girl realising that maybe she shouldn't settle for what is just 'ok' and sometimes we need to consider taking a leap. A cute surfie boyfriend with not quite short hair either brings back memories!
It's always nice having settings in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney, and equally as much as the castles in London.
I was assuming this would be a 3 star read, but I decided on 4, it was fun and that's always good.

Lucy is one of the most annoying whining characters that I have ever came across. There is nothing that I liked in this novel. I obviously didn't like the protagonist (just stated that, didn't I?), but I cared neither for the plot, nor for the content. The writing isn't particularly terrible, but it is far from being great writing. The whole novel is unbelievably shallow and boring. I did read this book from cover to cover, I just didn't like it. I know it is a light read and I was not expecting it to be brilliant in any way, but even as a light reading, it was very very dull. I'm not a fan of romance genre, but I might pick up a romance once in a while. I don't hate this genre, I'm pretty open minded when it comes to reading. It is just this novel that I strongly dislike. I just didn't enjoy reading it. Not at all. I can't think of one thing that I liked about this one. Not even one. I guess that means one star.

Lucy In The Sky is Paige Toon’s debut novel. It’s the story of Lucy who goes back to her native Australia for her best friends’, Molly and Sam, wedding. Just before her flight takes off, she gets a text message from her boyfriend James and her whole world comes crashing down…
Lucy In The Sky is one of my favourite books, along with Paige’s other novel Johnny Be Good (and others), and is a very impressive debut novel. The writing style is told in first-person so we hear all of Lucy’s thoughts about the text message, going back to Aussie and her dilemma between her boyfriends of four years, and Sam’s younger brother Nathan who she falls for while in Oz.
Lucy is a brilliant character, sure she has flaws, and did string along both Nathan and James in a way but she did it for reason. I think the fact that James was such a good liar made it easy for Lucy to believe she did love both him and Nathan. You’re with her every step of the way from the flight to Oz where she receives the text to the holiday and back to London and you just want to keep reading and reading and see what exactly happens next.
Nathan was an equally good character and I loved how he was pretty much there during the whole novel whether it be telling stupid jokes to Lucy or it just being Lucy thinking of him.
I loved Molly and Sam and while they were in Aussie for half the novel to Lucy’s being in London they were also present and I like that they didn’t fade away at all after the wedding.
James irritated me through-out. which I’m sure is what he was meant to do! – and I kept hoping Lucy would just dump him! I have to say though, Paige wrote James well so it was easy to believe that Lucy would believe everything he was saying.
I enjoyed all of the minor characters, Lucy’s work colleagues, her old friends from Uni and her old friends from Australia. Paige introduced us to some brilliant characters who all clicked together.
I also enjoyed how the novel was set in both Australia and London and how both were described really really well.
Oh and before I read Johnny Be Good I didn’t realise that Meg was in Lucy In The Sky until my re-read so it was nice to see her pop up before her novel was out!
Overall it was indeed an impressive debut. Paige just has an easy writing style to her that, one minute you could be on page 1 and the next you’re on 150 and halfway through the novel. An absolutely brilliant novel and one I highly recommend.

This was so cute but verrrryyy toxic at the same time, I was irritated most of the book by Lucy, but the epilogue hit me right in the feels, she made the right decision <33

2021 REREAD
I decided to lower my rating from four to three stars because I just didn't enjoy Lucy in the Sky as much as I did five years ago. I still think that it's a fun and quick read (just like all of Paige Toon's books) but I wasn't as much of a fan of the writing anymore. You can definitely tell how much her writing style has evolved over the years if you read some of her more recent novels. I also once again wasn't a big fan of the ending, even though I now know what's happened because I've read all of her other books.

I loved the book, I really did. It was a perfect summer read and also very gripping. The book made me laugh out loud at some points and I now want to really have my own Nathan please!!!
I really liked Paige Toon's writing style especially because it was so British. (Let me just tell you that this book is definitely nothing for you if you have a problem with swear words :D)
It also caused extreme wanderlust and now I really want to go to Australia or just back to London!! I'm really glad I decided to get this book even though I'd never heard of it before. The only thing I actually didn't like was the end because I felt like it was a little too abrupt and I didn't really understand what was actually going on now.
But besides that it was a lovely book and I would definitely recommend it!!

This book is about having the courage of following your heart no matter the odds, the obstacles, or what everybody else think you should be doing.
The beginning and the end of the book were 5 stars. Gripping, filled with tension, and quick paced.
The middle part was a little bit dull, 2 starish, it felt as if I wasn’t reading about anything in particular, which is upsetting, and it was also slow. Plus, the story of the father was a bit over the top of depressing for me.
So the mean would be 3.5 stars that I am rounding up to four.
The story is predictable, but nonetheless enjoyable.

Agony. Heartbreak. Gut-feelings. Indecision.
Such is life that we constantly face cross-roads. One choice may change everything. So, the story starts out with Lucy returning home to Australia from England. She meets Nathan, a younger brother of one of her best friends, and falls hopelessly in love with him. When she must go back to England, she faces the prospect of being James' long-term, live-in girlfriend. As 7 months pass by, Lucy comes to the realization that she has deeper feelings for Nathan, especially since he decides to take a job in England for 3 months. The situation intensifies. What happens then? True colours are revealed, although there were enough clues to foreshadow the inevitable. It is a somewhat confusing/surprising, yet believable ending. All's well that ends well, like they say. The agonizing parts of the story involve cheating, but moreover, the deceit and manipulation.
For me, it was a 4.5 because as painful as it was to read, Paige Toon's writing clicks with me. Out of the 3 books I've read by her, I have enjoyed all of them. They were distinct books which were all compelling, and shows the realities of relationships. All of them are heartbreaking! This one is all about the importance of trust and acknowledging hard truths. Just the way Lucy's relationship was so vastly different with Nathan and James shows that sometimes love cannot be measured by a pro and con list (on paper), it's about the chemistry, the laughter, and sincerity/openness/truth-worthiness. Deep down, I think we find it hard to admit what we knew all along. But, it's better to be hurt by the truth than be comforted by a lie. This book proves just that. In this love triangle, you'll find a HEA but a difficult route there. Definitely not a light, easy read.

I dunno how that happened but this book went down the drain. Like really. It started so good and I had a good feeling that I finally picked up a funny, charming and wonderful book. But in the end, I did get a boring, stupid and blahblahblah book. WTF?!
Usually I am all for the romance thing like a girl torn between 2 guys and stuff like that but here? I really couldn't take it much longer. As I said the beginning was fun, interesting and looked promising with Lucy receiving a sms from an anonymous person, but sent from her bf's cell phone. But then this super boring flight and her even more boring visit in Australia happened. Which, in the end, weren't half as boring as her being back in London and even staying with her bf after everything that happened in Australia. Girl, seriously?
In the end I was so so very bored, I skipped a lot of pages. And I still fully understood what happened after all. The most annyoing thing was that here nearly wasn't any reference to that sms. She just lived her boring life, that's all. So, why didn't she just left her bf and got back to Australia? This was beyond me.
This book/story probably could have been way better when at least 150 pages were cut. So, it is a boring and blah book, where you are just happy when you finished it. Why everybody loved it so much is seriously beyond me.

I may be a bit young to read this book, since Lucy is 25 and the whole book is in her perspective. But I thought it was a bit too much. I mean come on woman! Be at least a little independent! 'Oh I can't choose between two men I don't know what to do my life is over!' So over dramatic in my opinion.
There was really no character development throughout this entire book and it was pretty boring all the way through.
I mean, she was SO stupid! Like can you not see that you are pretty successful and you can make your OWN money and live off of it without any man. But no. I just felt like she was so desperate to be with someone, like come on! She has friends and could hang out with them more but no, everything is about her and her life! She didn't care about anyone else and what they were feeling at all. She was a selfish character throughout this entire novel.
Sorry if I have offended you, but that's just how I feel about this book, and everyone has different opinions on everything but my opinion on this book... for me, it sucked! I had such high expectations for it and it didn't deliver. I'm disappointed and I would've been happier if she was a lot more independent and confident in herself that she can look after herself and didn't need a partner.

I have really mixed feelings about this book. Overall I enjoyed it, but there were too many things about it that pissed me off.
For starters, I liked the overall idea of the plot, but I feel like it was just taken too far. It was extremely repetitive throughout the whole book, especially with the whole romance and the "do I love James or do I love Nathan?". By the end of it I didn't even know what I thought to be honest. I feel like I've been manipulated or brainwashed in a way because .
With the characters.. I don't really know. This is basically where I have the really mixed feelings because I didn't love any of the characters. Lucy I found to be quite annoying and hypocritical since she was doing the same thing her boyfriend was doing to her. So just no to that. The two love interests, well I don't know. I liked James (the original boyfriend) and I kind of felt sorry for him to have to put up with Lucy. But then there was Nathan and I did really like him, I just didn't like the whole situation. Although Lucy and Nathan had this "thing" they would do where they would tell each other really crappy jokes each time they spoke and sometimes they were ok, but for the most part they were just extremely cringe worthy.
My biggest complaint is the bloody chapters. They were so damn long!! One chapter was over an hour long which is absolutely ridiculous and it just made me angry. There were too many scenes in the one chapter that it just got a bit muddled.
Because I listened to the book on Audible I thought I'd give a little review of the audiobook itself. The reader was fine as the character of Lucy, but I feel this is one book that would have needed at least one other character. I just really don't like when women read men's parts or vice versa, it just didn't sound right. Add to the fact that they had a really bad Australian accent (sorry not sorry). It sounded more Kiwi than anything which was just annoying. I suppose a non-Australian listening to it wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but I could. I did have to speed up the reader's voice because it was a little bit too slow for me, but it's not a big issue.
So even though I didn't really have anything positive to say about this, I did enjoy reading it. It pissed me off at times, but by about the halfway mark I couldn't stop listening to it and I don't regret reading it. Having said that, it is definitely on my favourites, and I probably won't be reaching for another Paige Toon book any time soon...
Would I recommend? Maybe...

Когда я начинала книгу, я рассчитывала на великолепный вкус автора в музыке (Все-таки "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" - классика и одна из любимых моих песен), я не прогадала, Radiohead, The Verve и другие потрясающие группы были в списке любимых у главной героини. Не удивительно, я сумасшедшая поклонника британской музыки и бритпопа в частности, Лондона и всей Великобритании.
Да, было потрясающе читать про описания мест Лондона, по которым, в принципе, не так давно я сама еще ходила (всю книгу в голове у меня «играла» песня OneRepublic “Good life”: "Woke up in London yesterday. Found myself in the city near Piccadilly"), мне нравится атмосфера Лондона, НО... книга совершенно нереально ужасная. Героиня... да на месте ее парня я не только ей изменяла, но еще и поколачивала. Она совершенно неадекватная самовлюбленная эгоистка, которая всю книгу винила парня в том, что он ей изменяет, а у самой рыльце-то в пушку... она издевалась над обоими парнями. И особенно мне понравилось, как под конец парень ей говорит, что любит ее, она разбивает ему сердце, сидит, ревет и думает: «А [он] будет слышать новости обо мне, и сердце его будет разрываться каждый раз от сознания того, что он потерял. Эта мысль почему-то меня успокаивает, я вытираю слезы, беру сумочку и словно в тумане иду пешком остаток пути до работы». Вот в этой цитате вся главная героиня... Она (не он ей!!!) разбила ему сердце, и ей хорошо от осознания того, что парень будет мучиться.
Я действительно не понимаю, почему в 99% книг, где великолепный саундтрек, абсолютно бредовый сюжет и отвратительные герои?
Порадовал эпилог: во-первых, тем, что там всего 1 абзац, а во-вторых, полуоткрытым финалом. Но книгу, по-хорошему, стоило бы сжечь или отправить на вторсырье.
А, забыла о чудесном юморе героев. Я понимаю, что это их фишка, но зачем настолько тупые анекдоты всю книжку травить? Прямо жуть... у меня чувство юмора неплохое, так у меня кровь из глаз текла, когда я это читала.
— Ой, Люс! Ты меня уморила. Не смущайся. Слушай-ка, вот это поднимет тебе настроение. Лежат две сосиски на сковородке. И одна говорит: «Чтоб мне провалиться, как здесь горячо!». А вторая: «Черт! Говорящая сосиска!».
Мой смех переходит в фырканье — очень «привлекательное».
— Да уж, прикольно! — хихикаю я. — Ладно, теперь моя очередь… Что получится, если скрестить ежа и ужа? — Нейтан мотает головой. — Полтора метра колючей проволоки.
Теперь его очередь фыркать. Однако, не отталкивающе.
И так ВСЮ КНИГУ!!!

Да, было потрясающе читать про описания мест Лондона, по которым, в принципе, не так давно я сама еще ходила (всю книгу в голове у меня «играла» песня OneRepublic “Good life”: "Woke up in London yesterday. Found myself in the city near Piccadilly"), мне нравится атмосфера Лондона, НО... книга совершенно нереально ужасная. Героиня... да на месте ее парня я не только ей изменяла, но еще и поколачивала. In How I Met Your Mother, there's a running gag where Barney is convinced the real hero of The Karate Kid is actually William Zabka and is baffled that everyone else is nuts for Macchio. My feelings for this novel are somewhat similar. It's Lucy, see? Our titular hero struck me as a manipulative, reactionary and self-deluding bint who spends the entire novel emotionally fucking over two men whilst feeling wildly sorry for her self-created drama. It made me cross.

I'm so late to the party with Paige Toon books but am loving them so much I've bought most of the back catalogue. Luckily for me there are a few still to get through but I feel like I need to savour them! Really likeable characters (well, for the most part) and not the soppy chick lit that the covers always made me believe them to be.

Erm...WTH was with this book? It started out good. But then Lucy started to bitch about not trusting her boyfriend. Just dump his ass. I think it's a pretty stupid to move in with your boyfriend after dating only a couple of days/weeks. I am not even sure if people do that sort of thing in real life. However I did like Nathan. His relationship with Lucy wasn't moving too fast. They got to know each other and were friends for a long time.

Going to be honest...I have a soft spot for Paige Toon books. She is one of my favourite authors.
Really enjoyed this - Lucy is second guessing her relationship (and for all the right reasons I believe). She gets a glimpse of a possible different future.
Classic case of does she follow her heart or her head. Really liked the characters.

This is the third time I have read this book. It's my favourite book ever and Paige Toon is my favourite chic-lit author. The first couple of times I read this I didn't write reviews and with it being my favourite book I thought I would re-read it and so now I'm writing the review for it.
I love this book, I love everything about this book and it's a book I can re-read over and over again and never get bored because it's such an amazing love story. It was one of the first books I read and it's the book that made me love reading and got me interested in reading. Though I have found a love for Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy books Chic-lit will always be my favourite genre of books.
Lucy is on a flight to Australia to her best friends wedding when she gets a text from her boyfriend of three years phone wrote by someone else telling of his infidelity. Lucy is distraught and heartbroken that he would do this to her. When he tells her that it was a drunken joke from his friends Lucy decides to believe him but still has her doubts. Then she gets re-aquinted with Nathan, her best friends younger brother and instantly feels things towards him she has never felt before, not even with James. Suddenly she is torn between two guys, James, who may or may not be cheating on her or Nathan, the guy she has fallen in love with but doesn't know what to do about it.
I love everything about this book. It's my favourite chic lit book and I can't say a bad word about it. It's amazing. I love Nathan, he was the first fictional guy I ever fell in love with and no matter how many books I read and how many more fictional guys I fall in love with I don't think anyone can compare to Nathan, my first fictional love.
He is just sweet and adorable and all the way through the book I found myself saying just leave James and be with Nathan. I never really believed that he hadn't cheated on her and it took all my will power to not look in the back of the book and see who she ended up with.

This was just the thing I needed. A light, breezy, love story. Lucy is so likeable, even if I didn't quite agree with her decisions at times. But I think any 25year old can be a little scatty in their love life, as long as the right thing was done at the end its ok.
Having read some later books by the author, I can see that her story telling has really developed from Lucy in the Sky - her debut. But I cant fault it, it was a feel good story. Appart from one character, who I would like to know more about, because I get the feeling they had a lot going on mentaly! I weirdly felt sorry for them, despite them coming accross as the 'baddie' in the book.
Recommend this to all Paige Toon fans

This book instantly takes you in. Lucy is on her way to Australia, when she discovers a message on her phone. This message changes everything. IS HER BOYFRIEND JAMES REALLY CHEATING ON HER?
The flights to Australia are the worst hours on her life. She calls James immediately, when she gets the possibility. He is denying everything and now she doesn’t know what to believe.
In Sydney Molly and Sam, her friends, pick her up. Her two best friends are getting married to each other. Sam used to be Lucy’s love of her life, does she still has feelings for him?
Then another man comes into her life, it’s Sam’s younger brother Nathan and Lucy is falling for him from the beginning. The two of them get along really well, they go surfing together, have lots of talks and they seem perfect for each other. However, nothing happens between them. There is still James and Nathan’s life is also complicated. At the wedding they have a really intense moment, they almost kiss, but the next day Lucy returns to London.
She goes back to work and tries to find out whether James is lying or not. Her thoughts though still remain with Nathan all the time.
One day, Nathan calls her and has big news: He is coming to England for work, with his work Buddy Richard (we’ll see him again in Pictures of Lily).
Lucy is really happy about that, but doesn’t want to show that to James.
She tries to be with Nathan as often as she can and as a reader I was always hoping that something is going to happen between them. It takes a really long time, though and that’s why I couldn’t put the book down.
After their, let’s call it, „snogging“, Lucy tells James everything, but he somehow wants to fight for her.
One night they go into a pub and there the truth about James comes out and Lucy’s life changes.
Nathan comes to rescue her and finally Lucy gets what she wants and she can be happy after all.
This story is so wonderful. As a reader I fell in love with Lucy and Nathan from the first moment on and was only waiting for them to be together.
They are just perfect for each other and Paige Toon’s style of writing made the story real, passionate and emotional.
An amazing debut novel that makes you want to read more of this great and talented author.

Lucy in the Sky- mal wieder eine empfehlung von der lieben BuchlingJanine ( bekannt auf YT) . Eigentlich lese ich nicht so gerne "Liebesgeschichten", aber hier habe ich sehr gerne eine Ausnahme gemacht.
Zum Inhalt:
Lucy sitzt gerade in einem Flügzeug von London nach Australien, als sie eine SMS von ihrem Freund James bekommt. In der steht:
»Hi Lucy! Habe gerade mit James in deinem Bett geschlafen. Dachte, du solltest das wissen. 4mal diesen Monat. Hübsche Bettwäsche! XXX «
Natürlich muss Lucy nun erstmal ihren flug durchstehen und kann die Sache erst nach mehreren Stunden versuchen zu klären.
Endlich in Australien angekommen ( sie fliegt dort hin, weil ihre besten Freunde heiraten) "lernt sie " Nathan, den kleinen Bruder von Sam "neu kennen". Als die beiden sich das letzte mal sahen, war Nathan noch ein Teenie.
Lucy, fühlt sich sehr zu Nathan hingezogen, versucht aber krampfhaft an ihrem alten Leben mit James festzuhalten. Nach der Hochzeit fliegt sie wieder zurück nach England und auch zu James, aber nichts ist so wie es früher einmal war.
Mir hat vorallem das Thema der Dreiecksbeziehung gefallen. Auch wurde sehr gut dargestellt, wie Lucy sich die ganze Zeit gefühlt hat. Es ging von Freude, Leidenschaft, Liebe bis hin zu Missstrauen und Unsicherheit.
Der Schreibstil ist ein wenig lang. 100-150 weniger hätten es auch getan, aber gut ich will da drüber hinweg sehen. Es ist halt nicht immer was los, in diesem Roman.
Übrigens hat mir sehr gut die Beschreibungen am Strand und auch in London gefallen. Ich hatte immer das Gefühl "Live" dabeizusein. Auch Lucy war eine unfassbar tolle Protagonisten.
Im übrigen möchte ich nochmal das Layout vom Cover loben <3. Ich liebe es.
Das Ende fand ich sehr überraschend, mit der Wendung hatte ich nicht mehr gerechnet =)).
Ein toller Frauenroman, für zwischendurch oder an lauen Sommertagen/ Nächten.

What a terrible book.
It has it all:
- calling people fatso for no reason and making fun of the partner for being too skinny. Do not forget the disdainful speculation of how they would have sex him being so fat and she being so skinny. Of perfect strangers that have done nothing to the main character.
- voluntary stupidity of the main character at all times and possible circumstances.
- PREDICTABLE in the most annoying way.
- massive editing was required.
- the topic is so stupid! Yes, a person can have romantic feelings for two different people at once but to go on about it in such a childish and unnecessary dramatic way.... Pppfff

I read this book only because someone from my book club picked it. A former friend. The author obviously picked the name of the book, and then wrote almost 400 pages to try and make the name work. It didn't.
Not only was it one of the most boring books I've ever read, but I couldn't tell you a personality trait of one person in the entire book. They all have no personally traits. The only things we know about them is what the author tells us, but certainly doesn't show us (Nathan is funny, apparently).
Further, and maybe most troubling at all, the moral lesson of the book (cheating is bad) seems only applicable at certain times and to certain people. I can forgive Paige Toon for writing a boring book with dimension-less characters and meaningless plot points, but I cannot forgive her for writing the entire book around the premise that cheating is bad, and then allowing a character to essentially cheat, but when they do it's okay, because...love.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.

UPDATE: I have now read this for a 4th time!
I started this this morning at 10am and by 2:30pm I was finished.
This isn't the first time I've read a Paige Toon book in one sitting.
It was phenomenal and I completely fell in love with Nathan.
I find that Paige Toon is really good at doing that. She's very good at making you fall in love with the characters. I was rooting for Lucy and Nathan from the second we were introduced to him.
I cannot wait to get my hands on another book by this brilliant author.

My only excuse for reading this book is that I was lying in the hospital and this was all that was at my hand....Wait! I take that back, there is no excuse for reading this book, not even being hospitalized and bored.
I might have guessed that I won't like it (chic-lit has never been my cup of tea) but the fact is that I hate it. It is predictable, boring, xenophobic, full of stereotypes and as for Lucy--- is it possible to be more annoying?

Lucy is really one of the most unlikeable characters I came across in a long time. And I read Game Of Thrones not long ago!

Not my favourite Paige Toon but a strong debut nonetheless, and I’d recommend reading it first if you haven’t read any of Toon’s novels yet. Her characters find their way into future novels so it’s fun to read them in order of publication. Funny, relatable and addictive.
