A card player named Quintus Tiverton is on his way to Paris when one night he hears a young woman crying in the room next door. He decides to follow his heart and goes to her and meets Serena Wade - an innocent beauty who has become a prisoner after being tricked by a woman. Her life is in danger and Quintus makes her promise to obey him until he finds her a husband who can protect her. From then on, they have to pretend to be siblings while Quintus introduces her to every suitable bachelor in Paris — but deep down, both Quintus and Serana realize that they only belong to each other.

Barbara Cartland is a magical writer who knows her genre and show how as a writer the way to emphasize romance and the power of love in small but meaningful scenes.I remember how strongly she did that in The Cruel Count which i rated 5-stars.Both Serena and Quintus are fine characters but i decided to delete one star because of the way they ended up together.SPOILER WARNING!***i don`t like that Quintus was ACTUALLY going to let Serena marry another man if she wouldn`t have threatened to commit suicide. She was literally on her way to drown herself in the river if Quintus hadn`t stopped her and decided to finally confess his love for her.

As with all of her books, the characters seem awfully breathy, but sweetly innocent.

A light weekend read, just what I needed.

A tad "soppy", but quite an interesting read of times I doubt will ever return
