Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
This book is a continuation, it is about a great change in the circus, the ringmaster. Jimmy and Lotta got into trouble a lot. Nobody liked the ringmaster. Lotta didn’t give up and found a way to save the circus.
Tells us the importance of good leadership and a healthy work environment. Never expected such lessons to come from a book meant for kids. I'm pleasantly surprised. Good stuff, and a happy ending. Glad I read this to visit some childhood nostalgia.
Mrs Galliano is ill, so Mr Galliano leaves the circus in the hands of the unpleasant enchanter Britomart. Soon life is so unpleasant that many circus folk are planning on leaving, plucky Lotta takes matters into her own hands to save the circus we all know and love
The best of the Galliano's circus series where it nearly leads to complete disaster when Mrs Galliano falls ill and she and her husband go away so she can recuperate. A critique on good and bad management styles.
Rombongan sirkus pun kemudian bertambah anggotanya.
Lotta dilarang naik Si Hitam Manis; binatang-binatang sirkus harus dikandangkan semua, termasuk Jemima, Sammy, beruang-beruang Pak Volla; Jimmy dilarang mendekati kandang-kandang binatang.
Bisakah keadaan kembali baik? Silahkan baca biar tidak penasaran...
I cannot help but wonder how my life would have been if I got the opportunity of living a life with the circus folks. Surrounded by all the cute animals, gorgeous artists, talented folks will surely make an individual's life wonderful.
This is the third book in the trilogy and I have loved each and every book. Sad that I wont be hearing the adventures of Jim and the rest of the circus folks but the book has ended on a perfect note.
'The best way to treat obstacles is to use them as stepping-stones. Laugh at them, tread on them, and let them lead you to something better.'
Sometime in 2024, I decided I wanted to listen to all the books which I loved as a kid and most of these (in fact probably all of them) were written by a British author called Enid Blyton. All my UK friends should have heard of her, but I don't think she was a 'thing' in the US. Anyway, luckily Borrowbox seemed to have a lot of them, so I'm slowly going through them - usually when I need a little pick-me-up! I'm going to review the series, rather than the actual books, otherwise we will be here until 2030!
My first reviews come from Mr Galliano's Circus Story Collection, which comprises Mr Galliano's Circus (1938), Hurrah for the Circus! (1939) and Circus Days Again (1942).
Mr Galliano is the ringmaster in a travelling circus and in each delightful book, we meet a wide variety of fun (and sometimes bad) characters, who our protagonists - Lotta and Jimmy - interact with on a daily basis. There are clowns, bears, elephants, tigers, trapeze artists and chimpanzees, and they all get up to all sorts of mischief between them.
I found these books to be lighthearted, heartwarming, and easy to listen to, whilst bringing back lots of gorgeous childhood memories.
Just remember that Enid Blyton's books were written in the middle of the twentieth century. Many things have changed, and circuses aren't the same today as they were back then. We definitely don't have animals in circuses any more in the UK.
Enid Blyton's books may be books for children and they may not be perfect but it's amazing how some books actually contain messages that even adults can learn from.
Curcus Days Again is the final book in this series. Jimmy and Lotta once again go on adventures and meet with obstacles along the way.
I wanted to talk about one valuable lesson that can be learnt from this book- leadership. While Mr. Galliano may not be a typical or even logical character that would exist in real life, the story shows how his leadership actually helps his circus folk work better and how a possible loss of that leadership may affect their spirits.
You have to read the book to find out more but as a teacher, I would recommend that children read Mr. Galliano's Circus series and discuss the values that the stories bring.
LOVED these books as a kid, and have just finished reading the series to my kids. Read it the first time (to my kids) when my oldest was 6. Now he's 11 and my youngest is 5 (others 7 & 9), and they all loved it, and wished there were more books in the series! These books are classics.
This definitely was one of those books that made me want to run away and become a horse trainer, or an elephant trainer. It follows the children of the circus and the adventures they encounter.
I think last of the series, I found utmost enjoyable as the boy had acclimatized to the circus completely and finally enjoying himself and his adventures as well.
