Selena Kitt is a NEW YORK TIMES bestselling and award-winning author of erotic and romance fiction. She is one of the highest selling erotic writers in the business with over two million books sold!
Her writing embodies everything from the spicy to the scandalous, but watch out-this kitty also has sharp claws and her stories often include intriguing edges and twists that take readers to new, thought-provoking depths.
Her books EcoErotica (2009), The Real Mother Goose (2010) and Heidi and the Kaiser (2011) were all Epic Award Finalists. Her only gay male romance, Second Chance, won the Epic Award in Erotica in 2011. Her story, Connections, was one of the runners-up for the 2006 Rauxa Prize, given annually to an erotic short story of “exceptional literary quality.”
Rapunzel - 3 stars. It's a sweet, romantic, touching, and funny story. My review.
Alice - 3 stars. It is a modern erotic version of Alice in Wonderland. Just like the original work, it is dreamlike and surreal. It could be satisfying if you are in the mood for something light and bizarre. My review.
Enjoyed these stories on two counts...one the fairytale rewrites, with the familiarity of main character representations from favourite childhood stories, but now in adult life stories and some quite erotic ones too. Loved the romance of Red and the setting of New York 1920's recession time. Some longer than others and some are three star and others four so overall just four from me.
Nice to read without all the advertising Selena adds in at the latter quarter or half of her individual stories!
I was hoping for a collection of naughty fairy tales, but other than Alice, most of these are quite tame. They're also not so much retellings as they are recycling character names and very loose plot points, or very literal retellings with a sex scene thrown in. There are a couple of good, imaginative stories here, but for the most part it was disappointing.
Beauty: ★★☆☆☆
This one was quite awkward. Of course, being a modern retelling, the hero is badly scarred and hides his face and body from the heroine. But that's basically the only connection to the original tale. Instead it reads like a very awkward and rushed Romantic Suspense, as Jolee's husband hired some men to kidnap and murder her, but his brother, Silas, finds her, nurses her back to health, and they fall in love. All without her ever seeing his face, not that looks matter. But he wore a ski mask all the time which is awkward.
Goldilocks ★★★★☆
I really liked this one! Goldilocks as a locksmith slash cat burglar is a great twist! Although the actual plot reminded me more of Robin Hood, because Goldie and her partner in crime are stealing back something very, very important to someone. There's an amazing amount of backstory and history here, which I thought was great for such a short story! It would probably have made a good full-length suspense.
Briar Rose ★★☆☆☆
I'm a bit torn on this one. Our Sleeping Beauty can only orgasm while dreaming, which is quite the interesting erotic twist. However, parts of the story are actually quite uncomfortable. It opens with Rose attempting to commit suicide and hoping her ex-fiance finds her. Then she's whisked away to this sexual therapy facility where, of course, she falls in love with her doctor. It's totally unethical what they do, even if he did get it "approved." I liked the whole idea of Rose going to this unconventional facility, but the doctor-patient relationship didn't sit right with me even though the author did include discussions of ethics and contracts. It was just a weird one for me.
Goldilocks ★★★★☆
Making Goldilocks a hairdresser isn't the most original twist, but making her a hairdresser with cancer, who lost all of her hair and has to wear a wig is pretty great! This is probably the sweetest story in the collection, as Rachel deals with the insecurity of losing all of her hair, finds love, and saves her salon!
Red ★★★★☆
This one is probably my favorite! It's set in the 1930s and is the most obvious retelling. Mae is taking care of her sick grandmother as they prepare to move away from the city. The wolf character is a total sleeze! The huntsman is a magician! It has a bit of suspense and was just a fun read!
Alice ★★☆☆☆
I liked this one at first, because Wonderland is a BDSM club! It's the only story which is actually "wicked." But then Alice suddenly freaks out and I have no idea why, and it becomes the Disney movie but with nudity. Basically it got too weird and less sexy.
Gretel ★★☆☆☆
I'm a bit bummed over this one! I know the author isn't afraid to go there, so I was definitely expecting this one to be a (step-)sibling lovin' story! It's not, sadly. I did like the twist of Hans and Gretel's grandmother being the head of a sugar cane company who has nefarious plans! That was fun, but the sex has the absolute worst dialogue. *cringe*
Wendy: ★☆☆☆☆
So...that was actually pretty terrible. I hate retellings where every single character's name is exactly the same and no one finds it odd. And Peter sounded twelve which was unbelievable for an eighteen year old, especially one who has gone through what he has. It also just made the sex super duper awkward, because...twelve. Not to mention that Tink is an insensitively portrayed transgender woman.
I can say for a fact I liked this collection of stories by Selena Kitt more than any other story she has written. Most of her literature seems to lean very heavily on the taboo and I’m not so much into that. I felt like this collection of stories had just the right amount of story and sex to make them interesting. I definitely liked some more than others so I’ve listed them below in the order of my most favorite to least, along with a little blurb about how I felt about each one.
Rapunzel-This one was by far my most favorite in this entire collection. There really wasn’t much sex or eroticism but the story was fantastic. I could almost see it being really good as a longer, novella length, story. I ALMOST cried at the end (almost is a pretty big deal for me since I never cry in movies or books).
Briar Rose-I really enjoyed this story as well. I thought the plotline was really interesting and thought this was yet another story I could’ve seen done as a longer length novella. There does seem to be some of this that is a little unrealistic given how long Rose suffered from her “problem” then to all of the sudden be freed from that problem after one time with a particular character. But I still really liked the story and really appreciated how it ended. I honestly wonder how many women in the world have this issue?
Gretel-I thought this story was very entertaining and I really loved the spin-off of the Hansel and Gretel story. I probably enjoyed the eroticism in this story more than any of the others but it really did have a solid back story that I appreciated.
Beauty-I don’t feel like I need to say much about this story except that it was much sweeter than I anticipated. This was the first story I read and being that this is a Selena Kitt bundle, I was extremely surprised by how toned down this whole story was for a sex perspective. I honestly thoroughly enjoyed the story that she developed and found myself very much caring about what happened to the characters.
Wendy-I liked this adaptation of Peter Pan but would definitely put it in the 3 star category. It wasn’t great but I did like the colorful characters that were introduced and liked how their personalities really seemed to reflect what they had all been through.
Alice-This one was extremely strange and I found myself really just irritated with the way it ended. The story did have some fun erotic scenes in and of themselves but the story as a whole was way too bizarre for me.
Red-I guess this was actually a pretty sweet story with a nice HEA but I found it quite boring and unfortunately can’t say much else about it. I think the only thing I actually really liked about this story was the description of the red hooded cape that she wears.
Goldilocks-This was by far my least favorite of the series. I found myself skimming through the whole story because the plot really couldn’t keep me interested and the sex was lackluster.
Just finished Beauty and it wasn't what I expected, but it was a dam good story! Goldilocks was also a good story. Briar Rose was another excellent story. OK, Rapunzel was a very beautiful story and I am secure enough in my manhood to admit that I had a tear in my eye when I finished reading it. I just finished Red and unfortunately I didn't really enjoy that story. Alice was a bit too bizarre for me, but it was still entertaining. Gretel was a fun story. Wendy was an excellent way to finish the series. This was a fun set of stories well worth reading!
Modern Wicked Fairy Tales was a complete disappointment. Fairy tale retelling is one of my favourite genres, but, the synopsis notwithstanding, Kitt's Modern Wicked Fairy Tales aren't truly retellings. With each story, Kitt seems to have used a fairy tale as a very very vague starting point to brainstorm for ideas. Most of the story has been lost and so too has the magic. Instead of capturing the feeling of a fairy tale, we are lumbered with contemporary settings and minimal stories that only poorly serve to set the scene for lots of sex. Barring a few details, the sex across the eight stories is homogenous and mainly seems to consist of blow jobs. This does not appeal to me at all, but even for those who it does appeal to, I'd like to think that most readers want a half decent story along with the sex scenes. You might as well just watch porn otherwise.
So much variety! That's all I can think with this one!
Beauty & The Beast gets a hitman-style makeover while Goldilocks isn't some lost little girl looking for shelter, oh no, she's a world-class safe-cracker, grifter and thief who happens to be kinky on top of all that awesomeness.
Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) wakes up to her own worth after a suicide attempt; this was honestly my favorite piece in the whole set as I loved the premise, the character evolution, and I wholly empathized with Rose's feelings of inadequacy and helplessness. She's the kind of heroine that made me want to root for her while her hero was hot like burning lava with enough compassion to understand her along the way.
Rapunzel's story took a more somber turn as it dealt with cancer; I may or may not have actually cried while reading it. I refuse to admit to it either way. Rachel is a lovely character. She's breathtaking and strong and I wanted her to live as much as she could with her "prince" in this one. It's the kind of story whose HEA leaves the reader feeling good for hours afterward. There was a lot of content in the piece for its length. It was sexy in a wholly new way for Selena's writing, in my opinion, since it was more sultry than in-your-face. There was more erotic allure to it because the reader was encouraged to invest in the characters more than in their sex life.
Little Red Riding Hood meets a gangster-style wolf in her story which is a period piece! I love period work so it thrilled me to see this one set in the '30s. It's a clever story with a lot of plot and just the right mix of sexy to keep it erotic along the way. This one felt classic to me. It's one I read more than once because I wanted to capture all the details I missed on the first read through.
Alice finds a whole new Wonderland in the form a secret club that's all erotic all the time and her story made me feel as if I had finally fallen down the rabbit hole with Selena Kitt in the collection. Very hot read! I'm surprised the Kindle didn't catch on fire.
I waited until last to read Gretel's story even though it was not the last story in the set. Incest is my personal kink of choice so I was hoping that it would lean in that direction though it doesn't at all. I really have no idea how to explain this one without ruining the surprise element. Selena did a truly impressive job of weaving in the elements of the original story -the candy, the wicked witch who eats children, the brother and sister lost alone in the wild- while keeping it wholly modern. It's a great piece whose ending thrilled me. Great read!
The actual last story goes to Wendy of Peter Pan fame. The Darlings aren't as blessed in this version as they were in their original tale though Peter is still a wicked creature. There's a lot of random modern elements to it which surprised me. It was a lot darker than I anticipated which was thrilling. I love a good dark tale. Hook was as vicious, horrible, and nasty as in the original while Peter's charisma made him lift right off the page to come alive, encouraging me to take his hand on the way to Neverland. It was a great ending story even though I didn't read it at the end myself. I've read it more than once too in order to take it all in. Tink? Best. Surprise. Ever. Couldn't have been a better modern twist for a fairy in my opinion.
Every story in this was different, unique, and such a great new spin on an old story. It was a steal for the price! I'm so glad I grabbed it for myself. Five stars all around!
Adored Beauty, Red and Rapunzel's story. The other ones were more of a "BELH, this is just another porn scene." There's a lot of steamy sex scenes (which Kitt is known for), but I was pleasantly surprise to find that those three I adore actually involve characters I enjoyed reading about and a plot that had me on the edge of my seat. I wanted more! But sadly it all ended too soon due to it being short stories. Oh, and there's actually a fell to the stories that had me thinking "this can actually be a romance with a HEA ending" and that is a first for me with Kitts' book.
This modern telling of classic fairy tales is wholly unique and interesting. Each story has it's own love gone wrong tale of woe that finds redemption in the end as in all fairy tales. I was surprised to find how quickly I read thorough the whole book. I've read other books by Ms. Kitt that has given me much food for fantasy thoughts and this one did too..
A book for mature readers; x rated. Selena Kitt creates characters so likeable you feel you should be able to keep tabs on them like you would your friends. Sometimes the connection with the classic fairy tale gets a bit stretched but the stories are still engaging. Her sex writing is much better than 50 shades but I was more interested in how the story was going to play out rather than how many orgasms were had. Each story felt like its own experience, not written by a formula-though the fairy tale formula is still present. I would recommend to romantics looking for a bunch of quick story reads.
I would like to give 3.5 stars. This is not a bad book, but I didn't like it as much as I had hoped. I'm a huge fan of fairy tale retellings, and I do appreciate all the genuinely happy endings (tbh, I always expected everything to go sideways and gut surprised by the nice endings). But I hate contemporary stuff, so a lot of this was just morphed into a genre I really can't stand. That is a me problem and not the books fault. Her ideas were good and if you like contemporary space and retellings, this might be just the book for you
What a ride. While all of the stories are sick a clever take on the old tales we all have grow to know and love i would say not all of them are everyone’s cup of tea. I enjoyed most of the adaptations and the way in which the author took each story, mainly I loved the Hansel and Gretel story! Little red rising hood was honestly just brilliant, oooh and Beauty and the beast was so cool too. Yep recommend If you’ve been looking for a true modern spicy adaptation of your childhood crushes.

Not your childhood fairy tales! A new Naughty Spin on the stories we have all heard a million times as children. I would considered this to be rated R or HBO type of naughty. Not as intense as I was expecting but it was well written and Im glad the wording wasnt disgusting like erotic books tend to be. Not a bad series. Good to get you started if you know what I mean *wink*
Here we have a rewritten book of a lot of the most well known fairy tales, BUT here they are VERY HOT AND SEXUAL. I'm afraid I can only give it a 3 , as they are all an alright read but with pretty good HEA 😘😘😘
It was a quick read. It’s a series of short stories. No depth to the characters. Each story is loosely based on a fairytale-very loosely based. If you want a quick mindless read with no substance then this is a book for you.
It was a fantastic set of stories. Putting such a twist on the childhood classics. Read them all back to back on a long plane flight. Will definitely read some more of her work.
There are some good ones but there are some bad ones too
It's mostly half decent. There are a couple good ones but for the most part it's a pass. The sex is repetitive. And the scenes are mostly interchangeable.
I found myself progressively less interested as I continued through the book. I am glad Wendy was the last one for I am not sure I could handle another. Only 3 stars because it was interesting to see which and how the characters would match up to the original fairy tale.
Modern fairy tales with wicked twist does say what it is about in this collection.
Every fairytale is a stand alone novelle based on a fairytale but totally different now. One more wicked as the other. Can't tell to much, because I don't want to give away spoilers.
dnf the whole series because it turned oddly transphobic. i won't be finishing this. beauty was a great, solid story, but then the writer had to throw in a person whose gender confused one of the main characters in a retelling of sleeping beauty, and it was done poorly; she eventually just called the person 'he.' disrespectful.
i love erotica and romance, but we have got to stop with the cisheteronormativity.
