Enjoy the very best of beloved 19th Century preacher Robert Murray McCheyne in this short collection of quotes. Despite not living to see his 30th birthday, Robert Murray McCheyne’s impact on the spiritual life of Scotland was remarkable. His love for the Lord Jesus and his love for God’s people made his short life an immensely fruitful one. This short collection of quotes gives readers a taste of the insight he had into spiritual things, and the clarity with which he expressed these truths. Each short quote contains goodness which will nourish the soul. They are split into categories such as Prayer, Love and Sorrow and Suffering . These quotes will speak to believers at any point in their spiritual walk. Also included are a short biography of Robert Murray McCheyne written by his contemporary, James Hamilton, and a sermon by McCheyne on verses from the Song of Solomon, a biblical book from which he loved to preach. At the back there is his famous plan for reading the whole Bible in a year, along with his instructions on how to use it and his explanation of why he compiled it.
I bought two copies of this book, one for me (since I hadn't read anything by or about McCheyne in decades) and one to give as a gift. This short volume manages to do a lot, but then again, McCheyne did a lot in a short life of only 29 years. The book consists of a short biography, a series of quotes, a sermon, and McCheyne's Bible reading plan, which is still used by many.
This book contains so much. The first part consists of a little bio about Robert Murray McCheyne. He lived in the 19th century and was a Scottish minister and had a tremendous impact in Scottland despite his short life. I enjoyed reading his many quotes and love that they are categorized under topics. I especially enjoyed the sermon from him on Songs of Solomon in the back of the book and his Bible reading plan that he developed for his congregation. In his sermon, he talks about the lonliness that is felt by the Christian and reminds us that that is a mark of Christ's people. Being a 'lily among thorns' as we are surrounded by those that are wicked and who don't love Christ, it causes great loneliness, and yet we arn't truly alone as we have Christ. I resonate with this so much and have experienced much loneliness because of my faith. This is just a taste of what was in his sermon. This new book holds great treasures from church history and I definitely recommend getting ahold of a copy for your encouragement, conviction, and edification!
This was a short introduction to the life and thought of Robert Murray McCheyne. I loved the section giving us a taste of some of the more memorable McCheyne quotes. And the intro to the RRM Bible reading plan was filled with great instruction on the use of the plan and the pitfalls to avoid. "Few tremble at the Word of God," and McCheyne was a man of the Book. All in all, I enjoyed it. I look forward to reading Bonar's Life and Memoirs of RMM.
