The isolated Outer Banks provide Callie McKinley with the anonymity she needs to start her life over as a restaurant manager at the Holiday House Hotel. But, the serenity of Callie's new world is shattered when a skull is uncovered in a dune outside of the hotel. Then Callie's head waitress disappears and the police don't seem too concerned. As Callie searches for clues to her friend's whereabouts, she finds herself poking her nose into a police investigation that reveals more questions than answers.
Wendy Howell Mills enjoys writing unique mysteries set in an eclectic, island locale. She lives on a tropical island off the southwest coast of Florida, where she spends her time writing, enjoying her young son and dodging hurricanes.
There were many interesting elements to this story, but I feel like the mermaid portion of it was underplayed and unimportant until the last four pages of the book. It also got uncomfortable with how often the book unnecessarily mentioned being in the Outer Banks and that the main character drives a Jeep. Neither seemed particularly important to the plot (I understand the setting is important but it became very repetitive and not very descriptive). All this being said I did enjoy reading it, even if it was not what i expected.

Cute little mystery- was looking forward to others in the series but there is only one more. Not sure the author is going to continue the series as both books were written several years ago. :( I am a little disappointed by that!
