I really didn’t enjoy this at first. I struggled to get into it. I got confused by the different characters - e.g. who had been assigned what role in the play. I think this wasn’t helped by the fact that I was quite busy in Luderitz when I started reading it. I was reading it very sporadically, often coming back to the book mid-way through a chapter. I reccomend having chunks of time to read it in.
What is great about this book however, is that it builds and builds and builds. So whilst I wasn’t that invested at first, the tension and plot and relationships and characters became super interesting and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I definitely needed patience for this one! I loved it by the end. Love the rich characters and themes touched upon.
It would hit better reading it a second time too (I re-read the 1st chapter just before I read the final chapter and that was great to contextualise everything).
I reaally think this should be made into a stylised thriller-esque film where tension builds and builds. E.g. have a song motif (thinking ‘Jaws’ music) that underscores the beginning of the film quietly/is hinted at that makes the audience feel unsettled, so that even in seemingly dull moments conflict and tension is foreshadowed. Think ‘Conclave’ X ‘Midsommar’
