Torn between infatuation, lust, denial and playing wifey, the only thing Mo knows for sure is that she's been through hell, survived nine years, three miscarriages, numerous flings, heated arguments and a few knock-down drag-out fights only to realize she is further deep in love and more confused than ever. Come join national best-selling author Keisha Ervin as she spins a classic tale about loving someone so much you lose yourself, only to find in the end that what you thought was real love was just a game.
Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Keisha Ervin is a prolific writer and devoted mother. Her success has drawn much deserved attention to herself and her hometown. She is the author of the National Best-Sellers Chyna Black, Me & My Boyfriend, Mina's Joint and Hold U Down, as well as the novel Torn and the short story After the Storm, featured in the Street Love anthology.
This book follows the ridiculous love affair of Quan and Mo. The book starts with Mo at home waiting up for her boyfriend of 9 years Quan. It’s the middle of the night and he is running the streets again. That is the central pattern of the book. Quan dogging Mo out and her allowing it. This book is the perfect urban novel to get the blood pressure going.
Mo has been in love with Quan since she was 15 years old. Honestly the girl didn’t know anything but Quan and he took advantage of the situation to the fullest. He was physically and emotional abusive to everyone. (I mean everyone including his side chick)
I screamed, I yelled and I even cried as I read what Quan put Mo through. The entire book you’re praying the man got struck by lightening he was soo terrible.
But the second love interest is Boss the man who will ultimately hold Mo down as long as she will have them. Boss is a bad boy but he doesn’t run the streets. He is confident and poised but he knows what he wants and that is Mo.
Over a year, of back and forth Mo finally breaks things off with Quan and gives Boss a chance and yay 😀!!!
Unfortunately, because this is a lot more predictable than my typical reads if I say much more I’ll give away major spoilers. All I will say is it so different reading this now as an adult then when I was a teen. I learned a lot about myself and how I’ve grown as a reader. Some might even say I am a bit "Torn" 🥲
BRIEF SUMMARY Mo has been in a relationship with Quan for nine years and through out that time she has dealt with his lies, cheating, the miscarriages, and drama. But with all that is going on, she finds herself still in love and torn when it comes to Quan. But will she ever leave and find happiness?
THOUGHTS
The words that came to mind when I read Mo and Quan's relationship while it unraveled, toxic, Ike and Tina with a lot of dysfunction in the mix. I felt so sorry for Mo but she wasn't perfect and innocent either. The first half of the story was basically dealing with Mo and Quan's relationship and I just want to say, it was draining. I felt like I was going through the different emotions with Mo's dilemmas. Quan was 85% jerk and 15% likable at times, but their drama was made for a good read. The second half was Mo's revaluation and I loved it. I don't want to give it away but she got the wake up call she needed and I loved her happy ending. And as for Quan, God don't like ugly and karma is mean, it came, it saw and it got Quan. Sometimes the book will make you cringe at the things that happen, but it's also good story telling.
I loved Mo's best friends and can't wait to read Mina's story. I love all the other characters except, Sherry. I also did not respect Cam, Mo's brother. He should always have his sister's back and I don't feel he did.
I love me some Keisha Ervin, and I can't wait to read more of her books I have on stand by. Good job to her on the story telling of Torn.
Storyline: GOOD Intimacy: VERY GOOD Enjoyment: GOOD
I could read this novel fifty five and a half times and I will still never understand how Mo was so torn about Quan. Their horrible relationship didn't seem so confusing, it was as clear as a beautiful sunny California day that they should run in opposite directions. This novel is way too long and overflowed with a surplus of redundant unnecessary scenarios. I could see how the length and nonessential circumstances could be entertaining if the reader is torn and confused right along with the characters but I wasn't. Don't get me wrong, this book is good but it is a tedious read. Readers have to endure 265 pages of solely arguing, cheating, and beating. Mo and Quan constantly fight, hurt each other, break up, and then run back to each other. I wanted to scream "Leave him already!!!", and throw the book across the room. I've seen women who are torn, I've been torn but with Mo that wasn't torn, that was just stupid, low self esteem, and sad to say, the yearning and wanting to be hurt. Mo has every reason to leave and not one reason to stay. She has somewhere else to go, has a college degree, has money, and they have no living children together. She has no motivation to be torn, it seems she is just used to being treated badly and loves him more than she loves herself so she chooses to stay in an unhealthy space. In serious cases like these, women need to be taught what real love is, how it shouldn't feel and reminded of what women really deserve, and of their self worth. Soon comes a young man named Boss and that is exactly what he wants to teach and remind her. She is currently engaged to Quan and busy being "torn" so she doesn't give Boss a chance. Eventually after page 265 of course, she begins a friendship with Boss and this is when this novel takes a much needed and anticipated turn. Boss' character is the unexpected star of the show. I'm sure every reader couldn't help but fall in love with him and want the best for him. Sadly, before long Mo runs him away. She is so damaged from her relationship with Quan that she doesn't know how to love and receive love properly. She is too busy not trusting him and punishing him from Quan's mistakes. Around this point is where the book gets even better.
This novel is the epitome of an emotional roller coaster. It is already hard to read about a young girl getting beat and getting her heart broken by the person she loves most in the world but to read about her continually losing babies is simply heart wrenching. She blames the death of her daughter on Quan because he was out cheating when she needed him to take her to the emergency room. On top of that, he has a baby on the side with Sherry which only pours salt on the wound yet, that isn't even enough to get her to wake up and smell the coffee and finally leave him for good. Extremely sad.
I enjoyed reading this book so much. I cried with Mo through the loss of Heaven, and cheered her when she destroyed Quans stuff! I couldn't put the book down at all. I even cried when she said she didn't want to leave him because she was afraid that would mean losing the reakationship with his mom. That was so touching. Boss was the BEST! I think we all want a man like him! And A lot of people talked about Sherry, but I got to hand it to her, she played the game just right. She had me compleatly fooled. I thought she was dumb and in love! I was shocked the way her story unfolded. I wish there would be a second part to follow Quan in his own journey. Will he see Lil' Quan again, will he kill west? I feel there's so much more that can be told. As long as Mo keeps her life that the Torn ended with.
This book was awesome, the way the story was told, you wouldn't believe it was fiction. She takes you with her characters and help you to actually live what the characters are going through for the moment. The sex scenes play in your mind the love attraction boils your blood. You can tell Keisha Ervin has a natural God give urban talent. Much luv and shot out to Keisha I will always be one of your #1 die hard fan
this was a good book, i read it about 5 times. It was so realistic cheating and betrayal are things people go though everyday. This is one of my favorite books
For the culture I had to rerun this back! Its such a classic! What’s urban fiction without TORN? Hands down classic. The perfect toxic love story. Boss came in and was that one. Can’t nobody cover for him! Boss is timeless! Boss character has aged very well in the game!
The book I am reading is called Torn this book has many love hate relationships and dramatic scenes in it it expresses a sense of reality. It's based of a couples relationship and how they overcome the worst in life together. It reminds me of when me and my girlfriend was together and all of the things that happened with us they are very similar because we were both just like the main characters we were devious and we both were torn between lust, infatuation and survived a few fist fights.
The main characters of the story is monsieur but everyone calls her Mo she's very outgoing and likes playing her cards right she usually goes to a local hairshop in pawnline in which she met her future bf Quan but they call him Q who was also her brothers friend/Hb he was persistent and never gave up trying to get with mo. But they both eventually came to realize they were confused and both deceptive when she finally accepted him in her life.
The story took place right here in the city of Saint Louis, Missouri, Pinelawn in the summer in places where they sold drugs and women often sold there bodies. There were times when people would sit on the outside of the gas station and do hair it was the "hood" and that corner was the only corner in which they could live said Q.
Through nine years of being together They went from three miscarriages from cheating and being disloyal to fist fighting to making passionate love both were confused and didnt want to let each other go they were totally in love and getting married. But what mo doesnt know is that there is a secret and she doesnt know who's keeping it are what it is. She learned a lesson and it was loving someone so much that you begin to lose yourself
I feel that the author tried to make the scenes in the book to be very dramatic and they were. There were times I wanted it to hurry up and get to the point that the author was about to make because it was just that good her details were okay but there could have been more in some parts were she could have included a little more details to there fights. She didn't have a fast paced book but it got to the point.
I believe that this book is suppose to relate to other people's relationships and it not only takes you out of your own but puts you in someone else's I think the author wants you to compare and contrast the relationship. The book makes you step out of your chracter and realize that every women and men have there cheating days. For me this book had a lot of personal connections because my brother was just like Mo's boyfriend Q.
As a young women coming of age relationships are important to me Advice from others play a huge part in my Decisions as I stumbled upon a book named “Torn". I was excited to read it. The book chronicles the ups & downs of relationships such as the main character Mo and her boyfriend Quan. I rate this book highly and is a must read for teens. It’s a must read because of the drama, how it shows the cons and pros of relationships and fairy tall e ending.
The drama in “Torn” keeps you excited such as the sideline hoes, baby mamma drama and the fights. Some nights When Quan doesnt come home Mo sits up all night waiting for him and then a fight starts. Then when mo discovers Quan had a baby on her she and the baby mom gets in a fight. This drama keeps you in the book.
The book shows the cons and pros of a relationship. It shows what will happen it you stay in stressful relationship or cheat n your partner. The pros are you feel love you will get money if your boyfriend is rich but also how relationships sometimes end and you feel lonely.
The fairy tale ending is worth the wait. At the end Mo finally founds her love and has the kids she always wanted.
Mo seemed like every women in america who loves a man that doesn't even deserve her love. Everytime she lost their baby(ies) I became heart broken because she wanted to be a mother so bad. This book is dangerous. It had me memorized for three days. I was up all night and going to work very tired cause I just couldn't put it down. I was drawn to Mo's and Quan's story. I was very emotional right along with Mo. ...Talk about an emotional roller coaster!!! My heart went out to her. Quan... such a dog!!! But, he had me fooled for a while too. On some parts I felt like Mo, "maybe they could work it out even though he didn't deserve her"! It was just something about him (LOL). But, Boss... OMG is all I can say (Read the book)!!! I don't want to ruin the story for those who haven't read it yet. So, I will stop right there. All I got to say is Keisha Ervin is the Queen of Urban Fiction Novels, NO DOUBT! This book has sealed the deal for me. She has 5 books that are FIRE!!!! I love her work!
Quan and Mo's toxic relationship was driving me bananas. It drama after drama after drama. Quan was selfish and insecure. He did Mo dirty in every sense of the word. She dealt with so much especially with Sherry that I couldn't believe it. It was like a never ending cycle. Then one day the unthinkable happens and Mo is fired up to the point of no return. This leads her on a journey she could have never imagined. Although through that journey she still had past hang ups and indecrestions. Mo struggle alot to find herself but with the help of Delicious and Mina and some good good Mo did alright. I commend the author on character development in this story and the way it was portrayed. This is 2nd on of her books I was recommended and have yet to be disappointed.
this book is awesome! I read it over and over! Its basically about a young girl growing up in the hood who had her ups and downs. She met a guy and he took her thru everything in her life but at the end became stronger and became a better person! and she ended up with twins and stuff and she was so happy like i know every thing that went on in this book and its real like this stuff do happen in real like now and i know some one thats going through the same stuff. and i know girls my age thats going through the same thing now and im only 16.and the same day i went ans got the book i read it in one day cause it was so good.
I pulled this book from my bestfriend's shelf. I would have spent money on it had I known how good it was. I was going through a bad break up at the time and this book was everything I needed. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me angry. Ms. Ervin told a great story and I love the way that it ended. It was so close to reality for me and now I reading everything I deal with a bad relationship. It's on my shelf as a favorite.
If your looking for a book to grasp you emotionally this book is it.Torn by Keisha Ervin. Keisha is a really good writer, two of the books i read by her are among my favorites. This book was really good. The book was a huge but worth every page, becuase i just wanted more. The characters where real, the setting, everything. An overall great book.
VERY GOOD BOOK READ IT IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS . THAT'S HOW GOOD IT WAS I JUST COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. THE BOOK WAS GOOD BUT AT TIME YOU MIGHT GET TIRED OF THE MAIN CHARACTER BECAUSE SHE KEPT MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. SOME MIGHT APPRECIATE THAT BECAUSE SOMETIMES PART OF BEING HUMAN IS MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
OMG. THIS WAS LIKE THE BEST LOVE STORY EVER. FROM THE BEGINING I KNEW HOW BOSS TALKED TO MO I KNEW IN MY HEART THATS WHO WOULD HEAL HER BROKEN HEART. THIS WAS A VERY WELL RITTEN LOVE STORY. I READ THIS TWICE ALREADY BUT I KNOW IT WILL BE MORE THAN THAT CAUSE THIS WAS THAT GOOD
This came as a recommendation from my Book lover friends and they certainly didn't let me down this time either. Love this book! Has to be one of my all time favorites.
"I'm finally putting me first, you know. I'm living for myself for a change. I mean it really feels good to have the weight of negativity off my back." - Mo in Torn
Torn is about a young woman named Monsieur Parthens(Mo). Mo grew up pretty spoiled she has 4 older brothers. She was never told to do chores and was gifted with whatever she wanted. In Torn Mo is 25 and has been with her boyfriend Quan since she was just shy of her 16th Birthday. Quan is 3yrs older than Mo, he lives in the streets but not as a bum. No, Quan is a hustler. For nine years Mo has had to endure Quan's late nights running the streets and cheating ways. But Mo does not feel bad for herself she has done her dirt too and she enjoys living in a million dollar house driving expensive cars and wearing designer clothes all "charged to the game".
When Mo hears the devastating news that one of Quan's jump offs(girl he has sex with) has had a baby. And its Quan's, she goes off. You see Mo has not been able to carry a child to full term. Crushed Mo sets out to get revenge. She then leaves Quan. But this seperation is short lived they both decide that they still love eachother and choose to get back together. This vicious circle of break ups to make ups does not last. Mo finally moves on and finds a new man Zaire(Boss). Boss is 20 and Mo is not feeling the age gap. Boss let's her know up front that he has feelings and age means nothing to him.
When Mo finally gives into a relationship with Boss Quan calls her for help and she goes a running. Has Mo choosen Quan over a new found love that knows how to respect and love a woman? Can Quan get the women he loves back? You have to read to find out!
I think Ms. Ervin did a good job with this book. Torn was a realistic tale of how women in the hood live their lives. Mo was educated yet did not get a job and chose to live off a hustler she was in "stupid love". Stupid love is when you ignore all the wrong when its right in front of your face. Mo wanted to live that life and be the envy of others in her fly house and fly cars. When she could have done so on her own.
My Ratings Characters- Witty and Likable Writing Style- Good Plot/Storyline- Heartbreaking at times But the ending made up for it! Steam Factor- Very Steamy Overall- Good
I'm going back and forth between two and three stars right now and I've opted for three because I'm hoping it's me that took away from the book. I'm fairly sure it was which is why I'm taking this route. I really wish we had the 'half a star' option right now. Keisha Ervin is a GOOD author, as any urban fiction reader knows. I'm not sure if this wasn't what I was expecting or if, more likely, I just wasn't in the right mood or frame of mind for this particular story at this particular moment. The main characters, Mo and Quan, are so utterly realistic you feel like they're actually friends of yours. I don't care who you are but if you're reading urban fiction like this then you've known someone very similiar to Mo and Quan. And Sherry. And Boss. I really like that aspect of the book. That being said, the premise of the story is also as realistic as possible. There are no million dollar hiests that most of us will never see, there is nothing, with the exception of some extravagant living, that could be called unrealistic. It's almost like the author took someones diary and formed a story around it without adding to it, without adding anything unbelievable. That's another thing I liked a lot about that book. This may all sound very boring and uninteresting but it's really not and this is where Ervin being a talented author comes in. The story would almost definitely be boring as hell with almost anyone else. I guess I can't really say I'd recommend this to anyone because I didn't enjoy it enough myself to do that but I can definitely see the potential and I think it's my fault I didn't get everything I could have out of this. :( I don't know that I've ever written such a mixed review. :)
I haven't given a book five stars in a long time! But "Torn" left me so satisfied, it couldn't of gotten anything less then five. First off, the references the author makes to popular songs like "ordinary people" by John Legend and other songs by Beyonce and Jay-z are so subtle and add flavor and humor. Mo was funny and though dumb at times, I had to love her and her friends Mina and delicious. Sherry was the classic side bitch ugh, and Quan. Sadly, I couldn't help it but I loved quan, his love for Mo was strong tho he couldn't get his act together. Boss however touched my heart, that is a good nigga right there. The ending of this book left no lose ends and I think everybody got what they deserved. I feel full. I wish there was more but I'm glad she didn't drag this out with a series. Such a good read. lol I couldn't stop, completed it in one day.
I couldn't get enough of this book from the time I started reading it this morning I couldn't put it down....I am sooooooo happy that Mo found her true happiness at the end with Boss they were really made for each other, besides Chyna Black & Hold U Down this book has by far been one of my fav Keisha Ervin books among others!!!! :) :) :)
