Creating Caring Classrooms is committed to building respectful relationships among students, teachers, and the school community. Through active, engaging, relevant, open-ended activities, students will be encouraged to explore events, ideas, themes, texts, stories, and relationships from different perspectives, and then represent those new understandings in innovative and creative ways.
This book was part of a course about Culturally Responsible Pedagogies for Primary and Junior Teachers in Ontario, Canada. It took at least four weeks to work through all the suggestions and activities so there are plenty in here. Wow where to start? If you ever thought you are helping students feel cared about, there is always something else to use! I am pretty interested in literacy activities and this has plenty of good choices to use. Read this book and you will be a happier Educator. Most of the substantial ideas work for Grades 4-7. I really admire the work these Authors put forth in the book. I wish all Teachers would try them because it is based on the premise that one must get to know every student in a full sense (background, values, ethnicity, interests) whom they teach.

"...The book is useful for any age group and directly relevant for... teachers as part of the current focus on anti-bullying and character education. Many of the activities can be integrated with the regular curriculum, especially for language arts, drama, and visual art." - ETFO Voice Magazine
