H. B. Gilmour was a bestselling author of children's books. She grew up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with her mother and the extended family and fondly remembered writing her very first poem for Arbor Day when she was just eight years old. As a teenager, she moved to Florida to live with her father. She attended college there and then moved back to New York City.

Gilmour’s first publishing job was at E.P. Dutton. In 1964 she joined Bantam Books where she worked as copywriter, editor, and copy chief and as an associate director of marketing. She was married to Bruce Gilmour in 1968. She had a child, Jessica, with him in 1970. They were divorced in 1972. Her first novel "The Trade", a trashy paperback about the publishing business, was published in 1969.

She wrote novelizations (including Saturday Night Fever) and children's books (including Muppets books) while working full-time at Bantam and raising a child on her own. She published her second original novel "So Long, Daddy" in 1985. The artwork for the dust jacket of the hardcover release includes a photo of her daughter, Jessica. Her third novel was "Ask Me If I Care", a book about a teenage girl who gets in with the wrong crowd.

In 1992 she joined the book division at Scholastic, leaving in 1995 to pursue writing full-time. She focused her energy on books for "tweens" and children which is what gave her the most joy.

She met John Johann, whom she would later marry, in 1992. They later moved to Cornwallville in upstate New York where she happily tended to the garden she never had in the city until her death. She died on June 21, 2009 of pneumonia due to complications from lung cancer. She is survived by her husband John, daughter Jessica, stepchildren Wendy and John, Jr. and step-grandchildren Reef, Riley, John Jr. and Jasmine.

The twins’ sweet sixteen is coming up, which means their Initiation is coming up too. They finally have a plethora of books to study (high time! though they only got two months at most with them, other than that handy-dandy The Little Book of Spells…), and they’ll need all the knowledge they can cram in these two months before their month-long initiation.
You heard that right – their initiation is a month long process of them being watched through the Situator spell as they actively use their magic to help those in need of help around them. They’ve always meddled to help others, but this brings it to a whole new level. Now, they’re actively applying new magic spells and herbs to situations in school, taking point in addressing problems they see around them for friends and schoolmates at large. But since it’s Cam and Alex, it won’t be so simple: someone is trying to keep them at odds and angry with each other, and even discourage them from going through the final Initiation ritual on Coventry Island. The twins are on their own for all this, too: no help allowed from any other witch or warlock, they can’t even ask any other witch or warlock except their Initiation Master Lady Rhianna any questions (not that Rhianna would be inclined to answer them anyways).
After they sniff out the interloper and get that squared away, it is only a matter of time before they are summoned for the two-day final initiation aspects on Coventry Island. As usual, Coventry still has some secrets to reveal, and over-the-top drama continues to ensue.
The idea behind this book is solid: tests for Cam and Alex to pass before being initiated as full witches on Coventry, including a whopper of a “final exam” which will truly test their ability to help anyone at all, even those who least deserve it.
The execution, however, is as over-the-top as the rest of the series has been. Why did it take as long as it did for the twins to figure out someone was messing with them in the beginning of the book, during their first task? Their second task was a jury-style grilling of knowledge (knowledge which, let’s be honest, has mostly been come by through cramming spell book study time these past two months), and their third task, while noble in intent – to be of service to one person (each) they think is not deserving of forgiveness at all – ends up being quite ridiculous in execution. And that is Add to that the real-life relatable “drama” about worrying not only about getting to their own sweet sixteen birthday bash on time, but foremost that it would be a dud since adoptive mom Emily was planning it to take place at home. At HOME of all places! Can you imagine?? The horror!! Oh, I can’t handle the teen angst drama of a sweet sixteen party not being the party of the twins’ (wildly different) dreams!
You know what, I’m going to stop myself there. I’m not going to chew into this book. I think I did a sufficient job of that for Split Decision. Instead, I offer my final judgment on this series as a whole, followed by my typo/inconsistency section.
While I think I can see the appeal for teens/pre-teens to read this series (magic! boy drama! secret witchy world! super-powered teens!), it does not hold up to an adult reader at all. I read this as a teen, and I suppose I liked it well enough to have read it all and kept it, but I have to say I’m fishing for reasons to keep it after this read, and most likely won’t. The entire series suffers from a bad case of too many plot holes, world-building issues, characterization issues, general inconsistencies and over-the-top melodramatics and contrived situations (among other issues) for it to be worth my while to re-read, or even hold onto to pass along to the next generation or refer to anyone else for that matter. It’s very much a casual-consumption read-it-and-forget-it series, one which will not stick around in my brain very long. The entire time I was reading it, nothing came back to me from when I read it nearly 15 years ago. NOTHING. (I have books I read that long ago, or longer, which I either have not read since or only very recently, and even for those I do remember some snippets.) And that is probably about what I’ll remember about it in, oh, maybe 15 days from now. I’m glad I’m done with this re-read, and can move on to better things. At least I can say I completed it, and can give an accurate assessment of the whole. In reality, every single book should get a star knocked off for my actual rating; the ratings as they are and as I will leave them are more reflective of within this series alone how each book rates compared to its fellows.
If you’re looking for a fluff, forgettable, magick-infused read, this could be what the doctor ordered. If you want anything more than that, don’t even bother with this series.

Typo/Inconsistencies/Say what?! moments:
So when replica girl shows up,” – page 56 – missing opening quotation marks

Referring to Ileana: “the beautiful and vain young witch who had given away her childhood to care for and protect Apolla and Artemis. – page 103 – Except…she didn’t really do anything for them after they were given to their Protectors until they were reunited the summer before their 15th birthday, at least so far as we were told. Karsh did more, with his limited trips to visit them in dreams and be a general lurker. Ileana was a very hands-off sort of witch if she could get away with it, by every indication we were given even after she came to play an active part in their lives.

Page 90: Cam checks the calendar and sees that the full moon in October occurs on the 16th. But on page 210, which occurs on October 31st, she looks up at the sky: “There was a full moon tonight.” This is impossible – too little time between full moons; the moon can barely disappear in that time, let alone reappear within it! I noticed the prominence and plethora of full moons occurring at symbolic times throughout the series, and chalked it up to (acceptable) coincidence, but this just does not work and cannot be excused, period.

I really enjoyed reading this one. It had been a while since I read last one. I wasn't sure if wanted to keep reading the series but I really liked this one a lot. To bad there won't be any more for while. I heard there making a Disney movie of it. That would awesome. I hope they do well by the books. We'll see!

Destiny’s Twins (Updated)
Cam has read Emily’s mind that she plans to throw the twins a surprise party for their birthday. The date and location hasn’t been decided so it might not be on Halloween. But Alex says she’d rather die. Cam tells her to get over it. She and Emily want this. There’s another big event coming in Coventry. Alex and Camron will take their W A T’s (With Aptitude Tests). This is the event that Alex is most concerned with. The test will run all October with 48 hours of tests and ceremonies on Coventry.

Only Cameron doesn’t seem to be excited about it. Maybe because of what happened on their last trip to Coventry. The twins found on that trip that they’re supposed to take over their father’s dynasty. Now headed by their uncle. But Alex wonders to herself if she even wants to run a dynasty. Cam looks at the book of spells on Alex’s bed and looks for a spell to forget Shane who Alex told her not to sweat. She then notices the digital clock. It’s October 1st. Their initiation has begun.

The last day they were on Coventry the rules were explained to them. Ileana is chosen to be their Initiation Master. Each day of their birth month every choice they made big, small, trivial, serious would be monitored and evaluated. They’d also have to know 100 spells. The one hundred will be variations on the basics: Truth, Travel, and Transformation. Also they can’t get any assist from any witch or warlock.

There every act must include one or all of the following virtues: Wisdom, Intuition, Trust, Courage, and Honesty. The more they use these the more stones they’ll get. Each stone is worth one point. They must each earn 100 stones. Their choices must be seeped in sympathy and empathy. There decisions made in a spirit of kindness, compassion, justice, and love. Most importantly it’s the time to come to the aid of their peers when they’re in need.

They can use magick. Their memory of spells, of herbs, crystals, and incantations will be honed. Illeana advises they bone up on the entire contents of the Little Book of Spells. But its their actions, when where and how they use their gifts that will decide the outcome. Part 2 is the Q and A part. The Elders can ask anything from alchemy, to transformation and transmutation, to scared stone, to the knowledge of history, ingredients, incantations, purposes, and powers of every spell and when and how to use them. The Elders will vote on how well they do and if they make the grade.

There’s a part three but Rhiana doesn’t specify what this will be about. If they fail they can take the test over, but each time they take it there powers will weaken. If they pass they’ll increase and they’ll be welcomed into the society as equals. The next day, Alex barges into Cameron’s room and in a twisted rage tells her to drop her spell book. It’s Cam (I think) that throws the book and Alex makes it fly back at her and she has to duck to keep it from hitting her. Also, there’s something off about Cam. There’s a chill coming from her, a odor, and she uncharacteristically hurts Emily’s feelings by telling her Alex doesn’t want the party, and calling her *mommy*.

The next morning, the twins try to avoid each other. Alex comes in the room and starts throwing the books from Coventry away and tells Cam she’s on her own. She’s not taking the initiation test. At school, Alex sees Cam flirting with Cade but a minute ago she was in the lunchroom with the Six Pack. Alex notices that the imposter smells like jinson weed and neetles, there’s cold coming off her, and she’s not wearing Cam’s sun necklace.

Illena and Rhianna see this happening and right away Illena wants to warn the twins and thinks it’s Thantos. Rhianna tho says it will test the twins intuition and she says they won’t interfere. At school, the twins come up with a plan to check in with each other telepathically. The clone shows up in Alex’s lab and gives her the message that Cade says he’s done with her. She gets Alex to say that she’s so mad at her that she won’t be coming to Coventry. Then she knows that it doesn’t want her to take the Initiation.

Cam later says she would have come and busted the clone but she got sent a note from Alex that she was a lousy mind reader and she didn’t need her help. Alex tells Cam it wasn’t her but now they know what the clone’s motive is. Cam confesses she doesn’t know if she really wants to do the Initiation because she’s not really sure about *the benefits* of enhanced powers. The twins come up with a plan to flush the clone out. They’ll pretend to have a fight and one will storm out of the room and slam the door. The other will stay behind as “bait”.

Cam would be “the bait”. Alex will be the trap. Alex will slip into Dylan’s room into the bathroom that linked his room with thiers and wait for the clone to show up. Then Alex will open the door forcing the other twin to come clean. But they have to do it without the fake intercepting their thoughts. Alex suggests they try what she tried in class. They can imagine an iron door with a peephole. Then hold on to their charms. They try it and it seems to work. Alex wants to use a transformation spell but Cam reminds her that the spell doesn’t work on humans. Only trackers can trans-mutate people.

The twins try the spell on each other and each make each other itch and explode with red welts. Luckily they’re able to reverse the spell. The twins don’t have to *pretend* to fight. After dinner (and gong back to their rooms) they argue over the cover up Cam came up with (that they’d had a leaf fight) and Emily asking if Cam’s friends had a party where do they think they should have it (and Cam wanting to tell her the truth that they know about the surprise party). Interestingly Alex doesn’t want to hurt Emily’s feelings.

The clone burst into Alex’s room and demands her books back. The clone starts to burn the book Illena suggested. Cam looks into her eyes and knows what to do. She starts to recite The Truth Spell. Then she adapts the spell and she sees it’s a glamor and it starts to lift. Alex at the same time gets a vision of Thantos ordering a robbed young witch (and casting a spell over her) to chip away at the twins. She sees the girls face and then her face transforms into her face and Cam’s. She knocks Dylan out cold with a spell and then bursts into the room and sees Amarylis scorched.

Amarylis tries to get in Cam and Alex’s heads (mostly Cam’s) but causing insecurity and doubts about the guys they like (Cade, Jason, Shane). She even tries to taunt them to use violence against her. Then reminds them of the initiation. Alex says that might work on Cam but not Alex (since she’s not taking the test). Amaryllis seems to be ok with this because at least she’s gotten one twin not to take the test and that might be enough to satisfy Thantos. Alex starts to confess and realizes she’s going against all the virtues they’re supposed to be showing, but Amaryllis won’t stop trying to push their buttons.

Alex realizes tho that through all the attitude she’s scared of what Thantos will do to her (and Cam hears it too). She hopes the twins will give her compassion and wonders what she can do to soften them up. She makes them promise her something to tell them in return something about Shane. She says Shane has no loyalty to Thantos -and neither does his family-, The twins promise they’ll give her safe transport back to Coventry and Alex says she’ll keep up the deception until she can get out of Cailmoore. Amaryllis says Shane’s family didn’t keep him out. They just keep a low profile from all the sucking up to Thantos that Shane does, but Thantos does not trust Shane.

They use the Transporter Spell and send Amaryllis back and it takes until midnight. The twins afterward wonder why Shane’s family don’t want the DuBaeurs to know about Shane’s trying to sweat Thantos. Cam lays in bed worrying about some of the things Amaryllis says and then has a thought. Their initiation will be on the night of the full moon (when they were born). Which is on the 16th. At school, Beth and Bree argue over a new girl Nadine whose on outsider. Beth is trying to defend her. Bree says they aren’t asking her to sit with them. Cam is over Bree’s immaturity. “Skeevy” Stevie heads toward Nadine’s table with a tray of food and pretends he’s going to slip. Picturing a daisy and with the assist of Beth’s silver bracelet they preform a “Turning Lemon Into Lemonade” (as Illeana calls it) spell. Bree then gets up and invites Nadine to sit with them. “Skeevy” takes off shaking with humiliation and rage. Alex then taps into his emotions and feels the hurt and pain he’s feeling.

Back on Coventry, Rhiana awards the twins points. For waylaying the bully in the cafeteria, Apolla earns two stones. For feeling the bad boy's pain, three for Artemis. For working together, two more each. And for gloating —" Rhianna upended the boxes and shook a stone out of each — "that's a minus two." Miranda and Illeana press her on the date of the Initiation. She says it’ll be on the 30th and the 31st. Miranda tries to plead with her to make it on the day of the full moon because of Emily’s surprise party but Rhianna just says they’ll find a way to deal with it.

All week, the twins tune into their classmates needs. The 16th comes and then the 23rd no one comes for them. Their talents improve and they create new incantations. Alex has three visions. Alex befriends Stevie and gets him to apologize to Nadine. He and Nadine fall in love shortly after. Beth is acting weird and suggests that Cam and Alex stay over while her mom goes on a business trip. She’s way to hyper about it. Cam finds out Emily is getting them out of the house so she can throw this super lavish costume party at their house. Cam thinks it’s absurd but she doesn’t tell Beth she knows.

At the mall, they run into Ileana who tells them it’s time. Well not exactly time. She gives them until midnight so she can shop, but the twins are tired of waiting. They get Amarylis to take their place for 2 days and then leave Beth with Boris -who knows how to cast a forgetting spell- and they all head off to Coventry. Back at Coventy, Miranda has set up a space for the twins and made it nice and cozy. Sersee tho tries to bait Cameron to use magic on her, but Cam resist and apologizes to her instead. Afterwards, Rhianna shows up briefly and goes over how the Inituation will go with them. The twins have questions and she answers a few. She tells Artemis it’s their choose what they do afterwards. She says she knows about Shane but tells Cam Karsh answered all her questions in his journal.

(Sersee told her she didn’t know anything. Shane and Lord Thantos are sworn enemies). Rhina tells them to stay inside until the Initiation unless they want to be sent home. On the day of the Initiation Shane comes by and Cam acts like she’s in a trance. Artemis is able to read his heavily locked down thoughts and he asks “What does it matter to you? He’s done more harm to you than anyone.

The first part of the test seems to focus on healing and forgiveness. The twin’s answers (Cam’s) start off a little shaky but the more they answer the more than remember and the more they start to work together -which impresses The Elders-. Cam and Alex are also asked to use the skills that come naturally to the other. This one is a little harder. Rhianna asks them for the last part of the tests to name someone they didn’t think deserved forgiveness. Alex and Cam answer telepathically to each other. Alex says Thantos. Cam says Shane. Rhianna or course hears them and tells them to find a way to serve to them.

Alex has a vision of some pages from a hollowed-out book Karsh had. It says In every generation, an Antayus will cause the death of a DuBaer son. Then they get it. Shane wasn’t at the initiation and neither was Thantos. Shane must be going to kill Thantos. That’s why Shane’s been trying to get close to Thantos. They get to Crailmore and find Thantos and Shane in the middle of a heated battle. The twins are able to get Shane and Thantos’s swords away, but Shane turns on the twins when he finds out they and not Thantos are the head of the Dubaer line. Alex turns Shane’s sword into a scythe and tells him since their *female* and the curse is just on *males* killing them won’t fulfill the curse.

Rhianna informs them that they’ve (DuBaers) have saved the life of an Antayus and thus broken the Antayus curse. The Elders come forward and tell of the good the twins have done separately and together on and off the island. The deeds go back to childhood. The twins are put over the decision what to do with Thantos and they decide he can return to Crailmoore but he’s sentenced to be ignored. At first, he thinks he’s gotten off light but then one by one Miranda, Illena, and the twins turn their backs on him and he slinks out of the courtroom.

They use the Traveler’s Spell and are in home in town for all their guest to yell “SURPRISE!” and “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Even Elx’s attitude has changed and she’s pyched. Emily’s really gone all out! Everyone is in costume. People think the twins are because their still in their Coventry robes but they’re not. The party has a circus theme with one tent decorated with sunburst (made of soccer balls) This one is called “Cam’s Soccer League”. The other has silver stars and crescent moons and is called “Alex’s Hard Rock Café”. Lucinda is there and so is Evan. Brice Stanley, Illena, and Miranda also show up at the party. Dave and Emily immediately know who she is but Cam does a spell that makes them forget. (I liked the tv movie better where she meets them and they all just get along).

My Thoughts:
It was a good ending but I think Thantos got let off too lightly. I think I could live with being ignored. Maybe not kill him but at least take Crailmore and the company away from him. I thought banishment sounded like a good punishment. Actually bought Shane and Thantos should have been banished. I’m not sure why the Elder’s felt like Shana has been dealt with adequately. He really wasn’t dealt with at all.

But my favorite part of this by far was party. EMILY DID THAT! I always liked TV-Movie Emily better. TV MOVIE Emily was sweet! Book Emily was… She just always seemed kind of uptight. Especially to Alex. But she kind of won me over in this book. I LOVE ATTENTION TO DETAIL and it was all there from the tents, to the music, to the foods in the tents. She even had a sense of humor about not cooking any of the foods and just overseeing that they were a good fit. I might have even liked this version of the party better than the tv-movie version. Not that I didn’t love that one too! I don’t even like big social events and I would have taken either one of these Halloween parties. And might I just add that I loved the ending music for the party on the TV-Movie version.

Now as for end, I wasn’t quite sure why the twins didn’t want Emily and Dave to meet their mother. This was also done slightly better on the tv-movie. Cam didn’t want to hurt Emily’s feelings but Emily was like love is infinite. We can always make more. Just because you want to give some to someone else doesn’t mean you take any from me. Wasn’t TV-MOVIE Emily the colest mom in the whole universe?!

This was a great end to a great series. The suspense, character development, and unexpected twists were superb. The ending was satisfying and nearly flawless. I highly recommend this series to its intended fifth-grade audience as well as anyone looking for a magical read. I am genuinely sad to be leaving behind some vivid characters whom I feel I have truly come to know, appreciate, and love throughout the past ten books. Farewell, Twitches! Until we meet again...

T*Witches by Randi Reisfeld Filled with
Drama and Love
By: Teagan Harrison
There are so many books out there to be enjoyed, however the book called, T*Witches by Randi
Reisfeld with a total of 224 pages is a book about two twin sisters named Cam and Alex. They
live in two different societies where their just regular people with regular problems, and the other
which their on an island called Coventry Island where people are witches and warlocks. They
both live a regular and secret life. The twin sisters have reunited after separated at birth and are
witches as well, and they are figuring out who they want to be. In the book, Cam and Alex get
into many arguments and fights towards the begging of the book, but they don’t know the
reason behind it. After hearing from the council on Coventry Island that the sisters will have a
test to decide whether they can become full witches, it is up to them to write their destiny, but
many witches and warlocks won’t let that happen. Although this book has witches and warlocks
in it, it also shows realistic fiction because people can really relate to them since they have so
many problems that we all have in life, like boy trouble and jealousy. Cam and Alex both face
many challenges in both their secret life and regular life, but they do it together which
demonstrates love and compassion.
One of Cam’s problem in the book which demonstrates man vs. self, is her trying to figure out
whether a boy she likes can be trusted or not since his background is unpredictable, and she
doesn’t really know his background. She keeps falling back for him even though her sister
warns her to stay away from him since the last so many times he has failed to protect Cam, and
she keeps having trouble whether or not to trust him. She ends up stressing over about it, and
keeps listing why she should trust him and why she should not. Another problem in the book is
when many foes are trying to prevent Cam and Alex to pass the test to become full witches by
sabotaging them since they want their power for themselves. This ends up making Cam’s and
Alex’s life much more difficult even with their big test which shows man vs. group. I personally
loved the book, along with its series. Randi Reisfeld wrote tons of knowledge on the characters
using both direct and indirect characterization. I could really see through the characters, and I
understood what they were going through, and I could relate to them a lot. For example the
book says, “And strolling across it was Cade. With Cam! So entertained with each other that
they were totally oblivious of Alex and the shock of searing anger reddening her face.” This
demonstrates indirect characterization by showing us how jealous Alex is of Cam. This also
relates to real life, since many of us have boy problems and jealousy.
Overall, this book is a must read, even though it’s filled with magic, people can really relate to
the characters and their problems. This book is also great for young women and teens who
enjoy drama and mystery because this book has it all and has a lot of girl power.

The Twitches are back in the final book of the series. Can they become witches and follow in their family's legacy? Or will Thantos prevent them from their initiation by throwing evil at them from all directions?

All bets are off for the twins as they spend their entire birthday month studying, training, and preparing for their Coventry Island initiation. This test will prove just how strong, brave, and kind they are against all witchy situations. But they're also dealt wild cards in the fact that their malicious Uncle Thantos is plotting against them. He's recruited Sersee and some of his other lackeys to tear Alex and Cam apart when they need each other most.

I don't really have much to say about this book. I mean, happy ending, and lots of precious self-discovery and proud moments - however, it lacks in the build up. I just thought that there would be more to their initiation, or more to the book itself perhaps? There was very little backlash from other villainous characters, like Sersee and the other Furies. Plus, you never really hear about the drama with Shane and what's happened to him after he tried to kill Thantos.

Either way, I enjoyed this reread of the series.

So we're finally done. Volume ten is the last in the T*Witches saga and it couldn't have come soon enough. This last entry in the series actually does a great job of wrapping it up. Not only does the story end certain plot lines in a satisfactory way, but it also provides more background on its magic. I have to admit that I do wish the .

Overall, I thought this was a good series. It had a good setup and a solid background in its mythology. The way it intertwined plot threads within each novel was very nicely done.

Someone seems to be first Alex then Cam, causing the two sisters to get mad at each other, thinking each other has said and done nasty things. Then they realize something is going on. There's a fake twin somewhere who seems to be trying to stop their initiation from happening.

The twin turns out to be a servant of Thantos that they are able to defeat. They spend a lot of time at school helping other students by using spells.

Cam and Alex go to Coventry Island for their final tests, but Sersee shows up at their house. They handle that problem, but then have to figure out how they can be on Coventry Island at the same time they are supposed to be at the house for their birthday parties.

On the island, they go through their tests, and the final thing, how to deal with Thantos, they solve in a brilliant manner.

This is a fitting and very, very good ending to the series.

Early 20s me: 5 stars
Adult me: 5 stars

*For the first book in a "child/teen/middlegrade/nostalgic" book, I am going with the rating younger me would have gone with, then if I read on in the series, I will rate the books what adult me believes it should be rated. If the book is a stand alone, I will go with whatever rating I feel most comfortable giving the book. Please note, I do not really think books should have an age limit. People should read what they want to regardless of the intended age group, except for kids reading erotica or something, of course.*

--

I really liked this as a teen (I was 20 by the 10th book) and I have not read it as an adult yet, but I would like to believe that my feelings and rating would be the same. I will see upon a reread.

When I was a little kid I loved these books. Now at 21 years old I either, no longer feel the same, or the large gap between 9 and 10 left me without important details to identify other character. In any case, I'd still recommend this book for younger girls around 9 or 10. It's a simple read, has fun words I'm sure they would enjoy, and despite what Disney might have you believe, the main characters are closer to 15 than to 21(which DOES make a difference).

I read all these books about 4ish years ago (I think). It was right after the last one came out..anyways, they are WAY better than the movie!
