I've been a writer, one way or another, all my life. Before I could read, I made up poems and my mom wrote them down for me. In elementary school, my teachers almost always let me write poems or stories instead of requiring me to do art projects. Always, I dreamed of becoming a published writer...and that dream came true! I write novels about sexy, powerful men and independent-minded women, and what happens when they find each other and fall in love. My books are sexy and romantic, and they've very often full of romantic suspense. I write the kinds of books I love to read, and I hope that makes my readers happy.

Re Hostage of the Hawk - Sandra Marton does the kidnapped by the sheikh (or prince in this case) trope, complete with ugly American spitfire, shrewish h and misogynistic bully H.

The h and her father are in Morocco trying to negotiate a strip mining deal to steal a small desert country's natural resources under the guise of 'helping out the local economy.'

The h's father, no small misogynist himself and uglier than SM's usual Ugly American, is laid up with a bad back and can't meet the Mountain Prince Hawk of the North to try and bribe him into cooperation. Except the Hawk Prince doesn't do underlings and refuses to meet with anyone else.

So the h, who has wanted to be more than a hood and arm candy ornament for sometime, talks her father into giving her a vice-presidency if she can pull off this deal. The h believes her father when the guy tells her that this Hawk Prince just wants a big bribe and all she has to do is get his acceptance.

The h implies that the Jo the Hawk Prince is going to meet is the son of the CEO of the mining company, but in reality, the Hawk Prince's assistant is going to meet with the h.

To further confound the onlookers to this bit of HPlandia woe, the Hawk Prince was going to send his able assistant Hassan, but decides he better deal with these Western Son of a Dog double dealer's himself. So Hawk Prince shows up in disguise too.

We get the usual M/F and chauvinist/feminist verbal baiting, the H Hawk Prince is furious he has been set up - while completely ignoring that he is lying about who he is too. The h gives him the bribe money her father was planning to use as an inducement to being allowed to mine the land and the H pretends to accept it.

Then he kidnaps the h and tries to use the h as a bargaining chip to force her father to break up negotiations with the Southern Sultan of his land.

(The back story on this is that the man the h's father originally negotiated with is the usurping Sultan of the southern part of the H's kingdom, he took the throne when the H was a boy. The H has spent years in a guerrilla war trying to win back the whole country.

The country is very poor and has no standing army and not a huge population, so the fighting is more like scrimmage games around the various areas. The H wants the h's father to only negotiate with him because it will destabilize the usurper bandit and the mine profits will be used for the H's governance and a few more guns, not for the personal enjoyment of the usurper.)

The h's father, who really doesn't see much value in his daughter except as a fashion accessory, refuses to negotiate. Then we have a whole five chapters of the Ugly American h behaving very, very badly - not so much to the H, he is a kidnapper and deserves some spite- but to the H's staff and servants.

The h accuses the H of keeping them as slaves, but then turns around and is highly abusive herself. Even when the H takes her around and SHOWS her how things are done and how people are treated and lets the h talk with them freely, the h continues on in blinders and her assumptions and her abusive nastiness.

The H has his own more than generous helping of domineering bully misogynist behavior with the h, but neither one of them can deny the powerful pull of the Lurve Force Mojo. Finally the h brazens out a way to escape.

She steals and abuses a horse, until the H manages to catch up with her and they have a big lurve club event. Then the bad guy and his merry bandits manage to catch up to the two of them. The h is in love at this point, but she lies to the bad guy that she hates the H and he is a rapist and the bad guy needs to send the H to her father for payback.

Then the H's seekrit army of goat herds managed to find some guns and the bad guys are killed and everyone is saved and the Hawk Prince H can take his rightful throne. But he believed the h when she lied about hating the H and he kicks her out of the country.

The h goes back to the US to have the standard SM mopey moment for six months. Her father is still a slime swiller and the H is looking for a new mining partner. The h's father decides to hold a press conference and ambushes the h with reporters.

All the while the snot snarfer father is telling the story that the H is the real usurper and kidnapped his beloved child to extort mining concessions for his own profit. The h, utterly despising that bit of bad behavior, announces to the entire NYC press corp that she and Hawk Prince had a brief fling for an affair and he never kidnapped her and that she loves the H.

The H shows up at her door a few hours later, he loves her too and she can come to his country and be the teacher she always really wanted to be. The h and H have a purple passion moment and the h's father says he is sorry for being a snot snarfer for the standard Sheikhy Lurve HEA.

I was not a fan of this book. Not only for the exceedingly tedious and trite stereotypes, but because both of these people were just plain nasty to secondary characters when they did not need to be. I don't like bullies and the H and h were the ultimate of that extreme.

Plus they were utterly stupid imbeciles and I hope the mine collapses with them in it before they breed. However, it is a very typical old skool captured by the sheikh trope and if I had more tolerance for abusive elitist behavior, it probably would be a marginally okay HPlandia day at the office.

The heroine was bitchy and mean to the hero almost the entire book! She was obnoxious and wouldn't admit the truth even when she saw it with her own eyes which made her look dumb. The hero was okay, we didn't get enough of his point of view and I am not sure why he wanted this chick. I guess Barbara Faith's heroines have spoiled me since they are actually mature and intelligent and react sensibly.
