Ces âmes chagrines
Né dans l'Hexagone, Antoine Kingué, dit Snow, n'arrive pas à surmonter la rancoeur qu'il nourrit envers sa mère, coupable de ne l'avoir pas assez aimé. Elle l'a laissé en pension alors qu'il n'avait que sept ans et envoyer passer les grandes vacances seul au Mboasu, ce pays subsaharien où il ne s'est jamais senti à sa place. Par ailleurs, il est persuadé que son frère Maxime a reçu plus d'affection que lui.
Pour se venger de cette enfance malheureuse, Snow fait payer ceux qui l'ont fait souffrir, rêve de devenir une vedette adulée, une star dont la vie serait enfin brillante et facile. Quand son frère lui annonce son retour au pays avec leur mère, Snow voit son univers s'effondrer. Sans plus personne sur qui passer sa rage, il se retrouve face à lui-même...

Depuis six romans déjà Léonora Miano explore la même veine : celle de la difficulté à être Africain(e), en Afrique même (tel était l'objet de sa trilogie africaine entâmée par "L'intérieur de la nuit" qui lui valut un succès mérité dès 2005) et en France ("Des astres éteints" qui explore les errances de l'idéologie kémite est, de mon point de vue, son roman le plus riche).
Comme Fatou Diome, Léonora Miano est plongée dans le "chaudron afrodiasporique". Les deux romancières partagent une approche stimulante de la post-colonialisation qui renvoie dos à dos le paternalisme des anciens dominateurs et la victimisation des anciens dominés.
Hélas elles romancent leurs idées avec des semelles de plomb. La littérature post-coloniale indienne est autrement plus délicate : leurs romans sont plus proches de Virginie Despentes que de Jhumpa Lahiri ou de Monica Ali ! Leur style, trop travaillé, est haïssable : y alternent des expressions familières et des constructions alambiquées.
Le dernier roman de Léonora Miano n'échappe pas à ces critiques. L'héroine de "Ces âmes chagrines" se prénomme Modi. On comprend vite que son prénom (Modi est maudite) annonce bien des malheurs : son père la déshérite, son amoureux meurt tandis qu'elle est en couches, sa fille unique, violée à 14 ans, puis à 17, se désintéressse de ses enfants avant d'émigrer en France où elle aura un troisième fils, avant de sombrer dans la déchéance, etc.
Pour donner à son oeuvre une portée plus universelle, Léonora Miano se refuse, dans ce livre comme dans le précédent, à nommer les lieux (la France, l'Afrique, le Cameroun, Paris ...) et recourt à des pseudonymes qui prêtent à sourire : l'Afrique est le Continent, Paris l'Intra-muros, l'Angleterre devient l'Albion, la Suisse l'Helvétie ...
Malgré tous ses défauts - les plus pénibles étant sans doute son immodestie et son manque d'humour - l'oeuvre de Léonora Miano mérite néanmoins d'être lue car elle constitue un témoignage littéraire éclairant de la "condition noire en France" brillamment analysée par le sociologue Pap Ndiaye.

Well... I don't really know what to say about this book. I had a really hard time to read it in the beginning because of the language and the way it was written. But the story was really good, well you understood that it was good halfway into the book, the first half was just awful.
The characters were very well written, you understood why they acted and behaved in a certain way, but that doesn't mean I liked them. The main character Antoine or "snow" was a really big douchebag All the other characters were otherwise likable.
Well to try to sum this book up; it was interesting and good, the story was very different from anything else I've read so that was fun. But i don't think I would recommend it to anyone, maybe if the person I recommend it to is a real douche and needs to grow up, then they should definitively read this.

This is the third novel I've read from Camerounese author Léonaria Miano. Each of her books read I've rated differentlty. In this novel, readers follow an African family sage written differentlty from all of the other family sagas we know. Readers follow:
- first and mostly one member of the third generation of this family, Antone Kingue alias Snow, naturalized French raised in France in boardroom schools and in Africa during summer times by his grandmother;
- then we read about Antone's mother, Thamar, who had a tragic life both in Africa during childhood and teeange years and whose life continued to be dramatic in France,
- and finally we read about Antone's grandmother, mother of Thamar, Modi.
As usual with African literature, readers will read about the ocean of poverty and misery in Africa and how the Africans who managed to immigrate legally or illegally in France, are still living a life of suffering in France. However, whitin this vast sea of sadness and dramas, readers can detect that there are individual cases of hope, good future, and hapiness such as is the case with Antone's older brother and Antone's friend Mustafa. After Antone realizes that these two individuals whom he exploited were able to manage a good and decent happy life, he finally turned around his fate and started working to have a piece of this future, but he still felt lonely since childhood.
Within the descritpions of poverty and injustice both in Africa and France and through the family saga, the author intelligently wrote about one simple truth/fact:
any individual who grew up not knowing anything about his own family's past and not loved during his childhood, that individual will not have self confidence to be able to achieve anything, whether establishing a love relationship and/or working hard to suceed professionnally.
Despite being a great family saga with good morale, I rated only 3 stars because the author made it very hard for readers to understand the real meaning of this book. First of all, it was unnecessary for her to switch real names of places with general terms. Second of all, I felt the story was written well, but totally disorganized. Readers jumped from reading either about Antone from one period of his life to another with no transition or from reading about one character and switching to another character. It's really at the end that readers can make sense of the story, its chronology, and its meaning due to the lack of structure and organization of the sub-stories within the large story.
A better organization and less description of general poverty in Africa and suffering in France could have made it easier for readers to enjoy this great African family saga that shared a common tragic link.

Antoine är inte ute efter att bli älskad utan sedd och avundad!
Ända sedan han blev hemsänd till sin mormor i Mbouasi, ett land i Afrika, som barn. Mamman med sin nye man bodde kvar i Frankrike.
Som vuxen återvänder Antione till Frankrike, där han lever ett flott liv. På pengar som han får in genom att låna ut sin identitet.
Han känner sig sviken av sin mamma ända sedan barndomen. Han vill bli känd så både hans mamma, mormor och bröder ska få se att han har lyckats på egen hand här i livet.
När vi kommer in i handlingen får han reda på att de som lånat hans identitet har ordnat upp sina liv.
Antione kommer att bli utan pengar. Men det som till en början verkar bli en riktigt olycklig dag visar sig att även att han får möjlighet till att äntligen bli kändis genom TV. Det blir början på en utveckling av framgång men även komplikationer i förhållandet till sin närmaste familj.
Boken ger en inblick i hur det är att leva i ett fattigt land i Afrika. Med konflikter både från tidigare kolonisationsländer och med gamla traditioner. Och komplicerade familjeförhållanden.
Boken ger förståelse för att det inte är så lätt att leva i ett sådant land. Att välfärden norrut kan vara lockande för många. Men att besvikelsen blir ofta stor, även för den som vänder hem. Mycket engagerande bok som inte slutar riktigt som jag trodde!

4,5 même, je dirais. Le problème étant que je ne sais pas vraiment pourquoi j’ai apprécié ce livre.. je crois que je suis profondément intéressée par les liens que peuvent entretenir deux êtres humains, combien la vie de nos descendants peuvent influencer la nôtre et c’est vrai que ce roman dépeint plutôt bien ces aspects là. Le récit est étoffé, il y a de la matière même s’il est assez court donc on ne s’y ennuie pas, même si j’ai le sentiment qu’il est assez éloigné de l’idée que je m’en faisais au départ quand j’ai vu le nom de l’autrice sur la couverture, il est différent des Aubes Écarlates, mais ça reste un bon bouquin tout de même !

Un très beau livre mêlant sentiments fraternels, destin d'une famille en France, en Afrique, vie entre les deux, immigrants et revenants...bien écrit et captivant.

Je n'ai pas trouvé beaucoup de rebondissements, je me suis personnel ment ennuyée mais ce n'est pas mon style de lecture habituel. Les personnages sont attachants, l'histoire est sans plus.

Deuxième lecture de ce texte, toujours aussi prenant! Une recommandation absolue, poésie à chaque page, et malgré les thèmes tristes, bizarrement pas déprimant.
