Professor ‘Abdur-Rahman I Doi died on 8 Dhul-Hijjah, 1419 (May 26, 1999) in Madras. Born in Ahmadabad, India, he had great experience in researching, lecturing and administration. In 1965 he redesigned the syllabus of Islamic studies for the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. At the University of Ife in Nigeria, he produced multiple works of African societal studies, including: Nigeria: A Case Study, Islam in Nigeria; Shehu Uthman Dan Fodio: The Great Mujahid and Mujaddid of Africa. He also held positions at the Ahmado Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, the International Islamic University of Malaysia and the Rand Afrikaans University in South Africa, where he also established the Dar as-Salaam Islamic Research Center. He worked hard to provide Muslim students with reliable Islamic texts and syllabi and make them aware of the subtle dangers of Orientalist writings. He was 66 years of age at the time of his death and left behind a wife, two sons and a daughter.
