Oh no! Kotoko's grades have her in danger of failing to graduate, while her beloved Naoki moves forward with his plans to become a doctor. What does this mean for her plans to get herself into the nursing school program? Add in the very real personal dramas of her classmates and it becomes quite apparent ― the road to happily ever after sure is rough!
Tada (多田かおる) made her debut in 1977, when still a high school student, on Shueisha's "Deluxe Margaret" magazine. Tada's stories belong to the shōjo genre of manga and feature love stories centred around young female characters and their love interests. The storylines include comedic moments and are characterised by essential and sharp drawings. Some of Tada's most popular works are Ai Shite Knight, Itazura na Kiss and Kimi no na wa Debora.
Ai Shite Knight portrays the Japanese rock music scene of the early 1980s. The anime series based on Ai Shite Knight was the first ever to feature original songs performed within the episodes. Another of Tada's works, Miihaa Paradise is also set in the rock 'n' roll world.
Itazura na Kiss (Mischievous Kiss) - begun in 1991 and never completed - was by far Tada's most successful work in Japan. It tells the love story between Kotoko and Naoki from high school until after their marriage. The series inspired also an illustrated art book and two novels written by Nori Harata and published in Shueisha's "Cobalt" series. In 1996 a live action Japanese TV series based on Itazura na Kiss was also produced, starring Aiko Satō as Kotoko and Takashi Kashiwabara as Naoki. In 2005, the series was adapted into a Taiwanese drama under the name of It Started With a Kiss and in 2008 an anime was also released.
Kaoru Tada died in 1999 of a cerebral hemorrhage. While moving to a new residence, she hit her head on a marble table and fell into a coma. Three weeks later, she died. She was 38.
I love this read. I love Kotoko. She is such a fighter. Naoki (I love to call him Irie-kun) is a smart, but cold guy. However, I love his character as well. In this volume, Rika-chan is introduced as the girl who had a crush on Irie-kun and his cousin. Kotoko becomes jealous because she thinks Irie-kun likes Rika-chan more than her. However, it is later when it becomes evident that he loves Kotoko. He just doesn't know how to show it. Also, Kotoko can't graduate because she calculated the credits wrong. She thinks she can't graduate with Irie-kun and it is funny and cute.
This series makes you think about relationships and how opposites can attract. In the case of Kotoko and Irie-kun, Irie-kun is always seen as cold to Kotoko. However, Kotoko is always bubbly and outgoing. The fact that they are opposites makes their relationship more adventurous and loving. As the series progresses, I see more to Irie-kun than the cold-hearted guy. I see a guy who doesn't know how to express his emotions. Hence, he is always perceived as cold-hearted when he is really just misunderstood. Kotoko is the opposite. She is always fighting for her love for Irie-kun. It is cute. I don't think anyone can drag this girl down. Like seriously, she always tries her best and makes time for her family and friends. Overall, a funny read.
lord, kotoko and i think orthogonally to each other
like when rika started pushing at her with 'naoki and i shared a first kiss when he was fifteen and i was ten' i was like '...yo kotoko you should have a talk with your husband about the fact that he thought it was appropriate as a teenager to kiss a child? that is SUPER CREEPY? i'm concerned?!?!'
meanwhile kotoko freaks out because what if naoki loves rika better!
just. very different priorities we have
also the fact that they wrap it up with 'kotoko would never have gone to america if she was in love with naoki!' like what? rika was TEN, she is a literal child, this has got to be the dumbest love rival storyline i have ever seen in my life
Another hilarious (and occasionally infuriating ) issue with all the ridiculous situations and exaggerated expressions I've come to love. but what was with the whole first cousins-as-possible-lovers storyline??? so weird >_< everytime Rika Would go on about how they're a perfect match and there's no reason they shouldn't be together, I kept screaming "but you're FAMILY" ^^;
I would also like to say Keita is a welcome addition, it's nice having someone remind Naoki that Kotoko deserves a little respect, especially from her husband.
I absolutely loved this series! I found the dynamics of having two people in such close proximity to one another but resisting each other all the while quite appealing. Even though I did not really like the character of Aihara I did really enjoy her love/hate relationship with Irie and their conflicting personalities.
Old childhood rivals, a cranky patient, IV troubles and a toast to give at a friend's wedding......when will Kotoko's life get any easier? At least she still has her husband's love......or does she???? (She first problem.)
