Rate this book
Although Amharic is the national language of Ethiopia and English its international language, until publication of this book in hardcover there was no concise Amharic-English, English-Amharic dictionary. Students of Amharic as well as visitors to Ethiopia and foreign workers will benefit from this concise dictionary with phonetic transcriptions that allow for its use by those unfamiliar with Amharic script.

As I noted in my review of David Appleyard's Colloquial Amharic , there is a dearth of good instructional materials available to those wishing to study this Semitic language from Ethiopia. Leslau's dictionary, one of the few available when I began my studies, has proved invaluable to me. With both Amharic-English and English-Amharic sections, it covers basic modern vocabulary, and helpfully provides the transliteration of Amharic words, for those students whose grasp of their fidäl is still elementary.
