How Do I Tell You?

Rate this book
Running was my only option. I left my family, dog, and life behind, all to save mine. Minnesota became home, but not without the help of my new friends. I kept my past a secret, too ashamed to tell them how a man I trusted so completely broke me down so fully. Tyler Scott may be the hottest man I have ever seen. Built like a lumberjack, towering over me at 6’6”, with the most mesmerizing green eyes, he is the most caring and attentive man I’ve ever met. After my friends find out I’m living in the worst apartments in town, they come up with a better option. Move into a friend's old place… with Tyler as my roommate. I’ve had a crush since the first day I met him, so there is no way I will be able to keep my attraction to him at bay. Tyler helps me break down the walls I’d built to protect myself, and soon, I find myself falling hard for him. He helps me every step of the way, but when my past threatens to ruin everything I’ve worked for, will I be able to survive again, this time with Tyler at my side? Author’s How Do I Tell You? deals with subjects that may be triggering to some, including flashbacks/on-page scenes of emotional/physical and verbal abuse, physical violence, as well as mentions of cheating. (None of which are between Hero & Heroine.) Please only continue if you feel that you are able to read this book. The last thing I want to do is inadvertently harm someone.

Welcome back to Cinder Valley! How Do I Tell You? Is book two in this series, and while it is not required, it is highly recommended that you start with book 1- Tip Of My Tongue , which is Lainey and Colin’s story!

As book two in the Cinder Valley series, we’re taken back for another love story involving Mallory and Tyler, alongside their friends Lainey and Colin (from book 1, Tip Of My Tongue), and Sam and Owen. Mallory, a domestic violence survivor, flees her abusive ex Trenton and settles in Cinder Valley, where she’s immediately adopted by Lainey, Sam, and their crew. And it’s where she meets and falls for Tyler, Colin and Owen’s best friend.

Some familiar tropes come into play here – surprise, they were roommates, when Mallory and Tyler end up renting Colin’s house together. I enjoyed how cozy these two became over the course of the novel – and of course, how creative they were when it came to their spicy scenes. ;) Tyler’s steady love and acknowledging that Mallory needed to come to terms with her past, in her own time, was great to read.

(Spoilers ahead!)

I do feel as though the tension between Mallory and Trenton could’ve been ramped up, however. For much of the story, he’s a threat in the back of Mallory’s mind as she processes what she went through. I’m glad for this — this helped me connect to her as a character, and it’s a reminder that trauma affects us all in different ways. But once he gets her number, and it’s obvious that he’s going to make an appearance, I waited for him to make a move, but there are several chapters where that threat is pushed aside. When he finally shows up, and Sam and Lainey defend Mallory, it really hit home how Mallory’s found her new family, even when she thought she should run to protect them. Found family is probably my favorite trope and I loved to see it play out here.

I was less a fan of the surprise twist at the end, but overall this was a fun read with some memorable characters. Definitely worth another trip to Cinder Valley!

Okay, this book was WAY better than Book 1!! It had the “Show-Not-Tell” flashback scenes that were missing from Book 1! As much as they were painful to read (Mallory, the main female lead, is a Domestic Violence survivor), they were all very much needed in this story. The author clearly learned from writing her first novel & that was happy to see. Tyler, the main male lead, is very sweet & protective of her, but not overly-protective. The only thing about Tyler that seemed a little off was: My God, he sleeps like the dead! Lol 😂 I’m serious, throughout the story, Malloy gets woken up by several nightmares (completely understandable given what she’s been through) & Ty (a.k.a. Tyler) SLEEPS right through them; not waking up until he realizes that Mallory had gotten out of bed!! And I’m like seriously?!?! If MY significant other is suffering from nightmares after a traumatic event(s), I would have DEFINITELY wake up A LOT sooner!! And I’m NOT a light sleeper, by ANY means, either!! And what makes it worse is that at one point, Mallory says something like, “He’s very intuitive; always knowing what I need from him.” And I’m thinking, “Well, yeah, except when he’s asleep!!” 🤣 But anyway, that just seemed a little like a contradiction in the story … Also, the author has a Dr. Collins (the same doctor that was in Book 1) when she already has a ANOTHER male character named COLIN, without the “s” & the 2nd “l”, in the story & I’m like, “Really? You couldn’t have come up with another name for the doctor for your book? ANY other name? Really??” But she already admitted that she’s terrible at coming up with names for fictional characters, which I also understand, so . . . Also, I like the little twist of Tyler wasn’t there to save her from her abusive ex- towards the end, either. Someone ELSE did! It was a nice little change from the predictable ending of so many romances where the guy ALWAYS saves the woman (I’m not telling you who does because that would be too “spoiler-y” but . . . ). It was just nice to read the little change! 🥹 And bonus: They (Mallory & Tyler) don’t break up at all once they get together!! 😀 All in all, I liked the story & like I said, it was WAY better than her 1st novel (thus, giving it 5 stars instead my 4 star-rating for Book 1), so I’m excited to see that she’s gonna continue the story with Theo (Sam’s brother) & Peyton (Mallory’s nurse friend) fake-dating romance! 👍🏻 I’m excited to read THAT story when it comes out & hopefully, she gives us something about how Owen & Sam 1st got together in the form of a short-mini-prequel, too!! 🥰

I received a free copy of this book & am voluntarily leaving a review. This is book 2 of the Cinder Valley Series & can be read as a standalone, though the characters & some of the events mentioned are introduced in Tip of My Tongue. The book's blurb lets you know what to expect & make sure you pay attention to the author's note. It's a good & spicy dual pov romance about being able to love again.

After leaving an abusive relationship behind, Mallory is doing her best to start anew in Cinder Valley. While her situation isn't the best, she continues to get by while she thinks about how she will make things improve. She's reluctant to accept help from her friends because she doesn't want to be pitied but she accepts it knowing it's the best course of action. As expected, her relationship with her ex has left her scared & scarred & you will feel for her struggles. But, you will also feel proud of her as she comes to her own once again through her relationship with Tyler.

Since the moment they met, Tyler was attracted to Mallory but knew there was something about her that made him know he couldn't rush things. Unexpectedly becoming roommates allowed him to get to know her & see the sides she wanted to keep hidden. Through it all, Tyler is the most patient, understanding, & protective - especially learning about her past. However, he doesn't view her as fragile or any negative thought she has about herself & always makes sure to let her know otherwise. While I loved Tyler for how he was with Mallory, I would've liked to more inner monologues about his individual goals because we had a few scenes of him studying & eventually achieving it. Also, him being hurt by his ex was mentioned & in book 1 too but it seemed more like an afterthought. However, those tiny things don't take away from his character.

While their instant attraction is mutual, the romance is a slow burn because of what Mallory is experiencing. However, it's spicy enough that you won't mind. I did think the conflict was going to cause a bit more of suspense throughout & the resolution to it gave me mixed feelings . Aside from the romance, you will like the friendships - especially if you love the found family trope. Overall, this was a good follow up to the author's debut novel & I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

How Do I Tell You? - Saylor Ann

I was so lucky to have Saylor Ann reach out to me to review her latest instalment of the Cinder Valley Series, ‘How Do I Tell You’. The book was a whirlwind of emotions and ideas, leaving me with a lot to process and reflect on.

This book contains TW’s regarding domestic violence and abuse. The novel explores the harrowing effects of trauma and domestic violence on the protagonist, leading to mental breakdowns and overwhelming anxiety, as she struggles to overcome her past. The way Saylor masterfully portrayed domestic violence and abuse was both visceral and emotionally resonant, bringing to light the harsh realities of such experiences in a way that leaves a lasting impact on the reader.

Mallory, MFC, was able to effectively overcome her anxiety and trauma in the book due in large part to her access to counselling and the support of a caring figure, highlighting the crucial role these resources can play in promoting healing and recovery. This provided her a safe space to process her emotions and develop coping strategies, ultimately promoting healing and growth in herself and as a character.

As a reader, I felt the author skillfully portrayed the strong dynamics of friendship and the intense attraction between the main characters, Mallory and Tyler, weaving together these two key elements of the story to create a rich and engaging narrative. However, certain events and transitions in the storyline were not integral to its ultimate outcome and could have been better served as side stories in subsequent additions to the Cinder Valley series.

For readers seeking a thought-provoking and spicy romance that explores the complex issue of violence in relationships, the upcoming release of 'How Do I Tell You' on April 28th, is sure to deliver an engaging read.

Happy Reading,

Alie

So happy to be back in Cinder Valley for another great book! This was a quick read ( just like book 1) as you will be drawn in and won’t want to put it down!

Before reviewing the content of the book, I have to admit - I loved that the author keeps the reader updated on the fact that her family still doesn’t know she writes spicy books. Like, when will they find out?? Will she tell them?

Back to the review - while reading book 1, where we first met Mallory, I wondered what trauma she went through and who she was hiding from - the jump when she was in the bar was a great set up in book 1 for her story that we learn about here in book 2. I was very excited this is who the author decided to have as the main lady in book 2! I really enjoyed Mallory and Tylers love story - it felt very real and wasn’t picture perfect. As someone who has experienced anxiety and depression, I could see those in Mallory; the author did a great job showing her anxieties and fears in a very authentic and realistic way. As for Tyler, hot firefighter?!? Yes please! Loved that the author showed that though he is a hero in his daytime job, he isn’t always able to save the day - though he tries! The author showed how men can be both strong and feel vulnerable or helpless at times.

The ending wasn’t as much of a surprise for me as it may have been for others; I guessed a few chapters before it occurred though I didn’t find it to be super obvious, however the hints were there if you really paid attention. I really enjoyed seeing the evolving bond between the leading ladies of the series; this book showed they would really do anything for one another! As for the spice level, I’m all for it! The author kept it authentic to her characters which I appreciated.

Saylor did it again! Mallory and Tyler are my everything! I have loved both of them since they were introduced in the first book of the Cinder Valley Series, Tip Of My Tongue.

Mallory is a domestic violence survivor who escapes her abusive ex- boyfriend Trenton and finds herself in Cinder Valley. She is one of the strongest FMC I’ve read about in a long time. I loved watching her growth through the book and finding herself. Mallory is introduced to her best friends Sam and Lainey through Lainey’s boyfriend Colin. The three of them become instant friends!

Tyler is a hot firefighter who works with Colin and Sam’s boyfriend Owen. The three of them are the perfect boy friend group who support each other. Tyler is so sweet with the biggest heart! He has had a crush on Mallory since the moment he met her.

Mallory and Tyler become roommates after their friends offers Colin’s house to them because they didn’t have anywhere to go. They have always been interested in each other but didn’t know how to express to each other. Them becoming roommates forces them to realize how much they like each other! Their love is so beautiful. Seeing Tyler help her heal was perfection! He is so supportive through Mallory healing journey. They are such a beautiful couple and their love is so beautiful! The spice between these two was so hot! They have the best sexual chemistry!

I LOVED the friendship between Mallory, Sam and Lainey. I would love to be in their friend group. They are my kinda girls! I love that Mallory found her family through her friend group!

I cried and laughed out loud ALOT! I can’t wait for Theo’s book!

Tyler and Mallory met one night at a bar through friends and they have never looked back.

Mallory has kept to herself for the last six months leaving a dangerous situation and arriving in Minnesota. Until she meets Sam and Lainey who have taken her under their wing and instantly made her part of the friendship group.

Tyler was instantly attracted to Mallory since he first met her, but he knew that she was hiding something, so he didn’t want to push her.

When Tyler and Mallory both move into their friends empty house, they get closer and closer until all of Mallory’s past is exposed. And Tyler is now even more protective than ever.

Tyler and Mallory are the absolute sweetest couple and they will just make you swoon. I love how they had instant chemistry, but didn’t act on it until they broke through their barriers and everything was out in the open.

But what makes this book even more special is the friends and found family that surround both of them. All of the friends and the parents in this book are so supportive and it just made my heart so happy.

I can’t wait to read Theo’s book next!

How Do I Tell You is Book 2 in the Cinder Valley Series by Saylor Ann.

This is Tyler and Mallory's story. Tyler has long been part of the friend group. And Mallory, we met in book 1 as she is the nurse at the home where she cares for Colin's mom. We know from book 1 that Mallory is hiding something, and I think most of us suspect it is domestic violence related. She fled her home and family in Colorado to escape an abusive boyfriend. She is just trying to rebuild her life when she is adopted into the girls' friend group in book 1. When Tyler met Mallory, he immediately felt attracted to her, but he also felt protective of her and aware that she was hiding something. When a miscommunication leads to them being roommates, he learns how deep her trauma goes. Mallory suffers from panic attacks and nightmare as well as horrible self-esteem issues.
Tyler was incredibly loving and patient completely understanding, and no matter what Mallory needed, he met he with her with exactly that every time.
Mallory was incredibly strong and resilient, vulnerable yet open to love and help. Both of the main characters were extremely well written.
The supporting characters were fantastic and funny and helped to balance out the heaviness in this story.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. In fact, this series has been great so far. I am really excited about Theo's story.

Mallory and Tyler

This was a great second book to this series. We saw the attraction between Tyler and Mallory in the first book and it continued on in this book. It was definitely a tough story at times, but it was definitely worth it in the end.

I loved how patient and understanding Tyler was with Mallory. He never pushed her to reveal her secrets, he let her tell him when she was ready. I loved his love for Mallory. I’m a sucker for a good nickname and his immediate use of Peanut for Mallory because she was so much smaller than him.

Mallory was such a strong, resilient character. She saved herself from her abusive relationship and kept fighting to get her life back. She went through so many ups and downs and fought her own mind to find her happiness.

I loved the friend group and their support of Tyler and Mallory. I loved how Sam and Lainey brought Mallory into their group so seamlessly. There were so many feel good moments in this book that balanced out the heartbreaking ones.

Who needs a knight in shining armor when you can have a lumberjack looking, firefighter, life rescuing hottie?

Boy, oh boy. This was my first Saylor Ann book and I just have to say…Loved it! The theme of the storyline can be a difficult one to tackle, but Saylor did it beautifully and with respect.

The emotions are very raw and I was praying for Mallory from the get go. The connection between her and Tyler is sweet and spicy and all that you could want in a love story.

The ending, of course, is everything you could ever want. By the end of Mallory and Tyler’s story, I felt like they were friends who took me along for the ride. Up and down, twists and turns…this had it all.

I guess my one teeny, tiny compliant is the use of exclamation marks. I felt like they were always very excited, surprised or yelling. I would definitely watch those in the future.

Adding more Saylor Ann books to my TBR.

Tyler is book boyfriend material & will have you swooning right a long Mallory so be ready for some cute dates & spicy moments!

** TW: flashbacks/on-page scenes of emotional/verbal/physical abuse, cheating, & violence (none of which are between the FMC & MMC)

please be in a healthy mindset before reading! **

The love story in this book was amazing but I really loved that this book didn’t shy away from showing how much one’s abusive past has impact on them even if they are trying their best to move on from it. Saylor did an amazing job expressing the ups/downs of starting a new relationship after being in a dark place. It requires support/love which doesn’t always have to just be from a new romantic partner. While Tyler was the hero that Mallory deserved, Lainey & Sam were who she truly needed in starting her new life.

TW: abuse (verbal, emotional and physical, alcoholism)

I really enjoyed this book. Mallory ran from an abusive relationship, completely cutting off her family in hopes she'd protect them AND continue to hide from her abusive ex-boyfriend. Tyler feels a connection to Mallory from the moment he meets her, but he can see she's a spooked horse and wants nothing to do with him.

Thrown together, when their friends accidentally offer up lodging in an abandoned home available for rent, Mallory and Tyler begin a slow friendship as Tyler fights his attraction to Mallory. As she slowly opens up to him and they begin a relationship, Tyler realizes he will need to protect her when her past comes back to haunt her.

I especially loved the ending, as well as the bonus epilogue. Looking forward to more to come from this new author!

Saylor did it again! I felt all of the feels while reading this book!

Mallory is one of the strongest main characters I’ve read. She’s hiding from her abusive ex in Cinder Valley, surrounded by amazing friends and the man of her dreams. She keeps plugging along and finds herself sharing a house with Tyler, the man she’s been crushing on for months.

Tyler has watched his buddies fall in love with their girls but hasn’t been lucky enough to find his, until Mallory joins their group of friends. The way he loves her unconditionally from the start is amazing to read. He’s all in and protective of her even before he knows about her past.

Karma is an amazing thing and it definitely comes around in this story! Go add it to your collection right now!!

Oh this book. This was my first Saylor Ann book but I swear it gave me so many feels it was unreal. I absolutely loved not only the dynamic between Tyler and Mallory but the sense of family we get from the entire friend group throughout this entire storyline. I feel I resonated so much with Mallory and her emotions and strength. I also could not love Tyler more for the support and love he gave her from day 1. The care that he expressed throughout this entire storyline was one that will be a top favorite of mine for the foreseeable future. I couldn't help but fangirl when there was a favorite author of mine mentioned as well ;) This book is going to be a recommendation for all my girlfriends no doubt!

“How Do I Tell You?” is Tyler and Mallory’s story, and I was so hooked that I read it in two straight hours!!! This book had it all - it was sweet and spicy as well as emotional and intense. The banter between all the friends was so freaking funny, and I enjoyed their dynamic. I really felt for Mallory in this one, her past is so heartbreaking, but she was able to overcome her fears. I also loved the way Tyler stepped up to take care of her, he was endlessly kind and patient and worked hard to earn her trust. All in all, I thought this was a fabulous read!!!

Saylor Ann is a contemporary romance author to watch for. This romance will resonate with a lot of people who have been though terrible relationships. The characters are so sweet and relatable. The spice is just enough and follows the story line perfectly. This can be read as a stand-alone but it is a series of books that are all in the same world where characters know each other. Definitely keep your eye on this author.

Mallory escaped an abusive relationship that left her with some trauma. Fleeing her ex, she meets her friends Sam and Lainey that led her to Tyler. Ty and Mal became roomies renting Colin’s house and fell more and more for each other. Tyler is a such sweetheart, supportive and patient with her, understanding that she needed to go at her own pace without judging her for her reactions. I loved how Mal grow during the book. She became a strong FMC that is not afraid to say No anymore. This book was funny (thanks to Sam and Lainey) but also full of tension. I loved how Ann described Mal and her trauma and how even if your heart tells you something, it can be difficult to align it with your brain. And their relationship and the 🌶️
😍 I really enjoyed this book. I cannot wait for Theo and Peyton’s book ☺️

This was an easy 4 ⭐️! The town of Cinder Valley strikes again with another sweet match. Mallory and Tyler show such an authentic relationship but, make sure to read the TWs before diving in to this book. Though you don’t have to read the first book to dig in to this one, I would highly recommend doing so! This book follows Mallory, a nurse, through regaining her independence in a brand new town; and Tyler a local firefighter who has the absolute sweetest heart of gold. I loaf this book and all of it’s little pop culture references.

Cute cinnamon roll romance!

Mallory and Tyler are the cutest couple! I loved how Mallory came from a DV situation and it really carried with her throughout the story. I love the whole vibe that you get from the whole friend circle and how the book really carries everyone together, without feeling overwhelming. The only thing stopping this from being 5 stars for me was the ending. Not a huge fan of the pregnancy trope, but overall it was done well. Can't wait to read Peyton and Theo's story!

I have been waiting for Mallory’s story since we first meet her. There was something about her that made me want to wrap her in a giant hug and Saylor did not disappoint.

Mallory’s growth over her story in terms of strength and reclaiming herself was beautiful to see. It takes such courage to get yourself out of the situation the Mallory finds herself in with Trenton and realising that none of what she had come to believe about herself were true.

Her friendship with Sam and Lainey is a strong as ever and something that I truly adore about this series. It’s so authentic and beautiful and something that I really resonate with.

Now Tyler. Tyler, Tyler, Tyler. This man. I knew he was a keeper when he first appeared in the bar but man oh man I was not expecting the cinnamon roll, kind, sweet and dirty soul he is. He truly is the perfect person for Mal, giving her the support, encouragement and love that she deserves.

Honourable mentions
* We got a hockey scene!!
* Cute moments with Stella & Bubba
* Tyler being inspired by spicy books
* Sam’s crazy
* Hello Theo 😍

I really enjoyed retuning to Cinder Valley. I cannot wait to return soon.

Mallory and Tyler end up as roommates due to a missed communication by their friends, Lainey and Colin. Mallory is still struggling to get her life back after escaping from an abusive ex-boyfriend. Tyler is determined to help her as he tries to fight his attraction to her. However, eventually he manages to break down her barriers but complications arise when her ex tracks her down. A hot, emotional read. Read an ARC for an honest review.

Such a good book! Mallory is in an abusive relationship and she leaves one day ending up in Cinder Valley. Sam and Lainey adopt her into their group and they move her out of a terrible apartment to be roommates with Tyler. They both have a crush on the other but she is haunted by Trenton her ex. Tyler and Mallory are together and at the end Trenton found her and he ran from the cops but that is when Mallory finds out she is 3 months pregnant. Loved it!!

Very good read. I enjoyed the connection between the two mc. Tyler is what a book boyfriend is about and Mallory just makes you love her more knowing her past. Just a fair warning this book has triggers from abuse but the author does a fantastic job giving Mallory strength and a great set of friends to get her thru it. Give it a shot!
