For many people there is a barrier between them and non-representational art. Looking at abstract painting does require a different frame of mind—a different way of looking even—than when looking at say, a Constable landscape. This book, I suggest, will do absolutely nothing to dissolve such barriers.
Here the whole magic of a feeling for life which has shed the fetters of utilitarianism was already displayed is one example of the overly pretentious art-speak that is its major failing. It reads as if written for fellow art critics in a “what do you think of this guys?” manner. I found it intensely irritating.
That said for many years I used the book extensively as a valued reference work for the illustrations which are comprehensive and well produced. I did learn something from the book by looking at the illustrations and seeking information elsewhere when I wanted it. If you are looking for a book as an introduction to abstract painting look somewhere else—unless you’re happy with a good picture-book.
