November 1, 1897—The Feast of All Pastor William Spencer dons a deputy’s star to help Grass Flats’ Sheriff Lowry solve a bizarre grave robbery. Someone, or something, torments the wealthy and beautiful widow Marie Courot. Arson, desecrated family tombs and ghoulish talismans plague her. Household members die. Do her persecutors covet her riches, or something more?
William’s investigation descends into a sordid otherworld of witchery and dark magic.
“Once to Die” (Pastor Will Period Mysteries Book 1)” by Thomas Brodeuris an excellent example of storytelling at its best and I enjoyed it very much. This book falls is not only a mystery, it could also be considered a supernatural and a cozy mystery as well. I believe that any reader who enjoys a mystery of any kind will be riveted by this story, and I highly recommend it.
“Once to Die” is a story about Pastor William Everett Spencer. While there are numerous other characters in the book, Pastor Will is the main protagonist and simply a fabulous character. In “Once to Die,” among his many other duties, Will accepts a deputy’s badge and attempts to help the sheriff in his small town during the year 1897 as they investigate a very strange grave robbery. In the beginning, the reader sees this as just a search for a grave robber but, as things quickly progress and someone begins to plague the widow of the man in said grave, this turns into much more than a simple investigation.
As more horrible things happen to the widow, Marie Courot, Pastor Will and Sheriff Lowry find they are up against much more than a simple criminal. With more disturbed graves, arson, and other members of the home dying, this investigation becomes a much bigger puzzle that may have roots in the world of dark magic. How will the pastor and the sheriff solve the crime, and will they survive long enough to do so? Those answers are ones that you will need to find for yourself as you read the story, but I assure you it is well worth it.
In “Once to Die” Thomas Brodeur has given readers a great story. The plot is extremely well-developed and exciting as we are led through many twists and turns that keep everything moving and allow the reader to enjoy each page. In addition, the characters, from Pastor Will to all of the supporting characters, are so captivating you will find yourself caring about them and their situations.
Pastor Will himself is a simply amazing character. He is strong and does not back down in any way from the things that he is facing but there is also a soft and real side to him that makes the reader really root for him. And to top it all off, readers even get a little romance in the story.
“Once to Die” is an excellent example of a very good mystery with a great plot and plenty of great characters. The storyline is creative and riveting and this author did a fabulous job of giving the reader something a little bit different that will hold your attention and keep you excited as the pages turn. I loved it and cannot wait to see what these characters get up to in the next book. “Once to Die” by Thomas Brodeur is one not to miss!
