The Lost Daughters #1

The Italian Daughter

Rate this book
Italy, 1946. “Estee, I bought this ring years ago and have kept it safe ever since. You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved.” She reached for Felix’s hand and gently closed it over the box. “No,” she whispered. “I want you to propose only when you’re truly free.”

London, present day. Lily clutches a faded piece of paper in her hands, knowing that her life will never be the same again. Whilst grieving for her late father, she is told that her grandmother was born at Hope’s House, a home for unmarried mothers, the only clues to her past contained on a handwritten Italian recipe and an old theatre programme.

Desperate for answers, Lily accepts a job on an Italian vineyard in the heart of picturesque Como – a dream her father once shared. Arriving at the palatial home of the Martinelli family, Lily is captivated by the acres of vines that surround her and instantly feels at home. She is also struck by their charming son Antonio and as they chat long into the night over a candlelit dinner, he offers to help Lily discover her family’s heritage.

As Lily unravels the truth of her own legacy, she begins to fall more in love with Italy and with Antonio. And tracing the recipe back to a bakery in a hilltop village, she soon unearths a tragic love story that changes everything…

But when Lily discovers who her grandmother really was, can she too have the courage to follow her heart and leave her old life behind? Or will her family’s heart-wrenching story force her home?

An utterly enchanting and heartbreaking novel about lost loves, family secrets and enduring hope. Perfect for fans of Santa Montefiore, Lucinda Riley and Victoria Hislop. This novel can be enjoyed as a standalone.

I am so excited to be sharing the first book in The Lost Daughters series with you!

The Italian Daughter is a book I wrote during Covid lockdowns, dreaming of travel, fun and romance... the book will take you to a beautiful vineyard in modern day Italy, where you'll fall in love with the absolutely delicious Antonio, and it will also take you back in time. In 1940s Italy, you'll uncover a love story that begins in childhood between Felix and Estee, and despite everything that keeps them apart, theirs is a love that simply cannot be denied.

Keep an eye out for the second book in the series, The Cuban Daughter.

My grandmother was a ballerina in La Scala, and I am in Italy making wine and enjoying the vineyards?

Lily couldn’t believe it. She also couldn’t believe that her grandmother may have been adopted and was a Prima Ballerina.

We meet Estee in 1937 and Lily present day as Lily tries to find about her family's past.

She had some clues from a box she received that was addressed to her grandmother found at a home for unwed mothers.

Was her grandmother the one who was adopted or the one who had a baby out of wedlock.

And…how is she going to find out anything about her grandmother with the few clues she has from the box...a recipe for a chocolate dessert and the name of a theater, La Scala Academy.

When Lily went to Italy and stopped in a bakery with the recipe, the recipe definitely caused a stir when she showed it to the owner of the bakery.

In fact, the owner was furious that Lily had a copy of this recipe that she said has been kept secret for decades.

Want to find out the connection between the recipe, the bakery owner, and La Scala and why the bakery owner was not happy? THE ITALIAN DAUGHTER has all the answers for you.

A lovely read set in romantic Italy…and this book definitely doesn’t lack romance. :)

Loved it….you will cheer and cry along with the characters. 5/5

This book was given to me by Bookouture via NetGalley for an honest review.

This is a lovely story, it is heartbreaking but it also shows how strong love can be and what they will go through to prove that love, come along to Italy and meet the wonderful characters in this story from the 1940’s and present day.

Estee was always going to be a ballerina and it is what she was pushed to do by her mother, it was hard in 1936 pre- war with no friends not much food, when she meets Felix who is two years older than her twelve years and there is an instant connection a true friendship starts and last for many years. Estee gets her chance and becomes a ballerina at La Scala in Milan the only problem she sees is that she will never see Felix again.

But years later after the war it is 1946 and Felix meets up with his beloved Estee, but Felix is due to marry Emilie in an arranged marriage and Felix does not want it to go ahead he wants Estee to be his wife, a choice has to be made and hearts are broken will they ever be mended?

Present day London and Lily is a winemaker and has travelled to many countries learning her trade, she is stopping at home before she starts her new position in Italy and there is a letter from a lawyer about the estate of her late grandmother, she is given a box that has two pieces of paper in it, a program from La Scala and a recipe and this now creates a mystery to be solved, will Lily uncover her grandmother’s past and find answers to what happened all of those years ago and will she find herself and maybe love in Italy, there must be a connection.

This is a beautifully written story that pulled me in from the start the characters are wonderful and the emotions are flying off the pages, it is one that I highly recommend to anyone who loves a good historical and a beautiful romance, and yes there were tears.

My thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for my copy to read and review.

A wonderful story of family and love.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve read several stories to do with family history and finding missing connections lately. When we’re able to gather snippets of clues to find a missing relative it completes not only the family tree but also something within yourself.
This author has crafted a story that touches your emotions on two different levels. Written with a dual point of view, we get a great-grandmother’s story from the past and her great-granddaughter’s story from today.
It’s a romantic and heartwarming tale of lost love and second chances. It’s also a story of letting yourself be open to finding your own path and finding somewhere to call home. It is a story of strength and perseverance, love and light.
The Italian Daughter is a captivating and scenic tour of Italy, tickling your travel fantasy and delighting you with romance across the ages. This one is a wonderful story that is both heartbreaking and emotional, but healing and touching too. Lane pours out her heart with this beautiful story! Not to be missed!
In this heartbreaking story, In 1945 Lake Como, Estee shows amazing strength of character. Estee started off as a young ballerina with hopes of joining La Scala, a highly sought after ballet company. With a very demanding mother, and a new friendship struck with Felix, Estee finds herself torn more than once. As a child, she has big dreams, and was being taught by her mother that winning came at a price. Thankfully, she struck up a friendship with 14-year-old Felix when she was 12 years old. Her story continues with heartbreak, love and loss.
In present day London, we have Lily, who has just come back from New Zealand. Lily is a winemaker who travels to different countries learning every nuance involved in the making of wine. She got her love for winemaking from her father, and has been following her dreams ever since. Grapes, soil and every aspect of winemaking comes naturally to Lily. Lily is hoping to make another trip, but before she sets out, she finds an odd note among her grandmother's belongings. This leads her to a box that bore her grandmother's name. The contents of that box will change Lily's life forever.
Lily is about to take on a new job, working with a winegrower and his family in the Como region in Italy. Perhaps this is fortuitous, as the contents of the box she found proves that her grandmother may have been Italian. While heading off to Italy for the next several months, she hopes to ask around to try and dig up things about her grandmother's past. More than finding answers, Lily also meets Antonio, the winegrower's son in Como, and she just might finally take a chance with her heart.
Estee from 1945. Lily from present day. In what ways do their lives converge? While Lily's story was one of hope, it was Estee's story that broke my heart into pieces more than once. We find how Estee's relationship with Felix began, flourished and floundered. Along the way we realize how her heart was fully his at a time when he could not offer her the same, although the love he had for her was palpable. It was this book that finally made me understand why certain decisions are made when they come with good and altruistic reasons.
The Italian Daughter is book one in the The Lost Daughters series by Soraya M. Lane. I was fully enthralled with this story and could not put it down. I got this ebook also as an audiobook which was expertly narrated by Zoe Mills. Listening to this book brought both sadness and joy, and the narrator did a fabulous job helping my emotions to ride that roller coaster of all the feels. This wonderful story wrapped up with a wonderful conclusion and now I cannot wait for book two in this series, which I believe will be The Sugar King's Daughter. That second book will also be in dual timeline fashion.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Story is told in two timeline from the POV of Lily, a winemaker and Estee, a dancer.
Then ~ 1938 Italy - Estee, Lily’s Great Grandmother is training to be a professional dancer, it is something she wants although, the pressure her mother applies is cruel.
She and Felix, the son of a baker fall in love. However Felix’s family wants him to marry into a prominent family and has arranged his marriage.
Now ~ While Lily is In the US, she is given a box with a recipe in a theatre program from Teatro Alla Scala in Milan. The recipe is for a dessert made of chocolate and hazelnuts. Lily knows this is a message calling her to Italy.
She has recently started a new job with a well know winery. She and the owner’s son take a holiday to learn more about wine business but also find out the bakery where the recipe originated as she believe is will provide her with more about her great grandmother.
(Note: Is it me or does the recipe remind you of Nutella? Which I love and will
eat right out of the jar!)
I know you will love these characters especially Estee and Lily as much as I did!
This story stole my heart!
Soraya Lane is new to me and I am happy I found her!
In addition, to this beautiful as well as very clever story, I enjoyed narrator Zoe Mills and her performances of the characters!
This is the first book in a new series.
I am definitely looking forward to Book #2.
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this early eGalley.
Visiskai mano knyga, siltas, jautrus pasakojimas. Vel praeitis ir dabartis pasakojama kartu. Labai patiko! Deja, iki Riley seseru serijos toli ir negalejau nelyginti. Taip pat siek tiek erzino laaaaabai daug sutapimu, nezinau, ar taip buna gyvenime 🫣 o dar stereotipai, kad visos nescios turi vemti ir 2,5 men jau apvalejama.. 😆 bet labai laukiu kitu daliu!
2 🌟 Reseña completa: https://masromance.blogspot.com/2023/...
No soy muy fan de este tipo de novelas. Ni, de Lucinda Riley tampoco, pero es que esta autora por mucho que intenten compararla, no tiene color. Es una forma burda de incrementar ventas y de que lectoras que disfrutan de la sra. Riley, caigan
Estilo correcto pero con algunos detalles argumentales que no me han cuadrado. Personajes poco desarrollados, con historias poco desarrolladas y un misterio que se desvela a la mitad de la novela. Las cosas no encajan, la investigación es tan simple y suertuda que pasa a un tercer plano y, en realidad, es como si la autora contara dos historias que tienen un punto en común pero que si no lo tuvieran sería totalmente igual.
Importancia del mundo vinícola y del ballet por partes iguales.
Fundido en negro de las escenas de cama
Drama gratuito que no me ha emocionado, no he conectado con el estilo de la autora.
Para las amantes de este tipo de novelas
Tengo muy claro que no voy a seguir con la serie, ahora que sé lo que las relaciona, se pueden leer de forma totalmente independiente
Vos tik pabaigiau garsiąją L.Riley Septynių seserų seriją, gavau naują alternatyvą - pasakojimų ciklą apie šešias moteris, netikėtai sukviestas į advokatų kontorą ir gavusias dežutes su užuominomis apie jų giminės paslaptis. Pirmoji iš jų - Lili, kurią dėžutėje rastos nuorodos atveda į Italiją.
Knygoje dvi pasakojimo linijos - vienoje, Lili bandymai sekti rastais pėdsakais ir darbas vynuogyne, kitoje - pasakojimas apie jauną merginą, vardu Estė ir jos balerinos karjerą garsiąjame La Scalos teatre.
Abi pasakojimo linijos buvo vienodai įdomios - vieną puikiai papildė nuostabioji Italija, vynuogynai ir graži romantiška istorija, kitą - daug skausmingesnis ir tikrai neįprastai pasisukęs veikėjų likimas.
Autorės rašymo stilius primena N.Pellegrino - pasakojimas labai lengvas, istorijos idealiai tinka atostogoms ir puikiai atskleidžia Italijos grožį ir išskirtinumą. Aišku, be dramos čia neapsieita, bet Telemundo presenta nepriminė - žmonės darė klaidas, priėmė sprendimus, kurie tą akimirką atrodė geriausi, skaudžiai nudegė, bet vistiek stojosi ir bandė gyventi toliau.
Pirmoji dalis man labai patiko ir jau nekantrauju, kada galėsiu susipažinti su likusiomis istorijomis - mačiau, kad laukia kelionės į Kubą, Graikiją, Šveicariją...
Dla miłośników twórczości nieodżałowanej Lucindy Riley i jej kultowej uwielbianej serii Siedem Sióstr. Tutaj mamy córki. Utracone Córki z różnych stron świata. Autorka zaplanowała serię na osiem tomów, a jak dotąd pojawiło się ich pięć: „Córka z Włoch”, „Córka z Kuby”, „Córka z Grecji”, „Córka z Genewy”, „Córka z Paryża”. Oczywiście, ta seria jest kobieca, jest dramatyczna, każdy tom ma dwie płaszczyzny czasowe i bohaterki, które odkrywają tajemnice swojej tożsamości w najpiękniejszych możliwych zakątkach świata.
Cała seria wciąż trwa, ale podsumowując: „Utracone Córki” porusza tematykę tożsamości, dziedzictwa i siły kobiecych więzi międzypokoleniowych. Każda książka opowiada o współczesnej kobiecie, która odkrywa sekrety swojej przeszłości, podróżując w różne miejsca świata i śledząc losy swoich przodków. Mamy tu poszukiwanie korzeni, tajemnice rodzinne, siłę miłości, oddania i wreszcie – siłę samych kobiet. Jest wzruszająco, jest refleksyjnie, ale leciuchno jak piórko.
Another incredible read from this talented storyteller. I was hooked from the first until the emotional finish. The raw emotion throughout had me in tears. Vineyards, ballet, theatres, and other surroundings are painted in the most descriptive prose. The author successfully creates a diverse cast of characters, assisted by realistic dialogue. I highly recommend this book.
Labai graži ir šilta istorija. Pradėdama skaityti nesitikėjau, kad taip jaukiai susiskaitys knyga.
Tai „Prarastųjų dukrų“ serijos pirmoji dalis. Veiksmas vyksta dvejomis skirtingomis laiko juostomis. Vienoje laiko juostoje pasakojama apie jauną merginą Estę, gyvenančią Italijoje. Jauna, perspektyvi balerina įsimyli berniuką, tačiau jie negali būti kartu. Bet likimas ir vėl juos suveda, rodos, tik tam, kad dar sykį išskirtų... Kitoje laiko juostoje veiksmas vyksta dabartiniais laikais, Londone. Lili ruošiasi vykti dirbti į Italijos vynuogynus kai netikėtai jos rankose atsiduria paslaptinga dėžutė su šeimos paslaptimis. Ir tos paslaptys veda taip pat į Italiją. Pasinaudodama proga, kad ji yra Italijoje, bando atskleisti šeimos paslaptis. Žinoma, meilės ir romantikos netrūksta beieškant užuominų į paslaptis.
Paprasta, bet labai šilta istorija. Nors didelių siužeto vingių nebuvo, tačiau knyga nuo pat pirmo puslapio skaitėsi lengvai ir įtraukiančiai. Abi pasakojimo linijos buvo įdomios, Italijos vynuogynai aprašomi nuostabiai, net pati užsinorėjau ten atsidurti.
Italija. Vynuogynų laukai. Žemės kvapas, aukštai virš horizonto pakilusi saulė. Kalnai fone, paukščių garsai ausyse. Ir juokas, daug rankų mosavimo, pakelti balsai ir nenumaldomas juokas keliant vyno taures ir kalbantis apie amore, vino ir bella vita!
Lili gauna seną, jos močiutei priklausiusią dėžutę su smulkmenomis joje ir jauna moteris užsinori išsiaiškinti visas paslaptis. Tam ji ryžtasi išvykti į Italiją, kur ją darbuotis vynuogyne priima itin žavaus vyndario Antonijaus šeima. Be darbo vynuogyne ir paslapčių kapstymo Lili čia atranda gerokai daugiau, nei būtų galėjusi numanyti.
Žavi knyga, tokia šilta, miela, be žiaurumo, be gyvenimą vartančių paslapčių, bet su daug žmogiškų klaidų, nesusikalbėjimo ir nemokėjimo kovoti už save. Kita vertus - ne visi gali ryžtis kovoti su tais, kurie turėtų būti patys brangiausi, tad ir smerkti vis tik sunku.
Rašytoja puikiai perteikia Italijos dvasią. Tiesiog puikiai. Skaičiau ir vietomis pati jaučiau, lyg vaikščiočiau tomis lysvėmis ir ragaučiau uogas - ar jau? Ar jau laikas? Ar galima skinti?
Kiek mačiau, autorė yra parašiusi visą seriją panašių romanų, tad su malonumu skaitysiu ir kitus, keliausiu po naujas vietas, atrasiu naujus skonius, kvapus ir veikėjus. Tokios šiltos, jaukios istorijos puikiai tinka lietingiems vakarams ir įkvepia keliauti, norėti, eiti, kopti. Ir mokytis iš veikėjų, jog tam tikri sprendimai gyvenimus pakeičia negrįžtamai.
Leidyklos dovana.
Net neabejoju, jog pažvelgus į knygos viršelį ir Jūs nejučia nusikeliate į saulėtus bei nuostabaus grožio Italijos vynuogynus. Skaitant šią knygą tikrai puikiai pajusite Italijos dvasią. Net jeigu ir Italijoje lankytia dar neteko, manau, jog po šios knygos tikrai norėsie šią šalį aplankyti. Bent aš tai tikrai! 😍
Labai paprasta, šilta bei jautri istorija. Knyga nuo pat pirmojo puslapio skaitėsi lengvai ir įtraukiančiai. Labai knietėjo sužinoti kaip vis dėlto susiklostys tolimesnis Estės ir Felikso gyvenimas. O tuo pačiu ir Lili likimas.
Nors didelių siužeto vingių nebuvo, vietomis tikrai nuspėjama istorija, tačiau nesuklysiu sakydama, jog kartais labai reikia būtent ir tokių knygų!
Panašu, jog greitu metu sulauksime ir šios serijos tęsinio. Mielai pažintį su šia serija pratęsiu ir toliau.
Tad jeigu ieškote širdį sušildančios bei suvirpinančios istorijos, rekomenduoju Jums "Dukra iš Italijos".
One of my favourite historical fiction authors is launching a new series of 8 books, The Lost Daughters. Each book in the series will be a dual timeline and will focus on one of the group of women who are called to a London lawyer’s office. These women are told that their grandmothers were born at Hope House, a home for unwed mothers, and are each given a letter and a box containing clues about their past - one none of them even knew they were searching for before arriving in the office.
The Italian Daughter is the first in the series and is set in Tuscany in 1937 and London in present day. In the 1930s timeline, the author introduces readers to soulmates, Felix and Estee, who are torn apart by family loyalty. Estee is being groomed as a prima ballerina in hopes of being accepted at the most prestigious dance academy in Italy - La Scala. When she meets the baker’s son, Felix Barbieri, it’s love at first sight. The two have an intense connection and have no doubt that their future is with each other. Unfortunately, social standing and parental expectations stand in their way.
In the present day timeline, we meet another lost daughter who is trying to find her way in the world after her dad’s death and her mother’s new relationship. After studying winemaking in Australia, Lily agrees to help with harvesting at the Martinelli winery in Lake Como. Lily is one of the women who’ve met with the London lawyer and she hopes to uncover more of her grandmother’s secrets while she is in Italy.
As she slowly stitches the two timelines together, Lane explores the notion that it’s important to live in the moment and be open to what life can teach us when we are willing to enjoy what we can control, rather than spending energy on what is out of our hands. Both women are changed by their time in Italy, they meet family and people who change the way they look at the world and change the way they feel about love. It truly is an enchanting novel that highlights following your heart, uncovering family secrets and coping with lost love.
You’ll love this book and will be longing for an espresso and a saccottini al cioccolato as you read. I think you’ll be like me and wish you had a friend who leaves treats worthy of the gods on your bed, too.
I’m so excited to travel to Cuba in Lane’s next installment in this series. More importantly, YOU need to read this book and discover why Soraya Lane is an auto-read author for me.
I was gifted this advance copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
"we have lucinda riley at home"
the author read seven sisters and went "i can write that" and, spoiler alert, she in fact could not.
everything in this book is insta, the romantic relationships are instalove, everyone immediately absolutely adored the MC, she found out about the past with no effort at all, everything gets resolved right away..
there are no struggles, she doesn't even care that much about the past because the stakes have never been lower but the readers are supposed to care?
it's just so shallow, every character has one assigned personal trait and are just cardboard cut outs. and okay, i get it, you think every single italian dude is a sizzling hot hunk and every woman is a goddess from the heavens. but fear not, my dear reader, the MC is also a very special snowflake girlie so all these divine italians are taken aback by her talents or whatevr.
this book is a nothingburger for me. i don't understand the raving reviews at all.
1937: A ballerina on the stage. A young boy captivated by her grace. The love of their lifetimes.
Spanning over years of stolen moments, hidden sweets, secret kisses, grief and betrayals but most importantly infinite riches, it tells the story of Estee and Felix.
Present Day: A winemaker on her quest to unearth a secret buried for years, to find what links her father's side of heritage to Italy. In the vineyard, under the Italian sun, while she learns of her great-grandparents' past, she just might also stumble upon a family and love of her own.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘳 tells the tale of two woman, tested by life, but who remained true to themselves and became stronger even as they withstood the best of the worst.
I have to say that this was quite an emotionally enthralling read.
The writing, while there was a lack of inner monologue, was deliciously poetic. I was able to immediately connect with the characters in both eras and never once did I faze out of any timeline.
As of the characters, I think as I mentioned above, Estee and Lily were both fierce, determined and exceptional woman who endured so much, be it the loss of a child or a father, and they were stronger because of it.
Their respective love stories were also just as exhilarating despite all that held them apart from loving and breathing freely. Although, I wish it was a bit more justified why Estee fell in love with Felix and Lily fell for Antonio.
The start of a new seven part series each a dual timeline focusing on seven women brought together by Hopes House.
In this first novel, in present day we meet Lily who is called to a Lawyers office and given a box with a programme from La Scala theatre in Milan and a recipe in it. What connection does this have to a grandmother she didnt realise had been adopted. Having accepted a seasonal job at a vineyard in Italy she sees it as the perfect opportunity to investigate further.
In 1946 we meet Estee and Felix, forbidden lovers who have known each other since Estee was a young child auditioning to join La Scala as a ballerina. But Felix is betrothed to someone else and Estee refuses to be his mistress. Do they have a future together or ate they meant to be apart.
This is a wonderful novel and it promises to be a lovely series. Both timelines flowed seamlessly and each of them had a wonderful story. Full of love and hope.
Fans of Lucinda Riley will love this series. I can't wait to read the next one
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the chance to read this advanced copy, my opinions are my own and not expected
Piëmont, 1937. Wanneer de 12-jarige, talentvolle Estee na een optreden als ballerina Felix ontmoet, hebben ze meteen een klik. Maar haar moeder verbiedt iedere afleiding die in de weg zou kunnen staan van haar weg naar de top en Felix, erfgenaam van een bakkerij-imperium, is al uitgehuwelijkt aan een ander. In de jaren die volgen komen ze elkaar regelmatig tegen, groeit hun liefde maar worden ze ook weer uiteengedreven door verplichtingen en bemoeienissen. Zullen ze ooit samen kunnen zijn?
Londen, heden. Lily, een jonge wijnmaker, wordt nieuwsgierig als ze een brief vindt die is gericht aan de erfgenamen van haar oma, en na een afspraak bij een advocaat ontvangt ze een geheimzinnig kistje. Dat bevat documenten die haar onder andere naar het wereldberoemde theater La Scala in Milaan leiden, en aangezien ze toch afreist naar het Comomeer, om daar in de leer te gaan bij de legendarische familie Martinelli, is dit de uitgelezen kans om ook meer te weten te komen over haar verleden. Wat zal ze aantreffen nadat ze het spoor heeft gevolgd? En waarom voelt ze zich meteen thuis in Italië? Heeft dat met haar droomwerkzaamheden en haar familiegeschiedenis te maken of toch ook met Antonio, de knappe zoon van de wijnmaker?
Terwijl je heen en weer springt tussen het heden en het verleden leer je de kleurrijke personages steeds beter kennen, ga je met hen meeleven omdat je hun verschillende emoties voelt, kom je achter lang bewaarde geheimen en word je helemaal meegenomen dit verhaal vol (verboden) liefde, persoonlijke ontwikkeling, doorzettingsvermogen en twijfels, passie, verplichtingen, herinneringen, verdriet, hoop en mysterie. De personages worden realistisch en levensecht neergezet, ze dromen, hebben ambitie en willen het liefst hun gevoel volgen maar worden daarin nog wel eens tegengehouden door traditie, verwachtingen, ultimatums of zelf opgelegde toekomstbeelden. Ze zijn krachtig en stellen zich open, al is dat door eerdere ervaringen niet altijd even makkelijk, ze moeten een aantal moeilijke beslissingen nemen en Soraya Lane schrijft met veel liefde over hun beroepen, waardoor ook die onderdelen van het verhaal echt gaan leven.
Beide verhaallijnen zijn interessant, worden sterk uitgewerkt en vloeien naadloos in elkaar over, waardoor ze een mooi geheel vormen. Ze bevatten een lichte voorspelbaarheid, vooral in de romantische verhaallijnen, maar dat stoort geen moment omdat de auteur op de juiste momenten kleine verrassingen en extra verdieping toevoegt, en hoewel ik sommige acties van Estee niet helemaal kon rijmen met haar leeftijd, heb ik vooral genoten van dit verhaal dat je van begin tot einde boeit. Door de beeldende stijl waan je je helemaal in Italië, het is fijn, warm, erg vlot en sfeervol geschreven, de hoofdstukken zijn kort en ze bevatten regelmatig kleine cliffhangers, waardoor je echt door het boek heen vliegt omdat je telkens móét weten hoe het verdergaat. De bijzondere familiegeschiedenis zal je raken en dit meeslepende, liefdevolle verhaal is een veelbelovend begin van deze nieuwe serie. Ik kan ‘m alleen maar aanraden!
I was thrilled to get this advanced copy from one of my favorite authors. She is starting this new series called The Lost Daughters. As always Lane delivers one of the best historical fiction novels in the historical fiction genre. I can always count on a new view and keeps me engrossed in her books.
I enjoyed the dual time line. A group of women are called into a lawyer’s office in London. They are each told that their grandmothers were unwed mothers who delivered babies at the Hope House. They are given a letter and box with momentous of their past. Can they dig into their past? Will they find out what they are looking for?
1940’s-Felix and Estee fall in love during childhood and their future takes many complicated turns. Estee is a ballerina with dreams of joining a ballet company. Her mother is very demanding and Estee’s friendship with Felix gives her some balance, and gives her hope of unconditional love.
4/5⭐️
Italija, šiltas oras, graži aplinka, vynuogynai, meilė ir paslaptis siekianti net Antrojo Pasaulinio karo laikotarpį. Autorė S. Lane įtrauks mus į tikrą jausmingų įvykių verpėtą, o ir nenutrauks taip greit. ,,Dukra iš Italijos" „Prarastų dukrų“ serijos pradžia ir ji tikrai puiki. Šešios nepažįstamos moterys – Lili, Džordžija, Klaudija, Ela, Bleik ir Rouzė – į teisininkų kontorą atėjo nenutuokdamos, kodėl buvo čia sukviestos nors yra nepažįstamos ir iš pirmo žvilgsnio nieko bendro neturi.
Lili iš teisininkų kontoros kaip ir kitos merginos išeina nešina paslaptinga dėžute. Jos nedidelės, tačiau slepia labai senas paslaptis. Lili pirmoji susigundo keliauti į Italiją ieškoti atsakymų, nors pateiktos užuomenos tarpusavyje visiškai nesusijusios.
Dvi laiko juostos dabartis kurioje Lili ieško atsakymų ir bando pati susitvarkyti savo gyvenimą, o praeityje Etsė ir Feliksas. Du jaunuoliai beprotiškai pamilę vienas kitą dar nuo pat mažumės. Jų keliai išsiskiria ir vėl susieina. Estė turi pildyti šeimos svajonę ir tapti baleriną, o Feliksas turėtų perimti šeimos verslą ir vesti mamos parinktą merginą, bet kaip įsakyti širdžiai...
Lili močiutė, gimė netekėjusių moterų pensione ir buvo atiduota įvaikinti. Ir nors tarsi jauna mergina bando atrasti atsakymus į praeities klausimus, didelė tikimybė, kad paieškos ją nuves kur kas toliau nei galėjo iš pradžių įsivaizduoti.
Pakankamai lengvai skaitomas romanas. Grįžimas į praeitį papasakos istoriją apie dviejų žmonių meilę ir tai kaip ji baigėsi. ,,La Scala" teatro užkulisiai bei pasirodymai puikiai perteikti, tarsi atgijo knygos puslapiuose, kartu su mažais Italijos miesteliais. Istorijos mylėtojams labai turėtų patikti ši knyga, nes teatras kuriam skirta daug dėmesio yra dienas žinomiausių pasaulyje ir veikia iki pat šiol nors įkurtas 1778 metais.
Ik ben begonnen in dit boek met een dubbel gevoel... voor de liefhebbers van de zeven zussen stond er! Dus heel benieuwd was ik. Het voelde bijna een beetje als "verraad" haha. Maar eenmaal aan het lezen, wilde ik ook alleen naar blijven lezen. Het is dus echt voor de liefhebber van de zeven zussen. Sterker nog.. het komt er wel heel dicht in de buurt. Leuk!!
Captivating, heartwarming, and absorbing!
The Italian Daughter is predominantly set in Italy during the late 1930s, as well as present day, and is told from two different perspectives. Lily, a young woman who journeys to Italy to honour her father and work at a renowned vineyard while also unravelling the secrets surrounding her grandmother’s parentage and conception, and Estee, a beautiful ballerina whose love for the son of a bakery owner promised to another will ultimately change her destiny and life forever.
The prose is eloquent and expressive. The characters are troubled, determined, and endearing. And the plot is a moving tale about life, love, loss, emotion, betrayal, family, friendship, heartbreak, guilt, grief, hope, and regret.
Overall, The Italian Daughter is a rich, alluring, compelling tale by Lane that highlights the enduring passion, loyalty and power of love and is a wonderful choice for anyone who enjoys a dual timeline story with both a sliver of romance and mystique.
Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for gifting me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Deși structura seriei se apropie periculos de tare de celebrele "7 surori" ale Lucindei Riley, Soraya Lane reușește o ficțiune istorică suficient de bună încât să mă îndepărteze de suspiciunile inițiale.
CE MI-A PLĂCUT:
- Italia. Lăsând la o parte iubirea mea pentru Italia, mereu mă bucur când o găsesc descrisă-n cărți: mâncare îmbietoare, locuri perfecte de vizitat, atmosferă tipică și oameni relaxați;
- povestea lui Estee e dureroasă și surprinzător de dură, dar totodată captivantă și plină de profunzimea pe care o tot caut în romanele de dragoste;
- personajele nu sunt deloc menajate, mai ales cele din planul trecut. Le urmărim greșelile și modul în care pedepsele li se aplică vreme îndelungată, dar sunt și victime ale perioadei și ale mentalității generale.
- prezentul își are și el propria poveste de dragoste care vine cu provocările ei;
- ritmul m-a purtat plăcut prin poveste și scriitura fluidă a autoarei mi-a adus o experiență foarte plăcută;
CE NU MI-A PLĂCUT:
- aș fi vrut să văd mai multă profunzime în planul prezent. Știu că în 99% din cazuri accentul cade asupra întâmplărilor din trecut, but a girl can hope...
Sunt nerăbdătoare să citesc următoarele volume!!!
