Context is everything. Yes, but I cringe when I read a passage in which a man is described as in his 40s -- then in the next paragraph see him referred to as "elderly"! There is a perhaps apocryphal story that F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, in a book apparently never published, "She was a faded but still lovely woman of twenty-seven.” "Boothill Town" has its first copyright in 1957, but even all those decades ago, 40 was not "elderly"! Still, beyond and despite that ridiculous passage, this is a good book, with an intriguing premise that leads to a logical and reasonable story. Prospectors hit their dream find, make ambitious plans, and even help others to participate in the strike. There are similarities to the history of Tombstone, likely on purpose, but that in no way detracts from this story. This is my first book by Leslie Scott, but I'll certainly be looking for more. I have no hesitation in recommending "Boothill Town."
