Whether you’re just beginning a relationship with Jesus or you’ve been a follower of Jesus for a long while, many of us have a hard time translating the truths we believe in our mind, to the reality of our everyday life. Given our tendency to wander away from God, we need both encouragement and tools to keep the gospel at the center of our action in the everyday stuff of our lives. This 8-week guide offers an all-of-life approach to being disciples who make disciples of Jesus. The questions, activities, prayers, and exercises will prompt you to do exactly that—put your thoughts and theology into hands-on practice. Designed for both group and individual use, each week will build on the next, aligning your heart with the will of God, examining your core identity beliefs, and launching you into mission. When God’s people commit together to sow gospel seeds in the everyday rhythms of life, a ripple effect moves through our lives, out toward the whole earth, saturating it with the good news of Jesus.
Jeff Vanderstelt is the visionary leader of the Soma Family of Churches. He also serves as one of the teachers and elders of Soma Tacoma. He is the author of Saturate: Being Disciples of Jesus in the Everyday Stuff of Life. He lives in Tacoma, Washington with his wife, Jayne, and their three kids.
I liked the idea of using the Field Guide to get across the same information as the book did, and so in theory I think this a good way to get the information across. My biggest complaint would be that the questions to answer each week get repetitive by the end of the book, so I feel like we just repeat the same thing at several points. Over all though I did enjoy going through the material. 3 stars because I don't fully consider this a book, so I don't want to overrate it.
Helpful. Fills in some of the gaps in the original book. I gave this a quick read to get familiar with the content. A good review of 'Saturate' and provoking discussion questions.
Let me start by saying, I would consider this Field Guide to be a must read for anyone seeking to follow Jesus in everyday life and lead others to do the same. Also a must read for anyone seeking to launch missional communities or even communities that live on mission.
Over the course of the last 8 weeks, I have had the privilege of interacting with this resource and continue to challenge my views and perspectives of Jesus and living for him on a daily basis in a way that influences others.
The Saturate Field Guide is more than a book. I love how interactive it is and that it is designed for either individual or group study. More than a study, the Saturate Field Guide is a resource that will change you in a meaningful way while challenging your perspectives on church, Jesus, and how you engage with the world around you on a day to day basis. Vanderstelt and Conneley do a great job bringing together past, present and future orientation of how Jesus changes us and how we live this out in the rhythms of our everyday lives. The vision that drives this is All God’s people, everywhere, filling everyday life with God’s presence.
This resource provides a helpful framework that lives beyond the pages itself and if taken to heart and acted upon can change the way you view and engage with the world around you. The questions that are used on a daily basis throughout this Field Guide will challenge your perspective and lead you toward putting into action what you are learning. Regardless of where you are in your journey of finding and following God the questions and activities contained throughout this Field Guide will challenge you!
Vanderstelt and Conneley do a great job centering the focus on Jesus and His power to change us as they state, “Jesus did it better, Jesus does it better, and Jesus will make it better. You need to believe the gospel to step out and obey it.” It is from this centering perspective that we learn essential elements of our identity as a family, a servant, and a missionary. And we live out this identity in the everyday rhythms of life which are summarized in easy to remember phrases: Eat, Celebrate, Recreate, Listen, Story, & Bless.
The Field Guide follows a rhythm of journaling and learning activities on a daily basis throughout the 8 weeks that move from Day 1: Start (a brief overview of that week’s theme), Day 2: Read (a few Biblical passages to read and mark up followed by questions to answer), Day 3: Think (introspective questions and activities) , Day 4: Pray (guided prayer exercises), Day 5: Do (a few action items, case studies, and/or activities to put the week’s theme into practice), Day 6: Meet (based on preparation and experiences each week to be used in the community walking through the guide with you) and Day 7: Floating Day of Rest (day off to encourage readers to rest and celebrate God’s goodness).
Whether you’re just beginning a relationship with Jesus or you’ve been a follower of Jesus for a long while, many of us have a hard time translating the truths we believe in our mind, to the reality of our everyday life. My Review:
Some of us require a daily planner so coordinate our days. It is just how we are wired. So the author of Saturate, a great book on discipleship, put together a field guide perfect for those of us that need a little push or those of us that would like to get back on track. The field guide is a 8 week journey to living better for Christ. In order to 'saturate" yourself in Jesus, you need to dig into Him each and every day to a point of overindulgence but this time overindulgence is a good thing. It helps us to grow and to stretch God farther than we ever imagined just by simply doing it in ourselves first.
So for 8 weeks you have a segment to read along with thought provoking questions that get you to thinking more about becoming a disciple and to help with your spiritual growth. With a notion to better equip you to move outside of your comfort zone and to help equip others. So you can use this indiviually or in a group setting. I love some of the great questions that the authors ask, it really gets you grounded into discipleship and serving others.
A great field guide that takes you beyond your normal every day boundaries and gets you to extend past the norm. Great for individuals or use in a group setting!
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author.
This book and study opened my eyes to how not only how I am already discipling others but how I can disciple others in new ways. Church is not about a building or something we do once or twice a week but it's really a state of mind and who we are as God's people.
SATURATE, the book, was such an easy read and really spoke to my heart about how I can reach out to others just by inviting them into my every day life. I loved how the author showed how Jesus and the believers discipled others through meals, events, and parties. We can reach out to people and show them the love of God through sharing our lives with them. Showing kindness and sharing meals and opening conversations to talk about the Lord.
SATURATE, FIELD GUIDE is a study that you can do alone but would be much better in a group. It is a beautiful study that is wire bound and hard covered so you can sit anywhere to read and answer the questions. I loved this study because it made me think about what I think it means to be a disciple. It asks indepth questions that not only brought me closer to the Lord, but showed me ways that I can bring others closer to him.
Honestly, every church and church leader should be reading these books and doing the study and then offering it in their churches. It would change the churches in ways that would be profound and truly be as the Lord Jesus wants our churches to be!
I really loved both these books and, while I did read through the study, I am now starting over and doing the study for myself. I know both these books will remain in my possession forever so I can re-visit them from time to time and make sure I am being a true disciple for the Lord. I highly recommend these books and they both deserve 5 stars.

This is a very in depth book on this issue of being disciples of Jesus in every day life. I started looking through it was amazed at the work and thought these two guys put into it.
The book is geared for a group study, but as I have looked over it I can't see why it can't be done solo also.
It starts out with an introduction and some questions to answer to get you thinking about discipleship. That is followed by a suggested outline for the first meeting of a group going through the book. After that, it launches into week one of the book.
Each week focuses on a different aspect/subject: Week 1: Jesus Week 2: Discipleship And so on.
Each week covers approximately 40 pages, split up into 7 days with reading material and questions for the Monday through Saturday with Sunday being set aside to rest.
The book itself is a large spiral bound book wider than the average book by at least 50%.
I have not done any of the lessons and questions yet, but I have spent time looking through it and this is a wonderful resource to help Christians. The questions require actual thought, and there is a lot of great advice in and input for Christians wanting to do better with this discipleship thing in today's world. This is an extremely well done book, and I'd recommend it for group or individual study.
This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review.
This Guide is what it says - A Guide; and it is meant to be read along with the book, Saturate. I read the book several months ago and then obtained the Guide and 'worked' it on a weekly basis. There is certainly some good stuff in the book, Saturate, and in this Guide, for those new to the teachings of Jesus and as a reminder to established Christians. The questions could assist in helping a new Christian to think out all the details and learn to put them into practice on a weekly basis. I found both the book and the Guide had a lot of repetition.
While the Rhythms listed in the book: Eat, Celebrate, Recreate, Listen, Story, Bless are all great Rhythms to have in one's Christian walk, I was disappointed that Prayer was not listed as the main Rhythm. The authors, Jeff Vanderstelt and Ben Connelly, do mention prayer on a regular basis listing various Psalms and other Historic prayers, which may help the a new Christian to establish a prayer routine. If the authors should ever do a rewrite on this Guide, I think it would be much more helpful to encourage, guide and teach young Christians to pray to God with their own words in a heartfelt and meaningful way using words that are familiar to them.
This book is a fantastic companion to the Saturate book, but even works great as a standalone. It has an incredibly practical and devotional format in tackling each concept individually through study, prayer, and thinking as well as group discussion and discipleship. I cannot recommend this book enough. Before our church launched, we began this book together and allowed it to inform and shape our practices, and it has been fundamental to knitting us together in unity towards the mission of disciple making. Whether you are starting a new church or attempting to restore an old one, this book is a great tool to providing an easy to understand, easy to put into practice guide to returning to what the Bible says about the Church.
I haven't gone through this entire book in depth, but man! Just the parts I have gone over are just wonderful. The "Saturate Field Guide" is a HUGE spiral book with tons of color on every single page. There is nothing boring about the layout of this book, which is awesome since most studies I've done-the books are just black and white.
Discipleship is a lost art in many churches let's face that, and this is could be a huge help for those that are feeling like they need just a bit... more. I can't wait for the hubs and I to take this together week by week. I know we won't be disappointed.
