Rate this book
Alexandra arrives without explanation at the home of the McPhails, a university faculty family in Virginia. As Alexandra pursues her search for her identity, she helps her “adopted” family achieve an honest self-awareness. Mrs. McPhail, who is at odds with her roles of wife and mother, must face a secret she has carried throughout her married life. (The book was adapted by CBS as a 90-minute feature of the same name for its GE Theater television series in 1977, which featured Valerie Mahaffey and Barbara Barrie in the principal roles.)

Alexandra shows up the McPhail's house & says she's the daughter Mrs. McPhail gave birth to before she was married. She tells her family that Alexandra is her niece. If word got out, she feared what people would think as well as how it would affect her chances of being elected to office.
In time the truth comes out & having Alexandra's presence causes the family to look at themselves and how they are otherwise untruthful.
