Mercer Mayer is an American children's author and illustrator. He has published over 300 books, using a wide range of illustrative styles. Mayer is best known for his Little Critter and Little Monster series of books.
I am happy to encourage my niece's enthusiasm for dinosaurs, but I feel the plot here gives an unrealistic perspective on how museums work. (Yes, I know, I Am Not The Right Audience.)
Not one of my favourites. What bugs me the most about this story is that Little Critter continually disobeys the rules but gets rewarded for it in the end.
This little critters book follows the main character on his field trip to a natural history museum. He said he wanted to be a dinosaur hunter when he grows up. But when he got inside, he saw that the dinosaur exhibit was closed. We see him getting into trouble throughout the museum by disobeying signs plastered throughout and the guard catches him. He asks the guard why the exhibit was closed and he said a triceratop bone was missing. Even though they go to different areas in the museum, he was still searching for the missing dinosaur bone. When he went to go get a drink of water from the fountain, he found the dinosaur exhibit, and despite the big sign saying closed, he went in. He got caught by a guard who told him to leave but just as he was about to, he found the missing bone. Though this was a cute story, it irks me that he blatantly disregarded signs put up. I know I am not the intended audience but I would not want kids to get the wrong idea in a museum.
Basic Plot: Little Critter searches the museum for a lost bone.
I love Mercer Mayer's art style. The pictures are always packed with interesting, little tidbits to look at and the stories are cute. This one was no different than that, and had the Critter's curiosity do something good for him in the end.
Little Critter goes to the museum. The Dinosaur exhibit is closed due to a missing bone. Critter finds it underneath a different dinosaur. Pretty unbelievable. I don't expect kids to be that naive, but the pictures are cute.
This one is a bit lost in the annuals of time. I love the story for the realism with some aspects, yet equally begrudge the unrealistic way the plot is started and finished. My son appreciates finding the spider or mouse in the pictures.

My review: I have always been a fan of the Little Critter books, there were a huge part of my childhood and am now making them a big part of my son's. Munchkin really loves dinosaurs so thought this would be a fun book for him. There ended up not being a whole lot of dinosaurs for him to enjoy but he still had fun with the book and of course finding the mouse and spider in the pictures.
I grew up with the Little Critter books and I was happy to find that this newer one is just as wonderful as the ones I read as a kid. I purchased this for a kid that I work with and am sure he will enjoy it as much as I did.
Filled with the same childish innocence (and ignorance), detailed illustrations, and getting into trouble that I loved in the older books, this is a great addition to the series.
The story goes through some of the things you would see at a natural history museum including planets and animals, but focuses on the dinosaur exhibit (with real and made-up dinosaurs).
A humorous and entertaining read, sure to please fans of the Little Critter series.
This is another good book to talk about community helpers and the jobs that they do. An activity that I would add to this book would be having the students go on a dinosaur bone hunt. Using a "I Spy" format, the children would put on their fake minors hats and search the room looking for all the pieces to a dinosaur bone puzzle, by listening to clues that I give them to find the pieces. I lesson would not only reflect on the book, it would give the children critical thinking practice, when they are trying to figure out the clues.
Little Critter's class is going to visit the Critterville Museum of Natural history, but are disappointed to realize that the dinosaur exhibit is closed due to a missing Triceratops bone!Join in Little Critter's adventure as he searches the museum for the lost bone.
This book would be a fun and useful book to use in the classroom. I would use it during a lesson on dinosaurs, or before a big field trip to a local museum.
This story involves a fun adventure at a museum. The Little Critter class cannot go to the dinosaur exhibit because of a missing Triceratops bone. The Little Critter then wanders around the museum exploring the different sections of the building. It's a great book to allow introduce new words and theories and build vocabulary.
I like Little Critter books, but this one was just a little too predictable to me...the dinosaur bone just hanging out and he happens to come across it. I need more of an imagination I guess! :) My 2 year old seemed to think it was pretty good.
